第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分35分)

第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。

A

That Christmas eve, the streets of Boston were filled with people. On the sidewalks, the street musicians did their best. It seemed everyone was accompanied by someone else smiling or laughing.

My family and my friends had gone home during the holiday break, and my acquaintances were involved in their own lives. I was alone. Dusk was falling, and the inevitable return to my empty apartment brought tears to my eyes.

I stopped at the local market, feeling even more depressed as people filled their baskets with goodies. Dried figs, walnuts and pecans reminded me of the gifts I received as a child in Puerto Rico on Christmas day, because the big gifts were given on the morning of the feast of the Epiphany, on January 6. I missed my family: the rambunctious(喧闹的)parties; the dancing and all the things in the Christmas. I wanted to cry for being alone in the foreign country.

In front of the church down the street, a manger(马厩)had been set up, with Mary, Joseph, and the barn animals in expectation of mid-night and the arrival of baby Jesus. I stood with my neighbors watching the scene, some of them crossing themselves, praying. As I walked home, I realized that the story of Joseph and Mary wandering from door to door seeking shelter was

much like my own history. Leaving Puerto Rico was still a wound in my soul as I struggled with who I had become in 15 years in the United States. I'd mourned the losses, but for the first time, I recognized what I'd gained. I was independent, educated, healthy and adventurous. My life was still before me, full of possibility.

Sometimes the best gift is the one you give yourself. That Christmas, I gave myself credit for what I'd accomplished so far and permission to go forward, unafraid. It is the best gift I've ever received, the one that I most treasure.

22.What is the purpose of the Para. 1 in the passage?

A. To put forward the topic.

B. To attract readers' attention.

C. To compare with the author's situation.

D. To give an example.

23.Why did the author feel even more discouraged?

24. A. Because he wanted to join the parties.

B. Because he wanted to eat the festival goodies.

C. Because the festival goodies reminded him of some snacks.

D. Because he couldn't spend Christmas with his family as he used to.

25.What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?

A. The author was proud of himself at last.

B. The author's best gift was the treasure he received.

C. The author received a best gift from his family at last.

D. The author had never received a good gift.

A MENTORING (导师制) program is giving life changing opportunities to Banbury youth. Young Inspirations was founded two years ago to provide mentoring sessions for students and unemployed young adults aged 11 to 21.

Alex Goldberg, the program's founder, said; “We set up You ng Inspirations because we wanted to give young people experiences which will potentially be life changing and broaden their outlook.”

“We try to create work experience opportunities that will really make a difference to our youth. For example, we've secured internships (实习) with world-famous firms such as Honda.”

“At a time of funding cutbacks where schools are finding it more and more difficult to offer

this kind of mentoring, it is extremely important that these opportunities are available both to help youth with their school work and grades and to give them opportunities which may help shape their futures.” Kieran Hepburn, 14, is one of a group of Banbury youth who has benefited from the program so far. In October the Banbury School pupil was accompanied by Young Inspirations staff to Paris where he was an observer at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) International Youth Forum(论坛).

The event was held for young people from around the world, to seek their views on how the future of youth and education should look. Kieran joined several hundred observers mostly in their 20s and was the only UK school pupil to attend the event. Kieran thinks the trip was a life changing experience. “Before we left I didn't quite kn ow what to make of it but when we got there we didn't stop, it was amazing,” he said, “We went to three or four hours of debates each day and then did something cultural each afternoon.”

The main theme of the forum was how youth can drive change in political and public life. It dealt with issues such as drug abuse, violence and unemployment.

Kieran said: “It has really helped me to improve my confidence and social skills as well as my school grades and I was voted most improved pupil at school in August.”

The Young Inspirations mentoring sessions take place each Friday in Banbury. For details visit https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9618109822.html,.

When asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.

For kids, happiness has a magical quality. Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved(毫不掩饰的).

In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes. Suddenly it’s conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity. I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.

In adulthood the things that bring deep joy----love, marriage, birth----also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated.

My definition of happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”. The more we can e njoy what we have, the happier we are. It’s easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even good health.

I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday. First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.

Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work. I don’t think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.

We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we’ve got to have. We’re so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it’s making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the p eople who have those things aren’t necessarily happier.

Happiness isn’t about what happens to us----it’s about how we see what happens to us. It’s the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It’s not wishing for what we don’t have, but enjoying what we do possess.

29.As people grow older, they ______________.

A. feel it harder to experience happiness

B. associate their happiness less with others

C. will take fewer risks in pursuing happiness

D. tend to believe responsibility means happiness

30.What can we learn about the author?

A. She cares little about her own health.

B. She enjoys the freedom of traveling.

C. She is easily pleased by things in daily life.

D. She prefers getting pleasure from housework.

31.What can be inferred from Paragraph 7?

