Speaking in public is most people’s least favorite thing. The reason is that we are all afraid of making fools of ourselves. The more important the speech is, the more afraid we become.

But stop being so nervous. Public speaking is easy. It’s just talking, and you talk all the time. Although I’m shy myself (honest!), I’ve been making speeches and talking on the radio and television for more than 30 years, and I can tell you that public speaking is not a “gift” like musical talent. Anybody who can talk can speak in public.

Here are some of the lessons I have learned:

Your audience is going to remember one or two of your main ideas. One or two. Not ten or twenty. Organize your idea before your speech. If you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say, your audience will understand nothing.

When I give a speech on the radio or TV live, I often write the last sentence first. We often come across the situation that we go too far from what we want to say. When you know where you’re headed. you can choose any road to get there. A strong close is very important: the last thing you say is what your audience will remember.

The length of a speech is usually within 12 minutes. If all those singing and dancing performances couldn’t be interesting enough to hold your audience’s attention all the time, what makes you think you can?

How often do you exercise? A new study finds that most American kids aged 12 to 15 aren’t getting enough physical activity. The results are based on about 800 kids. As part of the study, the kids tracked and reported on their own activity levels, and took physical exams.

U.S. fitness guideline(指南) suggest an hour or more of physical activity every day. According to the study, only 1 in 4 U.S. kids get enough physical activity.

“It’s certainly worrying to see that our kids have such a limited amount of physical activity each day,” said Dr. Stephen Pont. He is an expert on children’s health.

Few kids in the survey met the requirements for physical activity that raises the heart rate and makes them breathe harder. Overall, about 25% said they got an hour of that kind of exercise every day. Kids also reported on

which activities they did most often outside of school gym class--basketball for boys and running for girls.

The study found that fat teens were less active than normal weight girls and boys. Fat girls were slightly less active than normal-weight girls, but levels were similar among overweight and normal-weight boys. The study also says that the percent of fat children aged 2 to 19 is 17%, or about 12.5 million kids.

“There’s always room for improvement,” said health expert Tala Fakhouri, who was the leader of the study. She also said the results provide useful information to help with fitness campaigns’ such as Let’s Move, which was initiated by First Lady Michelle Obama in 2010. To encourage kids to eat right and get in shape, the First Lady visit schools and holds exercise events. She also calls on schools to offer regular gym classes.

The study also suggests kids who get physical education at school may get better grades. He said schools can do more to help by not cutting rest and giving kids more time for physical activity.

Today, we are talking about money. I can share a bit about my history with money and my new opinion when it comes to using green paper.

You’re running late for work and you can’t find your keys. What really makes you angry is that your search, you pick up and move them without realizing. This may be because the brain systems dealing with the task are working at high speed, and the visual system(视觉系统) is unable to keep step. So says Grayden Solman at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.

To study how we search, Solman’s team created a simple computer-based task about searching through many colored shapes on a computer screen. V olunteers were asked to find a certain shape as quickly as possible, while the computer monitored(监控) their actions. “Between 10 and 20 percent of the time, they would miss the object,” says Solman, even they picked it up. “We thought that was quite often.”

To find out why, the team developed a number of further experiments. To check whether volunteers were just forgetting their object, they gave a new group a list of things to remember before the search task, which they had to recall(回忆) afterwards.

The idea was to fill each volunteer’s “memory load(负荷)”, so that they were unable to hold any other information in their short-term memory. Although this was expected to have a bad effect on their performance at the search task, the extra load made no difference to the percentage of mistakes volunteers made.

To check that the volunteers were paying enough attention to the things they were moving, Solman’s team created another task about a lot of cards marked with shapes that can only be seen while the card was being moved. Again, they were surprised to see the same level of mistakes, says Solman.

Solman’s team think that the system in the brain that deals with movement is running too quickly for the visual system to keep up. While you are searching a messy house to find your keys, you might not be giving your visual system enough time to work out what each object is.
