When You are Old by W.B YEATS

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,

And nodding by the fire, take down this book,

And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

慢慢诵读,梦忆从前你双眸,神色柔和,眼波中倒影深深;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,

And loved your beauty with love false or true,

But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,

And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

爱你渐衰的脸上愁苦的风霜;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,

Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled

And paced upon the mountains overhead

And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

Elegy 9 by Ovid, translated by Christopher Marlowe

Yet should I curse a god, if he but said,

Live without love, so sweet ill is a maid.

For when my loathing it of heat deprives me,

I know not whether my mind's whirlwind drives me.

Even as a headstrong courser bears away,

His rider vainly striving him to stay,

Or as a sudden gale thrusts into sea,

The haven touching bark now near the lea,

So wavering Cupid brings me back amain,

And purple Love resumes his darts again.

Strike boy, I offer thee my naked breast,

Here thou hast strength, here thy right hand doth rest.

Here of themselves thy shafts come, as if shot,

Better then I their quiver knows them not.

Hapless is he that all the night lies quiet and slumb'ring, thinks himself much blessed by it.

Fool, what is sleep but image of cold death,

Long shalt thou rest when Fates expire thy breath.

But me let crafty damsels words deceive,

Great joys by hope I inly shall conceive.

Now let her flatter me, now chide me hard,

Let me enjoy her oft, oft be debarr'd.

Cupid by thee, Mars in great doubt doth trample,

And thy step-father fights by thy example.

Light art thou, and more windy then thy wings,

Joys with uncertain faith thou tak'st and brings.

Yet Love, if thou with thy fair mother hear ,

Within my breast no desert empire bear.

Subdue the wandring wenches to thy reign,

So of both people shalt thou homage gain.

Tess was a precocious eight-year-old girl when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew.

All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money.

They were moving to an apartment complex next month because Daddy didn't have the money for the doctor's bills and our house.

Only a very costly surgery could save him now and it was looking like there was no-one to loan them the money.

“现在唯一可以救他的办法就是做手术,但手术费用非常昂贵,没有人肯借钱给我们。”

She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with whispered desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”

How beautiful it was, falling so silently all day long, all ni ght long, on the mountains, on the meadows, on the roofs on the livi ng, on the graves of the dead! All white save the river, that marked its course be a winding black line across the Ian dscape; and the leafless tress, that aga inst the leade n sky now revealed more fully the wonderful beauty and intricacies of their branches. What silenee, too, came with the snow, and what seclusion! Every sound was muffled, every no ise cha nged to someth ing soft and musical. No more tramp ing hoofs, no more rattling wheels!

As a teenager,I felt I was always letting people down. I was rebellious out-side,but I wanted to be liked inside. Once I left home to hitch-hike2 to California with my friend Penelope. The trip wasn?t easy,and there were many times I didn?t feel safe. One situation in particular kept me grateful to still be alive. When I returned home,I was different,not so outwardly sure of myself. I was happy to be home. But then I noticed that Penelope,who was staying with us,was wearing my clothes. And my family seemed to like her better than me. I wondered if I would be missed if I weren?t there. I told my mom,and she explained that though Penelope was a lovely girl,no one could replace me. I pointed out,“She is more patient and is neater than I have ever been.”My mom said these were wonderful qualities,but I was the only person who could fill my role. She made me realize that even with my faults—and there were many-I was a loved member of the family who couldn?t be replaced. I became a searcher,wanting to find out who I was and what made me unique. My view of myself was changing. I wanted a solid base to start from. I started to resist3 pressure to act in ways that I didn?t like any more,and I was delighted by who I really was. I came to feel much more sure that no one can ever take my place. Each of us holds a unique place in the world. You are special,no matter what others say or what you may think. So forget about being replaced. You can’t be. If you put a buzzard1) in a pen2) six to eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt3) to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top. The ordinary bat that flies around at night, who is a remarkable nimble4) creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is to shuffle5) about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation6) from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash. A bumblebee7) if dropped into an open tumbler8) will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists9) in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself. In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations10), not realizing that the answer is right there above them.

The Force of Habits Habits, whether good or bad, are gradually formed. The more we do a thing, the more we tend to like doing it; and if we do not continue to do it, we feel uncomfortable. This is called the force of habits, and the force of habits should be fought against. This applies even to such good things as work or rest. Some people form a bad habit of working too much, and others of idling too much. Bad habits, once formed, are difficult to get rid of. The wise man always remembers to check any bad habit. He warns himself “I am now becoming idle” or “I like too many sweets” or “I smoke too much”. And then adds, “I will get myself out of this bad habit at once.” The Way to Achieve Success Many people say that they owe much of it to the cultivation of certain good habits in early life. In forming good habits, I think we should pay attention to four things, that is honesty, industry, enthusiasm and thrift. “Honesty is the best policy.” This is a proverb to which we must pay attention. There are so many temptations in society that through a little carelessness we may go astray. But when we are honest, people will not be dishonest to us. Industry gives every man and woman, every boy and girl, proper work to do. To do nothing is going to ruin oneself. Enth usiasm is a great force. One’s soul will expand if one devotes oneself to a noble cause. The difficulties in our way are tremendous, but what can we not accomplish, if with enthusiasm }

