The US soldier Jessica Lynch, who was rescued by the US Special Forces after being captured in Iraq, is to marry. Private (二等兵) Lynch, 20, will marry Army Sergeant (陆军军士) Ruben Contreras next June, her mother said.

The couple met two years ago in a fast-food restaurant in Texas, where both of them were stationed.

Private Lynch was captured along with six other US soldiers when Iraqi troops attacked her convoy near the city of Nasiriya in March.

The exact date and location of the wedding are being kept a secret.

Contreras' mother, Lisa Latorre, told a newspaper in her hometown, that she did not want the event to become a media focus.

“I want this to be a real wedding for them, not just a bunch of media storming

in,” Ms Latorre said. “I'm looking forward to them finally being able to be together and happy. They shall get that chance. They've been through so much.”

However, Ms Latorre did tell one detail: Private Lynch was already looking for a wedding dress.

Jessica Lynch's dramatic rescue in Iraq — after a local lawyer reportedly informed the US forces as to her whereabouts — became one of the most celebrated and controversial events of the war.

Praised as a heroine by many, others blamed her rescue as a staged event used by Pentagon (五角大楼) officials as a propaganda (宣传) exercise.

Private Lynch, who is still recovering from wounds received during the war and who reportedly has no memory of the incident, recently signed a $1,000,000 book deal to publish an account of her capture.

The book, whose name is I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story, is out this month.

A.She's a professional American writer.

B.She's a famous writer and soldier.

C.She's an American reporter in the US-Iraq War.

D.She's serving in the American army.

2.Why didn't Contreras' mother want the wedding of her son and Lynch to be a media focus?

A.Because her daughter-in-law was a married woman.

B.Because she wished her son and Lynch to have a really quiet wedding.

C.Because her daugher-in-law didn't want to be famous.

D.Because her son and Lynch hadn't made good preparations for their wedding.

3.Everything about Lynch's marriage was being kept a secret EXCEPT the wedding________.

A.date B.place

C.dress D.ring

4.Which is the CORRECT order of the things that happened in the report?

a.Iraqi troops attacked the American convoy.

b.Lynch was sent to the front in Iraq.

c.Lynch was going to marry and publish her book.

d.Lynch and Contreras were both stationed in Texas.

e.Lynch was wounded and caught.

Most respected scientists agree that we need to find another source of energy —and quickly. If we continue to burn oil and pump carbon into the atmosphere then the effects on global climate will lead to global disasters even before the oil disappears.

The British government has set a target of a 20 percent reduction in carbon emission by 2010. Central to this policy is the search for alternative, renewable forms of energy production — and this is where the serious disagreement among scientists begins.

Here, two people active in the debate about wind farms give their points of view.

Simon Shearman

“First, a few facts about wind power. Wind is one of the cheapest of the new, renewable forms of energy. It is extremely safe —no member of the public has ever been injured at a wind farm. The shallow waters around Britain are the windiest in Europe — ideal locations for wind farms and, by 2010, up to ten percent of the electricity used in the UK could be produced by wind power. I find it annoying and frustrating that the biggest objection that opponents of wind farms can come up with is that the crisis of global warming is real and something must be done urgently?”

Alice Evans

“The simple, obvious fact is that wind turbines cannot generate electricity if the wind is too light or too strong and it often is. Many scientists estimate that wind turbines generally produce only 30 percent of their capacity. This is not a reliable enough supply to enable us to close down conventional power stations. In fact, wind power

can't keep up with the growth of the demand for electricity, let alone replace other sources of power.”

It's a topic that is causing heated debate around the country — but one we must address before it's too late — before the oil runs out.

5.Many scientists have different opinions on the search for a renewable energy because________.

A.they think fossil fuels are everlasting

B.British government's target is not realistic

C.they are not sure in finding the clean and renewable

energy

D.the technology is not advanced enough

6.We can learn from the passage that________.

A.there won't be a global disaster before the world runs out of oil

B.the British government wants people to use 20 percent less oil by 2010

C.Alice Evans supports the idea of wind power

D.Simon Shearman thinks Britain a particularly suitable place for wind farms 7.If we want to generate electricity with turbines,________.

A.a light wind will do

B.we cannot make full use of turbines

C.a strong wind will do

D.we'll have enough electricity

8.What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Wind power is a good solution to energy crisis.

B.We're experiencing the oil crisis now.

C.We should find alternative energy for oil as soon as possible.

D.There is no need for us to worry about energy problem.

1.解析:选D 根据第一段第一句中的“carrying some newspapers”和后文中的“carrying the papers ________ money”可知,这个男孩在卖“报纸(papers)”。

open“开放的”;pure“纯洁的”;weak“虚弱的”。

in return for“作为对……的回报”;regardless of“不管”;in exchange for“作为……的交换”。

4.解析:选D 根据第三段第二句中的“the cake he wanted to buy for his mother”可知,这个小男孩赚钱的目的之一是给妈妈买“蛋糕(cake)”。

结合本句中的“he thought of his failure”可知,这时候这个小男孩简直就要“崩溃(broke down)”了。give in“屈服”;get away“离开”;show up“出现”。

6.解析:选D 联系本空后面的“You must shout ...” difficulty“困难”;process“过程”;goal“目标”。

9.解析:选C 根据第一段最后一句中的“sell all his papers”和第二段第一句话中的“selling papers”可知,查德在教詹森一个“卖光(sell out)”所有报纸的方法。

edition“版本”;policy“政策”;task“任务”。

hand“交给”;award“授予”;allow“允许”。

at once“立刻”;by chance“偶然”;on p urpose“故意”。

16.解析:选A 联系句中的“he sold six dozen the day before”可知,查德用自己的方式卖出的报纸很多,所以他感到非常“骄傲(proud)”。gentle“温和的”;warm“温暖的”;polite“有礼貌的”。

shout at“朝……大声喊”;nod at“朝……点头”;stare at“盯着……看”。

19.解析:选C 根据后面的一句“You're just the boy I am looking for.” bravely“勇敢地”;gratefully“感激地”;modestly“谦虚地”。

duty“责任”;business“生意”;method“方法”。

6 Unit 1 Art-Reading A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones, starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages (5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance (15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values graduallv replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess t heir own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the roles of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism (late 19th to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal. from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes. Naturally, these changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris.

6 Unit 1 A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones. If the rules of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new