A. Psychologists think satisfying work is key to happiness.

B. Psychologists’ opinion is well proved by Grandma’ case.

C. Grandma often found time for social gatherings.

D. Grandma’s happiness came from modest expectations of life.

32.People who equal happiness with wealth and success _______________.

A. consider pressure something blocking their way

B. stress their right to happiness too much

C. are at a loss to make correct choices

D. are more likely to be happy

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,有两项为多余选项。

Parties and social gatherings no longer excite us the same way they once did. 31 At parties, more people are on their smartphones than on their drinks. According to a recent International Data Corporation study, well over half of all Americans have a smartphone and reach for it the moment they wake up, keeping it in hand all day. In addition, too much of society is using smartphones while driving and as a result getting into car crashes. 34 percent of teens admit to text while driving. 32 People's attachment to their smartphones is unbelievably becoming more important than the lives of themselves and others.

Just as drivers dismiss the importance of focusing while driving on the road, many people also fail to recognize the significance of human interaction. We are starting to get used to people

seemingly talking themselves everywhere. 33 It is actually sending a message to that friend: the person I am texting is more important than you. In addition, relying on our smartphones to make friends does not give us the same advantage as being able to make new friendships in the real world. 34

As many people risk their lives and the lives of people around them just to send a text or mindlessly check their massages, smartphones are in many ways more dangerous to people. The quality of this technology is: de-advancing societal achievements and weakening the value of communication. 35

A. It is true that we can make new friends by using smartphones.

B. This is not due to a lack of desire to socialize, but the smartphones.

C. Over dependence on the smartphone gives rise to many problems.

D. And they confirm that text messaging is their number one driving interruption.

E. Face-to-face conversations will give us much stronger communication skills in the long run.

F. Not only is the smartphone affecting our desire to interact face-to-face but it is also lowering society's ability to communicate.

G. When with their friends, some people pointlessly check or send text messages in the presence of a friend.

第二节读后续写(满分25分)

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.

Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that's a big dog!” he though t. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.

Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's

bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase.

Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be te aring into his flesh.

At this moment, Paul and Beeky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

高一下学期英语6月月考试卷 一、阅读理解 1. 阅读理解 Scientists used to explore on the surface of the ocean. Now they are exploring below the surface, too. They want to know about ocean water and the plant and animal life deep in the ocean. In 1934 the scientist William Beebe dived 3000 feet below the surface in a hollow steel ball. In 1935 August Piccard dived 10330 feet In I960 his son Jean dived to a depth of 35800 feet. All these early dives were deep. But the divers could not stay down for very long. They had to come back up to the surface after a few seconds. Scientists needed to stay down longer to study life below surface. Gradually they succeeded. Cousteau, a Frenchman, was able to keep men down to a depth of 36 feet for one month and to a depth of 90 feet for a week. Now scientists are developing even better equipment. With this new equipment, men can stay below the surface for days or even weeks. In 1962 Cousteau set up a research station 35 feet below the surface. Then, in 1964, he set up another station on the ocean floor of the Red Sea. This was the first undersea station to operate without help from the surface. Many countries are now studying undersea living. The former Soviet Union has an undersea laboratory in the Crimean Sea. The United States has a

Edwarda O’Bara was a 17-year-old high school student in 1970 when she became sick from her diabetes(糖尿病)medication and slipped into a diabetic coma. Just before she lost consciousness, Edwarda asked her mother, Kaye O’Bara, to never leave her side, and her family never d id. Edwarda’s father, Joe O’Bara, and Kaye took care of their daughter—reading to her, playing her music, making sure she was turned every two hours, bathed, given insulin(胰岛素)and given nourishment through a feeding tube—until their deaths in 1976 and 2008, respectively. After that, Edwarda’s sister Colleen O’Bara took over. Her family’s unending care for her became a story told across the world. And visitors from across the world traveled to the Miami Gardens home every year, sometimes appearing at the doorstep on random days, other times for Edwarda’s yearly birthday party, a cheerful affair with decorations, balloons and cake. Through it all, Edwarda remained in a coma. But to her family and followers she remained alive. Colleen O’Bara described her as “the best sister in the whole wide world.” “She taught me so much, especially after she was in the coma, ” Colleen O’Bara said, “She taught me so much about unconditional love that I couldn’t say I had it before. She taught me about patience that I didn’t have before. I learned so much from taking care of my sister. It’s like I grew up overnight. ” In an announcement of Edwarda’s death posted Thursday on a website, Colleen O’Bara wrote: “Yesterday while taking care of Edwarda I noticed her looking directly a t me and gave me the biggest smile I had ever seen.
