Eco-friendly Car Racer

Can you image a car racer is so eco-friendly that its tyres are made from potatoes, its body is created from hemp (大麻) and rapeseed oil and it runs on fuel made from wheat and sugar beet? The one-seater racing car called Eco One is built by experts from Warwick University, who hope that Eco One will be adopted by the automotive industry. It is sold at £41,000.

Pollution-sensitive Dress

Don't be caught outside unaware of pollution levels in the air. The pollution-sensitive EPA Dress by Stephanie Sandstrom notices pollution in the air accordingly. This dress —which is actually quite pretty — looks like you pull it from the bottom of the dirty laundry pile when the air is dirty. It might protect your health by advising you to stay indoors for the day, but it won't do you any favor if you're meeting with clients.

Eco-friendly Umbrella

Traditional umbrellas come with a fixed surface. Although it's changeable, you cannot replace it easily. This eco-friendly design is more flexible. It's actually only an umbrella skeleton without any surface, which can be folded, so you can put anything such as newspapers, plastic bags or whatever you want to serve as the protecting surface.

Eco-friendly Moss (苔藓) Carpet

It's said that walking on fresh grass increases your blood circulation. The Moss Carpet, created by Nguyen La Chanh, looks at getting the grass to your feet. The mat includes ball moss, island moss and forest moss. The humidity (湿度) of the bathroom makes sure that it grows well. And that's why you need to place it there and not anywhere else.

In many parts of the world, people still celebrate festivals at harvest time. In West Africa, people celebrate the New Yam Festival, called Iri-ji. Yams, a kind of sweet potato, are an important food in countries such as Nigeria. In Nigeria the Ibo people have a yam harvest festival each August. The night before the festival, they dispose of the last year's yams. A village elder or chief eats the first new yam. Then he offers the harvest to the gods and to the ancestors of the people. Finally, he divides the yams among the people. On the festival day, people take part in traditional dances all day and all night.

The people of South India celebrate a festival called Pongal, which lasts four days. In this region, heavy rainstorms called monsoons come in October and November. These rains water the crops. Farmers harvest the crops in January. On the first day of Pongal, people give thanks for the rains to Indra, ruler of the clouds. On the second day, they say prayers to Surya, the sun god. On the third day, the festival of cattle, or cows, takes place. People thank the cows for the work they do to pull plows and give milk. The final day of Pongal is devoted to outdoor activities and excursions. The people also set out rice balls for birds to eat. They believe that this brings good luck and happiness.

Other places also have elaborate harvest rituals. For example, in Brazil people celebrate Saint John's Day. It is a midwinter festival, but it takes place on June 24 and 25. During

Saint John's Day, people light bonfires to wake up Saint John in heaven so that he can hear their prayers. The festival also involves special foods. People cook desserts made from corn. One such dish, pamonha, is sweet corn that is mashed and wrapped in cooked corn husks, or leaves. Another dish, canjica, is a corn pudding.

As long as they farm the land, people in these and other places will probably continue to celebrate the harvest.

Book 3 Unit 1 Festivals around the world B3U1P1-3 FESTIV ALS AND CELEBRATIONS Ancient Festivals Festivals and celebrations of all kinds are held everywhere. The most ancient festivals would celebrate the end of the cold weather, planting in spring and harvest in autumn. Other celebrations were held when hunters could catch animals. They would starve if food was difficult to find, so they celebrated when they had food. They lit fires and made music because they thought these festivals would bring a year of plenty. Festivals of the Dead Some festivals are held to honour the dead, or satisfy and please the ancestors, who could return either to help or to do harm. In Japan the festival is called Obon, when people should go to clean the graves and light incense in memory of their ancestors. They light lamps and play music because they think that this will lead the ancestors back to earth. In Mexico they have the Day of the Dead in early November. On this important feast day, people might eat food in shape of skulls, and cakes with “bones” on them. They offer food, flowers and gifts to the dead. The festival of Halloween had its origin as an event in memory of the dead. It is now a children’s festival, when they can go to their neighbours’ homes and ask for sweets. They dress up and try to frighten people. If they are not given anything, the children might play a trick. Festivals to Honour People Festivals can be held as an honour to famous people or to the gods. One of these is the Dragon Boat Festival in China, which honours the famous ancient poet, Qu Yuan. Another is Columbus Day in the USA, in memory of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America. In India there is a national festival on October 2 to honour Mahatma Gandhi, the leader who helped gain India’s independence from Britain. Harvest Festivals Harvest and Thanksgiving festivals can be very happy events. People are grateful because their food is gathered for the winter ,and because a season of agricultural work is over. In European countries it is the custom to decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and people get together to have meals. Some people might win awards for their animals, flowers, fruits and vegetables, like the biggest watermelon or the most handsome rooster. In China and Japan there are mid-autumn festivals, when people admire the moon and give gift of mooncakes. Spring Festivals The most energetic and important festivals are the ones that look forward to the end of winter and to the coming of spring. At the Spring Festival in China, people eat dumplings, fish and meat, and may give children lucky money in the red paper. There are dragon dances and carnivals, and families celebrate the lunar New Year together. In some Western countries there are very exciting carnivals, which take place forty days before Easter, usually in February. They might include parades, dancing in the streets day and night, loud music and colourful clothing of all kinds. Easter is an important religious and social festival in Christian countries. It celebrates the return of Jesus for Christians and it also celebrates the coming of spring. In Japan, the Cherry Blossom Festival happens a little later. The country is covered with cherry tree flowers so that it looks as though it might be covered with pink snow. People love to get together to eat, drink and have fun with each others. Festivals let us enjoy life, be proud of our customs and forget our daily life for a little while.

He’s tired, and so am I.(=I’ m also tired.) You can swim, and so can I.(=I can also swim.) She has had supper, and so can I.(=I’ve had lunch, too.) Tom speaks English, and so does his sister.(=His sister speaks English, too.) A: I went to the park yesterday. B: So did I.(=I also went to the park yesterday.) 2.“So +主语+be/have/助动词/情态动词”结构中的主谓是正常语序,so相当于indeed,certainly,表示说话人对前面或对方所说情况的肯定、赞同或证实,语气较强,意思是“确实如此”。 例如 A:It was cold yesterday. B:So it was. (=Yes,it was.) A:You seem to like sports.B:So I do.(=Yes,I do.) A:It will be fine tomorrow.B:So it will.(=Yes ,it will.) 3.“主语+do/does/did + so”结构指的是按上句的要求做了。 My Chinese teacher told me to hand in my composition on time and I did so.(=I han ded in my composition on time.) 4.So it is with…或 It is the same with… She doesn’t play the piano, but she likes singing. So it is with my sister. 5、There you are.
