Reading Note

The Scarlet Letter offers an extraordinary insight into the norms and behavior of American Puritan society in the 17th century. The basic conflicts and problems of its main characters, however, are familiar to readers in the present. The female protagonist, has borne a child out of wedlock and has been jailed for over three months and sentenced to wear a symbol of her adultery, a scarlet “A” on her dress at all times. It concerns about the moral, emotional and psychological effect of the sin on people in general. It’s not simply a love story or a story of sin. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne uses the scarlet letters to symbolize the harshness of Puritan society, showing how they brand sinners for life.

I think these paragraphs are very meaningful:

1、"A writer of story-books! What kind of a business in life,--what mode of glorifying God, or being serviceable to mankind in his day and generation, --may that be? Why, the degenerate fellow might as well have been a fiddler!" Such are the compliments bandied between my great-grandsires and myself, across the gulf of time! And yet, let them scorn me as they will, strong traits of their nature have intertwined themselves with mine.

Analysis: This passage comes from the introductory section of The Scarlet Letter, in which the author details how he decided to write his version of Hester Prynne's story. Part of his interest in the story is personal-- he is descended from the original Puritan settlers of Massachusetts. Like Hester, he both affirms and resists Puritan values. The narrator finds Hester Prynne compelling because she represents America's past, but also because her experiences reflect his own dilemmas. Thus, for the narrator, the act of writing about Hester becomes not a trivial activity but a means of understanding himself and his social context.

2、"Mother," said little Pearl," the sunshine does not love you. It runs away and hides itself, because it is afraid of something on your bosom...It will not flee from me, for I wear nothing on my bosom yet!"

"Nor ever will, my child, I hope," said Hester." And why not, mother?" asked Pearl, stopping short..."Will it not come of its own accord, when I am a woman grown?"

Analysis: This quote is also a meditation on the significance of the scarlet letter as a symbol and an exposition of the connection between sin and humanness--one of novel's most important themes. Pearl is frequently identifies the scarlet letter on her mother's bosom with the metaphorical(and in this case also literal) lack of sunshine in her mother's life. Pearl has noticed that the other women in town don't wear scarlet letters. But, on a more figurative level, her question suggests that sin--that which the scarlet letter is intended to represent--is an inevitable part of being a mature human being.

3、"Mother," said Pearl, "Was that the same minister that kissed me by the brook?" "Hold thy peace, dear little Pearl!" whispered her mother." We must not always talk in the market-place of what happens to us in the frost."

Analysis: Hester's realization that different rules apply in the marketplace than in the froest has more significant consequences than she realize, making this yet another ironic moment in the text. Hester's statement suggests that plans made in the forest will not withstand the public

scrutiny of fantasy, possibility, and freedom--is not an option in the heart of the Puritan town, where order, prescription, and harsh punishment reign.

Otherwise, I like these sentences:

1、But, on one side of the doorway, and rooted almost at the threshold, was a wild rose-bush, covered, in this month of June, with flowers, which might be imagined to offer their fragrance and fragile beauty to the prisoner as he went in, and to the condemned criminal as he came forth to his doom, a token that the deep heart of Nature could pity and be kind to him.

2、Of an impulsive and passionate nature, she had fortified herself to encounter the stings and deadly stabs of public view, inflicting itself in every variety of insult.

3、The vulgar claimed that symbol was not mere scarlet cloth, colored in an earthly dye-pot, but was red-hot with hell's fire, and could be seen glowing all in flames whenever Hester Prynne walked abroad in the night-time. And WE must say, it burned Hester's bosom so deeply, that perhaps there was more truth in the rumor than our modern doubt may be inclined to admit.

4、Nothing was more remarkable than the instinct as it seemed, with which the child comprehended her loneliness; the destiny that had drawn a circle round about her; the whole peculiarity, in short, of her position in respect to other children.

5、Pearl's beauty was rich and luxuriant and it shined with deep a vivid colors, a bright complexion, eyes possessing intensity both of depth and glow, and hair already of deep, shiny brown, and which, in after years, would be nearly black, There was fire in her and throughout her; she seemed the chance offshoot of a passionate moment.

6、Pearl, that wild and impulsive little girl, stole softly towards him, and taking his hand in the grasp of both her own, laid her cheek against it; a caress so tender, and so careful, that her mother, who was looking on, asked herself, “Is that my Pearl?” Yet she knew that there was love in the child’s heart, although it mostly revealed itself in passion, and hardly twice in her lifetime had been softened by such gentleness as now.

