Frankly, becoming a very good, effective communicator is a lifetime effort for most people. I mean, there are entire books and courses that try to teach you how to do this well. But for today, I’m just going emphasize two things to help you communicate much more effectively.

02

The first is, understand your audience and situation . Most people relate communication to talking. But when coaching others, I tell them that half of communicating effectively happens before you even open your mouth to say something. It’s in your preparation and understanding of your audience and situation.

For instance, for your audience, how familiar are they with what you want to tell them? What’s their motivation or main objective? Who influences their outlook or decision? The better you understand the other person’s point of view, the better you can deliver the right message to them in the right way.

For understanding the situation, what’s the main objective or focus of your communication? Is it to convince the other person of something, or just share some key points? Is it to get or give information? Often, it’s both, but which first? What are their expectations or level of interest in what you have to say? Are they likely to be more closed or open to it? The better you understand the situation, the more effective your communication will be too.

The second thing is, keep things simple, concise, and focused. Listen, no matter who you’re dealing with, what the situation is,

or what you want to say, whether it’s in meetings, one-on-one,

or emails, simple, concise, and focused works every time.

In business, complex isn’t what others want to hear. Simple and straightforward is. Whenever I hear someone say, “It’s complex,” I instantly lose interest.

In addition, brief or concise, is always preferred. So similarly, whenever I hear someone say, “It’s a long story.” I think, “How about just giving me the short version.”

And especially when talking to smart, busy executives or clients,

you just want to hit the point and be clear and focused about what

you want to tell them. That’s what they like.

03

Hey, many things impact your communication. But by putting some thought upfront into understanding your audience and situation, and then saying things in a simple, concise and focused way, you’ll instantly improve your ability to communicate more effectively.

And

that’s my Career Sense

101, Key Skills & Capabilities lesson for today. As always, best of luck pursuing your career success, whatever that may be to you. Thanks for listening! I’ll see you tomorrow!