Passage One What Life is About What is life about? We push very hard everyday to make more money, to gain power and recognition. We neglect our health, time with our family and to appreciate the surrounding beauty and the hobbies we love to do. One day when we look back, we will realize that we don't really need that much, but then we cannot turn back time for what we have missed. Life is not about making money, acquiring power or recognition. Life is definitely not about work! Work is only necessary to keep us living so as to enjoy the beauty and pleasures of life. Life is a balance of work and play, family and personal time. You have to decide how you want to balance your life. Define your priorities, realize what you are able to compromise (妥协)but always let some of your decisions be based on your instincts (本能). Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim of human existence. So, take it easy, do what you want to do and appreciate nature. Life is fragile(脆弱的). Life is short. Do not take life for granted. Live a balanced lifestyle and enjoy life! Chasing after your dreams Dreams! How nice do they sound? I am not talking about the dreams we have when we are asleep but about the lifelong aspirations (愿望,抱负) in each one of us. I am sure many or rather should I say all of us have goals in our lives. Even if your goal is something small, you should be proud that you do have a goal. Some never tend to think about goals in life. Although this may come as a surprise it is true. These people take life as it comes without planning and go with the flow of events in their life. In fact, having a goal in life would make anyone more focused and determined in reaching that target. I have heard some grumble (怨言)that their dreams are just dreams and can never become true. Well, it all depends on what kind of goals you're aiming at. If you're very determined to make something and take pains, you can be pretty sure that you're already half-way there to make your dream into a reality. So never say that your dream will forever be a dream. Go ahead, plan on making that dream a reality and watch how easily you can attain that target(目标).

Different countries have different kinds of englishes Voyage s of people from england play an important part in spreading the english language. At present, english is frequently spoken as an official or common language in many countries, such as america, singapore, malaysia and some african countries. All base d on british english, the english spoken in these countries can be well understood by native english speakers. But actually, these englishes have been gradually changing in accent s, spelling s, expression s and the usage of vocabulary. Because of this fact, you can make use of the differences to tell which country the foreigners of your block are from. For example, if a boss fluently commands his driver, ―come up straight to my apartment by elevator and tak e some gas for my trucks and cab s‖, instead of request ing, ―please come to my flat by lift and take some petrol for my lorries and taxis‖, you can recognize his american identity, while the latter suggest s that he is british. 例如,如果有个老板流利地命令他的司机:―come up straight to my apartment by elevator and t ake some gas for my trucks and cabs(直接搭电梯到我公寓上来拿卡车和出租车的汽油)‖,而不是要求说,―please come to my flat

01 The Language of Music A painter hangs his or her finished pictures on a wall, and everyone can see it. A composer writes a work, but no one can hear it until it is performed. Professional singers and players have great responsibilities, for the composer is utterly dependent on them. A student of music needs as long and as arduous a training to become a performer as a medical student needs to become a doctor. Most training is concerned with technique, for musicians have to have the muscular proficiency of an athlete or a ballet dancer. Singers practice breathing every day, as their vocal chords would be inadequate without controlled muscular support. String players practice moving the fingers of the left hand up and down, while drawing the bow to and fro with the right arm—two entirely different movements. Singers and instruments have to be able to get every note perfectly in tune. Pianists are spared this particular anxiety, for the notes are already there, waiting for them, and it is the piano tuner’s responsibility to tune the instrument for them. But they have their own difficulties; the hammers that hit the string have to be coaxed not to sound like percussion, and each overlapping tone has to sound clear. This problem of getting clear texture is one that confronts student conductors: they have to learn to know every note of the music and how it should sound, and they have to aim at controlling these sound with fanatical but selfless authority. Technique is of no use unless it is combined with musical knowledge and understanding. Great artists are those who are so thoroughly at home in the language of music that they can enjoy performing works written in any century. 02 Schooling and Education It is commonly believed in United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark is important. Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place anywhere, whether in the shower or in the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist. Whereas schooling has a certain predictability, education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known of other religions. People are engaged in education from infancy on. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong process, a process that st arts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral part of one’s entire life. Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern

Youth Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. W hether 60 or 16, there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Risks To laugh is to risk appearing the fool. To weep is to risk appearing sentimental. To reach out for another is to risk involvement. To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self. To place your ideas and your dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss. To love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying. To hope is to risk despair. To try is to risk failure. But risks must be taken, because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