7、They grew out of his heart, and symbolize, it may be, some hideous secret that was buried with him, and which he would have done better to confess during his lifetime.

8、As at the waving of a magician, rose a horrible ghost—rose a thousand ghosts—in many shapes, of death, or more awful shame, all flocking round about the clergyman, and pointing with their finger at his breast!

9、But the sea in those old times, heaved, swelled, and foamed, very much at its own will, or subject only to the wind, with hardly any attempts at regulation by human law.

The husband of a faithless woman

The long sought regard of woman

In this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter A. Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. She is always with a mind of courage. She has been alone with her child for so long, with litter communication. Shame! Hopelessness! Loneliness! Hester has to wear the letter A day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame. When a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. If she be all tenderness, she will die. If she survives, the tenderness will leave her.

A Reading Report of The Scarlet Letter The Scarlet Letter is written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, who was an influential American romantic novelist. Many of his works are inspired by Puritan New England, combining historical romance loaded with symbolism and deep psychological themes, bordering on surrealism. The Scarlet Letter makes Hawthorne known all over the world. Puritanism is the practices and beliefs of puritans. The American puritans accept the doctrine and practice of predestination, original sin and total depravity, and limited atonement through a special infusion of grace from God. But due to the grim struggle for living in the new continent, they become more and more practical. American Puritanism is so much a part of the national atmosphere rather than a set of tenets. A prominent characteristic of Hawthorne’s works is describing the dark side of society and humanity, which is inseparable to the influence of Calvinism on people's “original sin” and “intrinsic depravity” theory. Hawthorne is a pione er of psychological novel, who is good at analysis human’s “heart.” He focused on the ethics and the problem of evil, and advocated good deeds and self repentance to wash sin and purify the mind, and thus be saved. However, not all Hawthorne’s works are wrote the dark, at the same time in his expose social evils and human evil, he placed great sympathy for many kind-hearted heroes. As his friend, the great writer Herman Melville noted that Hawthorne's dark kept the dark even more bright dawn ahead. Hawthorne has made a great contribution on the development of American literature. The influence for writers such as Henry James, Faulkner and Malamud is obvious. Hawthorne's works are imaginative and structured. In addition to psychological analysis and description, also use the symbolism. His sophisticated imagery idea added romantic to his works, deepened meaning for his works. But in his works, some places are mysterious obscure. In The Scarlet Letter, he used symbolism skillfully to enhance the artistic effect. So it is regarded as the first symbolic novel in American Literature. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent things such as ideas and emotions. Symbolism is

