Visitor Code

·Arrive with nothing that can harm New Zealand

If you are arriving from overseas, bring no food, animal or plant material into the country. If in doubt declare it to Customs.

·Protect plants and animals

Never allow dogs or other pets to run freely in areas of nesting birds, other wildlife, or where signposted.

·Get rid of rubbish

Always get rid of your rubbish properly and recycle waste (e.g., glass, paper) where possible.

·Be considerate with other waste

If using a portable toilet always throw away your toilet waste at a proper waste station. In the back country, bury your toilet waste in a shallow hole away from waterways.

·Keep New Zealand’s water clean

Because soaps and other wastes can harm waterways, be careful your washing water doesn’t pollute the sea, lakes and rivers.

·Take care with fire

Always observe district fire bans. Be careful if you smoke or have an outdoor fire or barbecue—make sure ashes are cold before leaving.

·Camp or picnic carefully

When camping or picnicking, use facilities provided.

·Keep to the track

Keep to the track, where one exists, so you lessen the chance of damaging fragile plants.

·Be considerate

When driving, minimize noise and observe no smoking signs.

(2016·泰州二中测试) Members of BiBoBox Studio didn’t expect a call from the Apple team.

But that’s what happened after they created a series of squeaky(吱吱叫的)animals including a penguin and a giraffe for the iPad. “We tried to make the characters as lifelike, interactive and user-friendly as possible,”said Liu Bo, a teacher from Dalian Nationalities University, and the chief director of Bibobox. “Our team pays close attention to the tiniest details.”

The group’s innovation and efforts captured the attention of Apple engineers.

BiBoBox’s 30-page interactive storybook Little Star won the Student Developer Award at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference(WWDC), held June 11—15 in San Francisco, US.

The team behind Little Star is mad e up of five students and two teachers from Liu’s university. They

are all design or computer engineering majors.

It’s the first time that a Chinese team has won a prize at the annual Apple Design Awards, since the awards began in 1996. According to Apple, the award is given to developers who match its own philosophy of good design, innovation and state-of-the-art hardware.

“Our design philosophy is very simple. We want children to think outside the box to reach an answer,”Liu explained. “The point of our book is to provide children with methods and ideas for them to think creatively by themselves.”

Little Star features a story of five friends on their journey to catch stars. After several failed attempts, they discover their shortcomings and weaknesses, and realize that the power of teamwork is the key to success.

“In our process of creating the app, teamwork also proved to be crucial,”said Wang Kun,22, a senior animation major who did the coloring.

“It’s important for designers and engineers to work together and get their ideas across.”Wang said the team had a brainstorming session every week. At first, it was hard to communicate because they had different ideas.

“We then spent time together,”Wang recalled. “As a result, engineers knew how to put our ideas into reality, and we designers understood how to respond to their needs. ”

The children are able to interact with the app in many ways, including touching to reveal different characters as well as using an accelerometer to shake the stars out of the sky.

Besides the exquisite and flawless design, the language was important.

Instead of Mandarin, Little Star was first launched in English. Then they added simplified Chinese and Cantonese versions.

“We were thinking with a global mindset,”said Maggie Li, a tutor who was in charge of translating the script. “From the outset our book was aimed at children around the world, not just those in China. Kids think the same universally. ”

Bi Wenting,23, a classmate of Wang, said they spent almost a year creating the storybook. They did research at primary schools in Dalian to find out if children liked their plotlines and characters.

Fluent English also helped the team promote itself at the conference. The representatives at the event exchanged ideas with fellow developers.

“Apple looked interested in our project, ”said Li. “We told them about our future plans, as well as Chinese app-developing and education-related markets. ”

【解题导语】BiBoBox工作室的成员做梦都没有想到会接到苹果团队打来的电话。但当他们为iPad创造出包括企鹅、长颈鹿等在内的一系列能吱吱叫的动物形象后,这一切都成真了。

An incredible dog has mastered more than just the doggy paddle(狗刨式游泳)—the golden brown pet helps disabled children learn how to surf. Ricochet’s owner Judy Fridono said, “I was working with her at balance and coordination(协作). Her balance is so good that she can help to stabilize the board for the kids. And it makes them feel good to know that Ricochet is there with them, keeping them company.”

