Passage one

There are two factors which determine an individual’s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with . Human brains differ considerably, (2) some being more capable than others. (3)But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence (4)unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what (5)happens to the individual----the sort of environment in which he is brought (6)up. If an individual is handicapped (7) environmentally , it is likely that his brain

will(8)fail to develop and he will (9)never attain the level of intelligence of which he is (10)capabl .

The importance of environment in determining an individual’s intelligence can be (11)demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and John. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in (12) separate foster(寄养) homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in a(n)(13)isolated community with poor educational(14) opportunities.

John, (15) however , was educated in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. This environmental (16) difference continued until the twins were(17) in their late teens,(18) when they were

given tests (19) measure their intelligence. John’s I.O. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the (20) average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother.

Passage Two

The oldest tone buildings in the world are world are the pyramids. hey have stood for nearly 5,000years, and it seems likely

they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of them scattered along the banks of the Nile, some of

which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the “Bent”pyramid.

Some of the pyramids still look much as they must have done when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or, more often, for stone to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to preserve the pyramids. and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin. These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important is that they were planned to last for ever.

It is practically certain that plans were made for the building of the pyramids because the plans of other large work have fortunately been preserved. How ever, there are no writings or pictures to show us how the Egyptians planned or built the pyramids them selves. Consequently, we are only able to guess at the methods used. Nevertheless, by examining the actual pyramids and various tools which have been found, archaeologist have formed a fairly clear picture of them.

One thing is certain: there must have been months of careful planning before they could begin to build. The first thing they had to do was to choose a suitable place. Y ou may think this would have been easy with miles and miles of empty desert around, but a

pyramid could not be built just anywhere. Certain rules had to be followed, and certain problems had to be overcome.

The step pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile; the side on which the sun set. This was for religious reasons. It also had to stand well above the level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. It could not too far from the Nile, however, as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point, Water transport was, of course, much easier than land transport. The builders also had to find a rock base which was not likely to crack under the great weight of the pyramid. Finglly, it had to be near the capital, or better still, near the king’s palace so that he could visit it and personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body.

Passage Four

The Last Supper is regarded as one of the supreme masterpieces in the whole field of pictorial art.Tradition has it that Leonardo da Vinci worked for ten years upon the painting, the monks in the church fretting at the delay.it was said that Leonardo often painted continuously from dawn to night without eating his meals. But at other times he spent hours before the picture, lost in contemplation, examining, comparing, and gauging his figures.

This inactivity roused the indignation of the fussy Prior, the head of the church, who belonged to the large group of those who believe that the busier a man seems, the more he accomplishes; and so he tried to find fault with the idle painter.Leonardo was slightly incensed and explained to somebody else that there is a great difference between the work of the creative artist and the stonemason. The creative artist needs time for contemplation;he may be busiest when his hands are idlest.Just now he needed two heads to complete the picture; that of Christ, for which no model on earth could be found, for where was the man to be found whose face would express the strength, and beauty, and tenderness, and the sorrow of the Christ; then he also needed a head of Judas, and that was hard to find as well, for where was the man whose face could express the meanness of that base traitor. But he would look no further, if none came his way,he would be satisfied to take the Prior as a model for Judas,This

For those who moved to the developing suburbs alter the Second World war they represented an escape from urban congestion to a home of ones own--preferably one with an attached two-car garage---on a little half-acre of tree-shaped land.It also meant dally commutation to work by railroad or expressway,a lawn to mow and a mortgage to pay off over the years.

Aging Is the process of growing old.it occurs eventually in every living thing provided, of course, that an illness or accident does not kill it premature. The most familiar outward signs of aging may be seen in old people, such as the greying of the hair and the wrinkling of the skin.Signs of aging In a pet dog or cat include loss of playfulness and energy, a decline In hearing and eyesight,or even a slight greying of the coat.Plants age too,but the signs are much harder to detect.

Gerontologists---scientists who study the process of aging---believe

Most of us have had mixed experiences in these environments. Yet as one woman told me recently, she knows more about the people she passes on the way to her desk than on her way around the block. Our new sense of community hasn’t just moved from house to office building. The labels that we wear connect us with members from distant companies, cities, and states. We assume that we have something “in common” with other teache rs, nurses, city planners. 12、It’s not unlike the experience of our immigrant grandparents. Many who came to this country still identified themselves as members of the Italian community, the Irish communtiy, the Polish community. They sought out and assumes connection with people from the old country, Many of us have updated that experience. We have replaced ethnic identity with professional identity, the way we replaced neighborhood with the workplace. This whole realignment of community is surely most obvious among the mobile professions. People who move from city to city seem to put roots into their professions. In an age of specialists, they may have to search harder to find people who speak the same language. The Roots Of My Ambition 15、Mother would have liked it better if I could have grown up to be President or a rich businessman, but much as she loved me, she did not deceive herself.

Boys and girls!”,并简单介绍“I’m your new English teacher.You can call me Miss Yan"然后互相用”Hello!" Wow! Cool!

Part A Text 1 Inthe 2006 film version of The Devil Wears Prada, Miranda Priestly, played byMeryl Streep, scold her unattractive assistant for imagining that high fashiondoesn’t affect her. Priestly explains how the deep blue color of the assistant’ssweater descended over the years from fashion shows to department stores and tothe bargain bin in which the poor girl doubtless found her garment 。 Thistop-down conception of the fashion business couldn’t be more out of date or atodds with feverish world described in Overdressed, Elizabeth Cline’s three-yearindictment of “fast fashion”. In the last decades or so, advances in technologyhave allowed mass-market labels such as Zara, H&M, and Uniqlo to react totrends more quickly and anticipate demand more precisely. Quckier turnroundsmean less wasted inventory, more frequent releases, and more profit. Thoselabels encourage style-conscious consumers to see clothes as disposal—— meant to last only a wash or two, although they don’t advertisethat——and to renew their wardrobe every few weeks. Byoffering on-trend items at dirt-cheap prices, Cline argues, these brands havehijacked fashion cycles, shaking all industry long accustomed to a seasonalpace 。 Thevictims of this revolution, of course, are not limited to designers. ForH&M to offer a 5.95 knit miniskirt in all its 2300-plus stores around theworld, it must rely on low-wage, overseas labor, order in volumes that strainnatural resources, and use massive amount of harmful chemicals 。 Overdressedis the fashion world’s answer to consumer activist bestsellers like MichaelPollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma. Mass-produced clothing, like fast food, fillsa hunger and need, yet is non-durable, and wasteful,” Cline argues, Americans, she finds, buy roughly 20 billion garments a year——about 64items per person——and no matter how much they giveaway, this excess leads to waste 。 Towardsthe end of Overdressed, Cline introduced her ideal, a Brooklyn woman named SKB,who, since 2008 has make all of her own clothes——andbeautifully. But as Cline is the first to note, it took Beaumont decades to perfect her craft; herexample, can’t be knocked off 。 Thoughseveral fast-fashion companies have made efforts to curb their impact on laborand the environment——including H&M, withits green Conscious Collection Line——Cline believeslasting-change can only be effected by the customer. She exhibits the idealismcommon to many advocates of sustainability, be it in food or in energy. Vanityis a constant; people will only start shopping more sustainably when they can’tafford to it 。21. Priestly criticizes her assistantfor her [A] poor bargaining skill 。 [B] insensitivity to fashion 。 [C] obsession with high fashion 。 [D]lack of imagination 。22. According to Cline, mass-maket labelsurge consumers to [A] combat unnecessary waste 。 [B] shut out the feverish fashion world 。 [C] resist the influence of advertisements 。 [D] shop for their garments morefrequently 。 23.