The Scarlet Letter For long Nathaniel Hawthorne has been considered to be the first great American writer of fiction. His The Scarlet Letter is one of the greatest novels in American literature of the 19th century. This is a story of crime, sin, guilt, punishment and expiation, set in Puritan Bostin during the mid-17th century. Although the story is mainly about Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth, during my reading, I am attracted by Hester and Dimmesdale's special child –Pearl. Her particularities are as follows. Pearl inherited her mother's beauty and characteristics. She possessed a ″rich and luxuriant beauty; a beauty that shone with deep and vivid tints; a bright complexion, eyes possessing intensity both of depth and glow and hair already of a deep, glossy brown and which, in after many years, would be nearly akin to black″. No matter what clothes she was in, she was graceful, even if she torn and soiled the clothes during her game. In terms of characteristics, she was determined and rebellious. When she was look down upon and mocked by other children, she angrily and bravely rushed and drove away them; when she was asked in the Governor's hall who made her, she deliberately refused to give the proper answer that her mother had taught her but said that she had not been made at all; when her mother ask her to come to the minister in the forest, she was reluctant to do so and even washing off Dimmesdale's unwelcomed kiss with disfavor. Pearl was so close to nature that she seemed to be a part of it. As an illegitimate child, she had no father beside her. Luckily, she was not only the child of human being, she was also the child of nature – it warmly accepted her as a part of it. Having been kept away by other children, her only playmate was nature, even a stick or a bunch of rags or a flower could become the main character of the drama in her inner world. She dared to seize a shark, melt a jelly fish in the sun and hit pebble to a bird. In the forest, the wild animal took her for their same species, for example, ″A fox started from his sleep by her light footstep on the leaves, looked inquisitively at Pearl, as doubting whether it were better to steal off, or renew his nap on the same spot. The small shout essay impression after reading The first article: Today I have read a article named ‘A Shoe Pattern’. The article tells about the story of an eighteen years old boy. The boy’s parents like him very much and hope he can become a famous man. So they often tell him to study hard and they do all for him. They call him at six in the morning, after breakfast his father takes him to school in a car and in the afternoon, as soon as the young man comes back, the supper is ready. Of course, he never washes his clothes or goes to buy something in the shops. When his father was on busine ss and his mother was ill, he couldn’t do any housework. He had to do as his mother told him. Even he didn’t know where to get on the bus! When his mother gave him a shoe pattern and told him to buy a pair of shoes himself. He even left the shoe pattern at home. From the article ,we can know that we should do anything by ourselves, and we should learn to do housework on our own. We should not rely on our parents forever. We are required to share in troubles with our parents. What we should do is to comfort our parents. We should also be very careful. We should be absorbed in the things we are doing. If we are very careless, we couldn’t do anything perfectly. The second article: This article tells about the story of Bill. Bill Masters almost single–handed built up them sales force in the Houston area and developed the market position that we enjoy today. And nobody could approach him. From the essay I know that we should learn to be hard and creative. We should set Bill as an example, so that we can do well in the future. As a person, we should have the long-term and keen eyes. If we can, we would be successful soon. We are responsible to study hard and well, so that we can have the capital to own our business in the near future. The third article: This essay is a narrative writing. It describes a doctor who works 60 hours a week and takes care of 159 patients a week in the hospital and at his office. The doctor’s name is Nick Petrels. Dr. Petrels has his own TV show. He starts the show with a song and then gives medical advice. He likes to make people smile. And he thinks it’s difficult to make a sick person smile. Medicine and entertainment both try to do the same thing. They try to make people feel good. This article is very vivid and imaged. It tells us a lot. First we should learn to be helpful and friendly. If someone is in trouble, we should stretch our hands to help them. Second, we should be optimistic and hopeful. We should wear smiles every day and learn to make other people smile. I think this is very difficult but it is very useful. Third, our government and doctors should learn to Nick Petrels. They should take

"Kuan Kung VS Mulan" ---Interpreting the Image of Fa Mulan in The Woman Warrior Abstract: In The Woman Warrior, Kingston reshapes Fa Mulan from a traditional Chinese daughter to a new American woman warrior. The reshaped Mulan is criticized by Frank Chin, who says the rewritten story distorts Chinese classics, depreciates Chinese males and loses Chinese ethnicity. But the author thinks it is the reshaped story that propagates Kingston's feminism and facilitates the communication between Chinese and American culture. And it is the differences in gender and culture identity that cause the debates between Kingston and Frank Chin. However, there are indeed contradictions in the reshaped tale, which shows Kingston's boundedness as a female writer. Keywords: The Woman Warrior, Chinese culture, American culture Main Body: The folk-song-styled poem Mulan Ballad in Northern Dynasty tells a story of Mulan who disguises herself as a male soldier to take her father's place in the conscription army to resist enemies and protect her country. In The Woman Warrior, Kingston mixes the traditional ballad of Mulan with her own experiences in America and endows Mulan new individualistic and feminist characteristics---revolting gender discriminations in Chinese and American culture and asking equality and respect for Chinese Americans. However, the reshaping of Mulan legend triggers a drastic controversy. Male Chinese American writer Frank Chin gave the most furious criticisms, that censure that The Woman Warrior distorts Chinese classics, depreciates Chinese males and loses Chinese ethnicity (Zhang 2010, 51). This debate provoked by different supporters of Frank Chin and Kingston is so furious that it is called "a war between Kuan Kung and Mulan" (Liu 2008, 75). Basing on those arguments between Frank and Kingston, many people show their opinions: some say Kingston tries to shape the "other" image of China and to cater Americans' curiosity. But most eulogize Kingston's way of rewriting Chinese legend, believing that The Woman Warrior brings Chinese American women rights to speak for themselves, dispels the duality of gender and race, enriches the legend of Mulan and promotes the harmonious blending of Chinese and American culture. This paper thinks that Frank Chin's criticisms are one-sided; the reshaping enriches Chinese classics, propagates feminism and also cares for the destiny of Chinese Americans. And the controversy is mainly caused by Kingston and Frank's differences in gender and cultural identity. But there are, indeed, contradictions in the reshaped story, which shows the boundedness of Kingston as a female writer. "When we Chinese girls listened to the adults talk-story, we learned that we failed
