第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

My friends and I were coming back from a party when a woman with three children, who looked unclean and untidy, started speaking to us. She said she and her kids needed money to buy some food, as they hadn’t eaten since morning and it was already evening.

I had three hundred dollars with me, and I wanted to buy credit (充值卡) to recharge my phone. I attempted to ignore her and tell her I had no money to spare --- even my friends told me not to give her anything because she was a fake. However, I decided not to listen to them and gave her all the money. I was so shocked when she burst into tears and knelt down. I told her to get up, saying this was just a small amount of money. She said I was the only person that day who believed her and gave her something. She was seriously weeping and I felt very embarrassed. I wished her good luck, smiled at her children and left.

When got home, I took out my phone to check if I had any missed calls. A message came in from one of my church members saying, “I meant to send this credit to you but I kept forgetting. I remembered a few minutes ago, so I decided to send it now.”Happily, I loaded the numbers on my phone to recharge it and I was so amazed when received a message from the network that I just received 1, 000 dollars credit! I had never imagined I could get that as a gift from someone!

Just by giving 300 hundred dollars to someone in need I got back more. One good turn deserves another. It doesn’t have to be immediate like mine, but never be tired of doing good if you have the ability to do good.

What do you think about the very first thing in the morning? Your thoughts during the first half-hour of the morning will greatly influence the entire day. You may not realize this, but it is a fact. If you set out with worry and depression, you are giving the key note to a day of discord (混乱) and misfortune. If you think about hope and happiness, you are sounding a note of harmony and success.

Control your morning thoughts. The first moment on waking, no matter what your mood is, say to yourself, “I will get all the comfort and pleasure possible out of this day, and I will do something to add to the measure of the world’s happiness or well-being.

I will control myself when caused to be unhappy. I will look for the bright side of every event”. Once you say these things over to yourself in a calm way, you will begin to feel more cheerful. The worries and troubles of the coming day will give way.

Do not let it discourage you if the moment you leave your room you come across a trouble or a disaster which usually happens. When a schoolboy boasts (吹嘘) of his strength, and says he can “beat any boy in school in games”, he generally gets a chance to prove it. When we declare we are brave enough to overcome any fate, we find our strength put to the test at once.

Regard the troubles you come across as the “punching bags” of fate (命运), given you to develop your spiritual muscle. Go at them with courage and strike them heavily. By and by the trouble will lessen, and you will find yourself the master of your fate.

5. Why does the author say your thoughts in the morning are very important?

A. Because the morning is usually the best time of a day.

B. Because you are usually in high spirits in the morning.

C. Because your mood of a day lies in your morning.

D. Because your morning thoughts affect your fate greatly.

6. What can we do to add to our pleasure?

A. Avoid making any mistake in our work.

B. Watching comedy programs every day.

C. Avoid reading the book with a sad ending.

D. Look for the better side of every event.

7. According to the author your trouble will lessen if you ________ .

A. work hard every morning

B. say you'll be happy anyway

C. get up early in the morning

D. say you're an unlucky man

8. The underlined words in the last paragraph refer to ________ .

A. a tool used for practicing boxing

B. a test in our daily life

C. a tool used for dealing with difficulty

D. an enemy in our daily life

Cigarette smoking is harmful to health----everyone knows that. Well, till a few decades ago, people were unaware that smoking could cause lung and heart diseases and cigarette packs never had a warning on them, like they do now.

In recent years, research has shown that smoking is dangerous and it has now been made compulsory for all cigarette manufacturers to have a warning printed on the cover. It states that “Cigarette smoking is harmful to health”.

However, cigarette manufacturers do not want people to stop buying their product by reading the warning. So, they have found a convenient way of dealing with the problem. They print the warning in such small letters that one can barely read them.

While European health authorities are now insisting that the size of the letters used in these health warnings should be increased, one British engineering firm, Molins, which supplies machines to make cigarettes, has gone a step ahead. The company wants to patent a talking cigarette packet that gives a health warning every time you open it.

The talking packet uses a technology similar to the one used in musical cards. A stiff plastic strip is attached to the cover of the cigarette packet. When the pack is opened, the strip comes into contact with a tiny battery cell (the kind used in watches), which is wired to a small speaker on the base of the pack. Then smokers will hear the health warning.

Will cigarette manufacturers choose these talking packets?

Anti-smoking organizations are satisfied with the invention and are insisting that all tobacco manufacturers should use these packs. However, without government intervention, cigarette manufactures pay no attention to the request and continue to use tiny-lettered warnings on their packets.

12. Cigarette manufacturers print the warning in small letters to ________ .

A. make it easy to be unnoticed

B. meet the requirement of users

C. cut down their cost

D. catch users' attention

13. Every time a talking cigarette is opened, people can ________ .

A. hear a piece of music

B. see the health warning in

large letters

C. remember the health warning

D. hear the health warning being read

14. The last paragraph suggests that ________ .

A. talking packets can be put into use soon

B. talking packets haven't been put into use

C. cigarette manufacturers are forced to use talking packets now

D. talking packets are also welcomed by cigarette manufacturers

15. What would be the best title of the passage?

A. The harm of smoking

B. Talking cigarette packets

C. The trick of tobacco manufacturers

D. A new anti-smoking organization

作文范文

One possible version

Dear Johnson and David,

I’m glad to learn that you are taking a bike trip down the Mekong River. I, together with a friend have just returned from our bike travel along the river. So I'd like to give you some suggestions.

Firstly, you'd better organize the trip properly by planning your schedule as detailed as possible. It's really necessary for you to know when you are leaving and coming back and the best way of getting to places.

Secondly, you are advised to make a list of the things you badly need on the trip before leaving. For example, you’ll have to take some warm clothes since it’s very cold in the mountains.

Lastly, you can keep a travel journal if possible. There are always new people to meet and interesting things to see. Describe your experience and the beautiful scenery to make a lasting memory.

Hope that you will enjoy the trip and everything will go smoothly. Good luck!

Yours sincerely, Li Hua