After becoming an expert, two-year-old Ricochet helps the disabled children build up the confidence to get on the board themselves. Dressed in a yellow jacket, Ricochet helps to counter-balance the board and acts as a reassuring presence.

Ms. Fridono knows what an impact her beloved dog can have. She herself was severely disabled since her teens. Having Ricochet around lifts her spirits, and inspires her to conquer her pain to get on the board. “Ricochet has taught me to focus on what I can do, rather than what I can’t,”she said.

One of those who have benefited from Ricochet’s skills is six-year-old Ian McFarland. In 2008 a car crash left him with brain damage. Although he had loved surfing before the accident, he was too nervous to go back into the water. His fear turned to excitement, when he was told he could try a tandem(双人) surf session with Ricochet. Their session was a success and by the end of it, Ian was smiling from ear to ear. As well as helping with treatments, Ricochet also raised £5,000 to help continue Ian’s recovery.

Over the last 10 months, Ricochet’s excellent performances on the sea have raised more than £30,000 for a number of charity causes.

(2016·泰州市模拟)The most complex object known to humanity is the human brain—and not only is it complex, but it is one of the few natural phenomena that science has no consciousness of.To try to replicate (复制) something that is so poorly understood may therefore seem like pride. But you have to start somewhere, and International Business Machines (IBM) and the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne(EPFL),in Switzerland, propose to start by replicating “in silico”,one of the brain’s building blocks.

In a partnership announced, the two organizations said they would be working together to build a simulation (模拟) of a structure known as a neo-cortical(新大脑皮质的)column on a type of IBM supercomputer that is currently used to study the molecular functioning of genes. If that works, they plan to use more powerful computers to link such simulated columns together into something that mimics(模仿) a brain.

In a real brain,a neo-cortical column is a cylindrical(圆柱形的)element about a third of a millimeter in diameter and three millimeters long.It is these columns, arranged side by side like the cells of a honeycomb, which make up the famous “grey matter”that has become shorthand for human intelligence. The Blue Gene/L supercomputer that will be used for the simulation consists of enough independent processors for each to be programmed to mimic an individual nerve cell in a colum n.

The EPFL’s contribution to the Blue Brain Project will be to create a digital description of how the columns behave. The database from its Brain Mind Institute will provide the raw material for the simulation.Biologists and computer scientists will then connect the artificial nerve cells up in a way that mimics nature. They will do so by assigning electrical properties(电能)to them, and telling them how to communicate with each other and how they should modify their connections with one another depending on their activity.

That_will_be_no_mean_feat.Even a single nerve cell is complicated, not least because each one has about 10,000 connections with others. And nerve cells come in great variety—relying, for example,on different chemical transmitters to carry messages across those connections.Eventually, however,a digital representation of an entire column should occur.

Assuming that the growth of computing power continue s to follow Moore’s Law,the leader of IBM’s side thinks it should be practical to mimic an entire human brain in silico this way in ten to fifteen years.Such an artificial brain would,of course,be a powerful research tool.It would allow neurological experiments that currently tak e days in a “web lab” to be conducted in seconds. The researchers hope that their simulated brain will reveal the secrets of how certain psychiatric and neurological, disorders develop. But that is probably not the real reason for doing it.The most interesting question, surely,is whether such an artificial brain will be intelligent,or conscious,or both.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A To American visitors, Iceland is a very interesting country, partly because it is different in so many ways from what he or she is used to seeing at home. There are quite a few things that are not done, or that do not exist on the island —quite a few "No's". There is no pollution, for instance. No dogs are permitted in Reykjavik, the capital. There is no television on Thursdays or during the entire month of July, and only three hours of black-and-white TV the rest of the time. There is no hard liquor on Wednesdays and no beer at any time. There are no handguns; only one jail of thirty-five cells in the entire land —an admirable figure, even for a small country of 313,376 people. There is no army, air force or navy. There is no tipping for anything. There are no large stores open on Saturdays or Sundays. Since Iceland is situated just under the Arctic Circle, there is no darkness in summer and no daylight in winter. But thanks to Gulf Stream, the climate is rather mild, with temperatures ranging from 34 degrees Fahrenheit to 52 degrees in July. The rules on television, liquor, and guns are the result of governmental decision. But the absence of pollution is due in great part to the fact that Iceland gets its power from the enormous geyser(间歇泉and the thousands of hot springs that come out of the ground. They provide all the energy needed by the country. In fact, Iceland uses only 3 percent of all its available power. Iceland has been described as a democratic independent country where more fish are caught and more books published per person than anywhere else in the world. The Icelanders have always felt a particular love for literature. They composed their first works in the ninth and tenth centuries AD. These works were poems and tales about the kings, heroes, and heroines of Iceland and Norway. At first the stories were memorized

