Teofilo Stevenson was born in 1952 and grew up in a small town in Cuba.He started boxing as a teenager and, when he was 13, went to Havana to train at the national sports complex."I lost 14 of my first 20 fights," said Stevenson."I hated getting hit. What happened was that I decided I hated losing even more."

When he was just 20, Teofilo went to the Olympic Games in Germany and won a gold medal. He was tall and powerful with a long "reach".His long arms could hit opponents (对手)before they could hit him.At the Games in Canada in 1976 he won the gold again. In the ring, boxers were afraid of Teofilo, they tried to stay away from him and not get too close to his powerful punches (拳).He won another gold medal in Moscow in 1980.Only two of the fights he had at the Olympic Games lasted for the full three rounds. That means he either knocked his opponents to the floor and they were counted out or the referee stopped the fight because it was dangerous for the other boxer.

When I met him, I had a lot of anger inside of me. I’ve lived my whole life in Spanish Harlem, but in my neighborhood, there are shoot-ups all the time. I know kids who have been shot or beaten up. I have friends who ended up in prison. I could

have ended up that way, too, but Mr. Clark wouldn’t let that happen.

Mr. Clark worked long hours, making sure I did my work. My grades rose. In fact, the scores of our whole class rose. One day, he took our class to see The Phantom of the Opera, and it was the first time some kids had ever been out of Harlem. Before the show, he treated us to dinner at a restaurant and taught us not to talk with our mouths full. We did not want to let him down.

Mr. Clark was selected as Disney’s 2000 Teacher of the Year. He said he would draw three names out of a hat; those students would go with him to Los Angeles to get the award. But when the time came to draw names, Mr. Clark said, “You’re all going.”

On graduation day, there were a lot of tears. We didn’t want his class to end. In 2001, he moved to Atlanta, but he always kept in touch. He started giving lectures about education, and wrote a bestselling book based on his classroom rules, The Essential 55. In 2003,

Mr. Clark took some of us on a trip to South Africa to deliver school supplies and visit the orphanages (孤儿院). It was the most amazing experience of my life. It’s now my dream to one day start a group of women’s clubs, helping people from all backgrounds.

C

I began working in journalism(新闻)when I was eight. It was my mother’s idea. She wanted me to “make something”of myself, and decided I had better start young

if I was to have any chance of keeping up with the competition.

With my load of magazines I headed toward Belleville Avenue. The crowds were there. There were two gas stations on the corner of Belleville and Union. For several hours I made myself highly visible, making sure everyone could see me and the heavy black letters on the bag that said THE SATURDAY EVENING POST. When it was supper time, I walked back home.

“How many did you sell, my boy?” my mother asked.

“None.”

“Where did you go?”

“The corner of Belleville and Union Avenues.”

“What did you do?”

“Stood on the corner waiting for somebody to buy a Saturday Evening Post.”

“You just stood there?”

“Didn’t sell a single one.”

“My God, Russell!”

Uncle Allen put in, “Well, I’ve decided to take the Post.”I handed him a copy and he paid me a nickle(五分镍币). It was the first nickle I earned.

Afterwards my mother taught me how to be a salesman. I would have to ring doorbells, address adults with self-confidence, and persuade them by saying that no one, no matter how poor , could afford to be without the Saturday Evening Post in the home.

One day, I told my mother I’d changed my mind. I didn’t want to make a success in the magazine business.

“If you think you can change your mind like this,” she replied, “you’ll become a good-for-nothing.” She insisted that, as soon as school was over, I should start ringing doorbells, selling magazines. Whenever I said no, she would scold me.

My mother and I had fought this battle almost as long as I could remember. My mother, dissatisfied with my father’s plain workman’s life, determined that I would not grow up like him and his people. But never did she expect that, forty years later, such a successful journalist as me would go back to her husband’s people for true life and love.

D

As you move around your home, take a good look at the things you have. It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week.

Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them. Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year.

One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny. Most evenings Daniel wouldn’t get home until eight or nine o’clock and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New Y ork for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by.

Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm then,”says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. It’s taken some getting used to, but it’s been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays.

However, I think it’s made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.

Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. I’m not really a country girl, but I suppose I’m gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”

71.The passage tells us that .

2018年浙江省宁波市镇海中学高考英语模拟试卷(5月份)-教师用卷

2018年浙江省宁波市镇海中学高考英语模拟试卷(5月份) 副标题 一、阅读理解(本大题共10小题,共25.0分) A The quality of our seafood has been in the news a lot lately.A new study has found that people who eat seafood are also eating plastic - 11,000 pieces of microplastic per year to be exact.Researchers at the University of Ghent in Belgium found that seafood eaters are consuming plastic at a concerning rate. "Per serving of mussels (贻贝),which contains about 300 grams of mussel meat, you get 300 pieces of plastic inside your body," researchers wrote.Researchers don't yet know the implications of eating microplastic, but they worry that it could have negative consequences on our health. While we don't know what microplastic does yet to humans,we do know what it does to sea animals. In earlier studies, scientists have found that when fish eat microplastics,it prevents their growth and changes their feeding patterns. In fact, fish will stop eating natural sources of nutrients, and only go for plastic. When you're done using plastic,a small portion (部分)may be recycled. However, more than likely it's in a landfill or making its way towards the ocean.Once rubbish hits the water, sea creatures may mistake it for food. This often leads to poisoning or death. If they get caught for human's food, the plastic may very well make its way back to you - on your dinner plate. According to a study published in Science magazine, eight million tons of plastic go into our waterways every year. The problem is so serious that scientists say that by 2050 the weight of plastic in our oceans will outweigh fish. And just because it's out of sight,it doesn't mean it should be out of mind. There's no immediate way to prevent microplastic from ending up in your body. However, you can help reduce the amount of plastic reaching rivers, lakes and oceans in the first place. You can make a difference with your choices every day.Even small changes will add up.While your dinner may contain microplastic, you can help prevent the future generations from having that same problem. 1.What does the underlined word "implications" probably mean?______ A. Real functions. B. Potential benefits. C. Logical reasons. D. Possible effects. 2.What do we learn about microplastics in the oceans?______ A. They make fish grow quickly. B. Fish are sick and tired of them. C. Fish tend to be addicted to them. D. They don't affect fish's eating habits. 3.What's the writer's purpose of writing the last paragraph?______ A. To give us a final warning. B. To appeal to us for action.
