When John and Victoria Falls arrived in New York City forone-year stay, they did not bring very many things with them. They had plannedeither to live in a furnished apartment or to buy used furniture. But they soonlearned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting ofhome furnishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one ofAmerica’sfastest growing businesses.

What kinds of people rent their home furnishingsinstead of buying them? People who are international business or governmentofficials, foreign students, airline workers, young married couple –people whosejob or business may force them to move frequently from one city to another. They save a lot of trouble and the cost of moving their furniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their new homes. Young peoplewith little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soondislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture thatthey really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better quality furniturethan they could afford to buy.

One family, who now have a large, beautiful home oftheir own, liked their rented furniture so much that they decided to keeprenting it instead of buying new things. But usually people don’t like to tellothers about it. The idea of renting home furnishings is still quite new, andthey are not sure what their neighbors might think. (248words)

A characteristic of American culturethat has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man—the man who hasrisen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with hishands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupiesa higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than thecommon laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to pointout that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of somesort.

This attitude toward manual(体力的)labor is now stillseen many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that isnot only comfortably but even luxuriously(豪华地)furnished and in which thereis every evidence of the fact the family has been able to afford foreigntravel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet thehostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and willwash dishes afterward, furthermore the dinner will not consist merely ofsomething quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cakeor a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usuallytakes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional may talkabout washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wifemay even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for hisliving, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highwayin order to pay for his education.

Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage: Is that 6 a.m. workout getting in the way of good sleep? Don ' t think your fat cells won't notice. A new study published in The Annals of Internal Medicine (a medical journal) finds that inadequate shut-eye has a harmful effect on fat calls, reducing their ability to respond to insulin ( 胰岛素) by about 30 percent. Over the long-term ,this decreased response could set-the stage for type-2 diabetes (a medical condition in which someone has too much sugar in his or her blood), f atty liver disease and weight gain . The study adds to a growing body of evidence that there 's“ an intimate relationship between the amount of sleep we get and our ability to maintain a good ,healthy body weight ” says sleep expert Helene Emsellem ,director of the Center for Sleep and Wake Disorders in Chevy Chase ,Maryland. (76) But Americans don ' t seem to be getting the message that we need seven to nine hours per night. More than 1 in 5 of us ,according to a report form the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ,is getting six or fewer hours of sleep per night ,on average. So how did researchers study fat cells in the Annals paper? Matthew Brady of the University of Chicago and a group of colleagues selected and persuaded seven volunteers to take part in the research project. They were all young ,thin and healthy and agreed to sleep for eight nights in a sleep lab. “ For four nights they were allowed to stay in bed for 8.5 hours a night ,” says Brady. Then ,a month later ,they came back for four additional nights —but this time they were allowed just 4.5 hours of sleep per night. And after each visit ,researchers got a sample of their fat.(77) Brady explains that the fat cells responded significantly to the loss of sleep. “ I was very surprised to be honest ,” he says.

2013湖南学位英语仿真模拟试题 试题(一) Part I Reading Comprehension (30%) Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Passage 1 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debt and y ou don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this rally a lie? Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. (76)According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly w hen telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intension of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way. Research has also be en done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. T o the trained observer th ey are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.” They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressures make it itch. Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Manwatching calls “the mouth cover”.(77)He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture
