Passage One

In the U.S., when people attain legal marriage age and meet certain medical requirements, they are free to choose their own mates.Once a couple has decided to get married, the man customarily gives the girl a diamond ring. The use of a ring comes from the ancient custom of using a ring to settle an important agreement. When the wedding day is decided upon, the girl sends wedding announcements or invitations to friends and relatives.

O n the wedding day it is supposed to be bad luck for the bride and bridegroom to see each other before the wedding.Another old custom that many people believe will bring good luck to the marriage is for the bride to wear “ something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.”

Before the wedding day the bridegroom always chooses a “best man”, a good friend to help him and stand beside him during the wedding ceremony. The custom of having a “best man” is thought to have come from ancient times when a strong friend helped the bridegroom escape from the bride’s father.

When a couple gets married, the groom gives his bride a wedding ring. Many marriages are double-ring ceremonies—that is, the bride and the groom exchange rings. The wedding ring is customarily a simple plain gold band. The roundness of the ring symbolizes eternity and announces that the couple is united for life. The wedding ring is worn on the third finger of the left hand. People believe that a vein from the third finger runs directly to the heart.

Near the end of the reception, which is offered by the bride’s parents, the bride throws her bunch of flowers to the unmarried women. The lucky girl who catches it is supposed to be the next one to get married.

Passage Two

A Japanese toy maker declares that they have developed a device that translates dog barks into human language and plans to begin selling the device—under the name of Bowlingual—in

the U.S. pet stores and gift shops this summer of 2003.

Tokyo-based Takara Co. Ltd. says about 300,000 of the dog translator gadgets have been sold since it was on sale in Japan late last year. It is forecasting far bigger sales once an English language translation for dogs comes to America in August. The United States is home to about 67 million dogs, six times more than the number in Japan.

“We know that the Americans love their dogs so much, so we don’t think they will mind spending $120 on this product,”the Takara marketing manager said during an interview at a recent pet products conference in Atlanta.

Takara Co. Ltd says it has spent millions of dollars developing the gadget in cooperation with famous sound experts and animal behaviorists.

One thing that does appear certain is that the markets for animal translation products will likely remain a dog’s world since Takara has no plans to develop a similar gadget for cats. “They, are too unpredictable,” the marketing manager said.

25. What do we know about Bowlingual according to the passage?

A) It was invented in America. B) It has developed quickly.

C) It will be sold in America. D) It sells well for its price.

27. What is the attitude of Takara Co. Ltd. towards the sale of its new product?

A) Proud. B) Satisfied. C) Confident. D) Worried.

Passage Three

Billionaires are killed by the same thing s that kill the rest of us; diseases such as cancer, heart attacks, kidney failure and others. The only difference is they may live a little longer.

The average age of death for the 20 billionaires featured in 2004 and 2005 was 78, three and a half years longer than average American males. The results would be even more dramatic if we took into account average life expectancies from around the world, since the billionaires are of all different nationalities.

According to a 1999study in the British Medical Journal, higher income is, in fact, “casually associated with greater longevity.”But when it comes to living longer, billionaires may not be that much better off than mere millionaires.

The rich not only tend to live longer, but are healthier as well. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 23% of poor people are limited by chronic disease, whereas only 10%of “non-poor,” are limited.

What accounts for these gaps? Traditional theories argue that greater wealth means greater access to medical care. But as Forbes’Dan Seligman points out in his June 2004 article, if access was the key, the health gap between the upper and lower classes should have shrunk with the advent of America’s Medicare and Medicaid, not to mention employer-sponsored health insurance.

28. What is the average age of death for American males?

A) 81.5 B) 78 C) 76 D) 74.5

29. Which of the following statement is true?

A) Millionaires live longer, but they tend to have more health problems.

B) Billionaires and millionaires have almost the same longevity.

C) Poor people have more health problems than millionaires.

D) Billionaires have more health problems than poor people.

30. According to Forbes’Dan Seligman, which is important in decreasing the health gap?

A) To decrease the wealth gap.

B) To launch on America’s Medicare and Medicaid.

C) To decrease employer-sponsored health insurance.

D) To support the poor financially.

4级听力原文

Section B 26: While Gail Obcamp, an American artist was giving a speech on the art of Japanese brush painting to an audience that included visitors from Japan, she was confused to see that many of her Japanese listeners have their eyes closed. Were they tuned off because an American had the nerve to instruct Japanese in their own art form or they deliberately tried to signal their rejection of her Obcamp later found out that her listeners were not being disrespectful. Japanese listeners sometimes closed their eyes to enhance concentration. Her listeners were showing their respect for her by chewing on her words. Some day you may be either a speaker or a listener in a situation involving people from other countries or members of minority group in North America. Learning how different cultures signal respect can help you avoid misunderstandings. Here are some examples. In the deaf culture of North America, many listeners show applause not by clapping their hands but by waving them in the air. In some cultures, both overseas and in some minority groups in North America, listeners are considered disrespectful if they look directly at the speaker. Respect is shown by looking in the general direction but avoiding direct eye contact. In some countries, whistling by listeners is a sign of approval while in other countries it is a form of insult. 29: Chris is in charge of purchasing and maintaining equipment in his Division at Taxlong Company.

M: Really? Q: What does the woman mean? 选项:A) She purchased a car recently. B) She knew the car was in the lot.

例(2010年12月小对话): [A] Combine her training with dieting. [B] Repeat the training every three days. [C] Avoid excessive physical training. [D] Include weightlifting in the program. 很明显,考动作的动作题目,注意听懂第二句的动作即可。 例(长对话) A) marketing consultancy. B) Professional accountancy. C) luxury hotel management.