2017高考英语阅读练习题3

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。 A Men have always believed that they are smarter than women. Now, a study has found that while this is certainly true, men also have to deal with the fact that they are also more stupid than the fairer sex. In the study, scientists measured the IQ of 2500 brothers and sisters and they found an uneven number of men not only in the top two percent, but also in the bottom two percent. The study's participants were tested on science, maths, English and mechanical abilities. Though there were twice as many men as women in the smartest group, there were also twice as many men among the dolts. The aggregate scores of men and women were similar. One of the study's authors, psychology professor Timothy Bates, said that the phenomenon may be because men have always been expected to be high achievers and women have been restricted to spend more time taking care of their home. "The female developmental program may be tilted more towards ensuring survival and the safety of the middle ground.," the Daily Mail quoted Professor Bates, of Edinburgh University, as saying. The research tallies with past results that men were more likely than women to receive first class University degrees or thirds and women secured the seconds. It has been said that men are more ready to take risk when it comes to academics. Women have always found to be steadier in their learning. A past study has shown that women are securing more firsts and seconds, while men are continuing to receive more thirds. The argument for the change is that the increase of coursework at the cost of exams favors women's steady approach. 1. The purpose of the passage is to tell us that ________. A. man are smarter then women B. man are more stupid the women C. a new fact about the IQ of men and women has been found D. men are more likely to receive first class university degrees 2. According to Timothy Bates, less women are in the smartest group because _________. A. they are born stupid B. they have to spend more time to tale care of their home than men C. they don’t like to take risk D. they are not expected to be high achievers 3. The underlined word tallies with in the eighth paragraph means________. A. agree with B. deal with C. go against D. go with 4. It can be inferred from the passage that______. A. Women are steadier in their learning. B. men are more ready to take risk in everything C. women are securing more firsts and seconds D. women are doing much better in academy 5. Which of the following questions has NOT been discussed in the passage? A. Why are men smarter than women?

训练4 议论文 A (2016·威海二模) It's Nice to be Home 1 I have been fortunate enough to make trips to many countries. They were wonderful adventures filled with new sights and experiences. And my wife and I have another trip in the planning stages. We're home now and have settled back into our daily routine of life. 2 I find that when I am at home, particularly for a while when we have just returned from a trip,I feel very comfortable.Perhaps it is because everything around me is familiar and the daily routine is so much the same I can move through it almost without thinking. 3 Perhaps it is because we can have meals at home instead of always being in restaurants, although it's nice to let someone else do the cooking, and because I can sleep in my own bed. There are times I think it would be nice to simply stop travelling and stay home and I'm sure I would be very comfortable if that were to happen. 4 Yet I guess I am probably a restless soul because I know that after I have been home for a while I will start to think about other places we might go and other things we want to see.We will travel again and we feel fortunate to be able to do so. 5 Still, one of the best things about travelling for me is coming home.I'm very comfortable here at home even if it is difficult to say exactly why. A.I like to travel very much. B.I enjoy local food while travelling. C.I like being home, for whatever reason. D.Perhaps it is because our friends are here. E.And I enjoy my daily life at home so much. F.We want to see as much of the world as we can. G.It's lucky that my wife and I both love travelling. 本文是一篇议论文。作者很喜欢旅游,但每次旅游回到家都感到很舒服,或许因为周围 的一切很熟悉,或许因为可以在家吃饭,或许因为可以睡在自己的床上。 1.A[根据本段内容并结合“I have been fortunate enough to make trips to many countries.”和“And my wife and I have another trip in the planning stages.”可 知作者很喜欢旅游。] 2.E[根据第二段首句“We're home now and have settled back into our daily
