Good morning, distinguished professors and teachers, thank you for attending the oral defense. I’

m *** and come from class *. My supervisor is professor Li. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Prof. his consistent guidance and valuable suggestions, I have finished my paper. Now I will present my efforts to you and gratefully welcome any suggestion.

The title of my paper is *************. I choose this as my topic due to the following reasons.

Firstly, I am very interested in the study of ambiguity. Ambiguity is a common phenomenon in all natural languages. As is known to all, in our daily conversations, ambiguity is often employed to achieve the effect of humor, thus creating a relaxing atmosphere and letting people feel at ease. Some jokes caused by ambiguity is very interesting.

Secondly, I have read several articles about ambiguity written by linguistics and scholars. I found my knowledge of ambiguity is very limited, superficial and nonsystematic. What I knew is just the tip of the

iceberg. So I plan to learn more about ambiguity by this research.

Thirdly, I found many scholars have carried out numerous studies of ambiguity, but a majority of these studies are focused on single language separately. Articles about comparison between English ambiguity and Chinese ambiguity are not sufficient. So it is necessary to make further study.

For the above facts, I select this title.

Next, I will present the outline of my thesis. It consists of 7 parts.

The first part gives a brief introduction to the ambiguity and structure of the thesis.

The second part is literature review, briefly introducing the development of study of ambiguity and some scholars’s main views.

The third to fifth parts focus on three types of ambiguity in English and Chinese: phonological ambiguity, lexical ambiguity, syntactic ambiguity. In every broad type, I respectively list some detailed branches and cite some vivid English and Chinese examples to explain these ambiguity phenomena. But I

put more focus on the third part and point out two differences of ambiguity between English ambiguity and Chinese ambiguity.

The part six will point out positive results by using ambiguity deliberately in daily conversations, advertisements and literary works.

The last part is the conclusion.

I hope by this contrastive research, we will have

a better understanding of ambiguity in English and Chinese and apply it to our life and study.

When reading the final draft, I still find my argument is not so comprehensive and improvements are needed. So welcome your precious suggestion.

The title of my paper is An Analysis of the Special Economic Behaviors of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind. I choose this as my topic due to the following reasons. Firstly, this literary work should be appreciated in a different and new horizon. Secondly, the concept of Economic Behaviors is connected to my first major politics and has modern significance.

This paper consists of four parts. In the first part, the Research background of this topic is introduced briefly. In the second part, the novel and the author are introduced in order to make sense of the main background of the plots. When it goes to the third part, it is analyzed with four aspects of the economic behavior’s concept, description, causes and influences. Finally, in the fourth part, the conclusion is drawn that the economic behaviors of Scarlett should be seen in a dialectic or rational way.

It can be found that there are four key points in this thesis.

Firstly, the definition of economic behavior is stated in a proper way. According to the French economy

psychologist Albu’s theory, the economic behaviors referred to in this paper are the economic activities carried out by certain economic individuals in order to realize the economic interests of the individual in the market, including financial accumulation, market exploitation, trade cooperation and so on.

Secondly, it can be found that Scarlett’s economic behavior is special in the description. In the aspect of financial accumulation, she seduced her sister’s lover and got her first sum of money to solve the pressing need for her, which reflected that she could use unscrupulous divisive tactics to reach her own benefits. In the aspect of market exploitation, or the market positioning, she bought a wasted wood factory using frank’s fund right at the moment and run it all by her own just because she knew that wood had wide market, which reflected that she had a very smart horizon in the market exploitation and could seize the opportunity. In the aspect of trade cooperation, Scarlett neglected others’ ideas and began to cooperate with her once enemy, the Yankees just to earn more, which reflected that all she tried to do is just

for the sake of enjoying her own body and mind.

Thirdly, apart from her economic behaviors’influence on her love and family and the trade of the North and the South of America, the influences on modern society is discussed in this paper. Her economic behaviors makes women begin to realize that economic independence can make them obtain independent personality and become more attractive. Her inapposite economic behaviors make more and more people realize the importance of legitimate business.

At last, it is concluded in this paper that the economic behaviors of Scarlett should be seen in rational view. Scarlett’s spirit of being a successful selfish and cruel capitalist should be approved. Also, it should be seen that her selfish and greedy behaviors are not proper in modern society.

Introduction presents an brief introduction to Sherwood Anderson and Winesburg, Ohio. Anderson(1876-1941) is one of the most important writers on American short story in 20th century. He earns a reputation as “a writers’ writer”. Winesburg, Ohio, This book has 25 short stories and it gives us a vivid description of the living condition and social environment of grotesque..

Here, Anderson defines the grotesques as the combination of the twist and sweetness. No matter how horrible they seem to the ordinary people’s eyes, they still have so many and shining qualities which make them sweet and beautiful. Moreover, Anderson never mean to make the grotesques ugly, but takes them as examples to present the unsuccessful people’s life in America in his this part, I discussed the images in details by giving 3 examples.

Then, the thesis turns to a detailed discussion of

the characters. I put

weight on the physical deformities and the psychological problems. Their physical deformities are outside signs or expressions, such as Doctor Reefy’s “large knuckles of his hands”

there are two kinds of representative psychological problems. The first problem is their inability to communicate, the grotesques cannot find a right way to communicate with each other. The second is their inability to distinguish illusion and reality, so, the grotesques are unable to live happily in reality.

Whereafter, This part studies the causes of grotesquery. The causes include the personal causes and the social causes.

In conclusion, Sherwood Anderson’s use of “grotesque”is quite different. He shows great understanding towards them. Although they have physical deformities and psychological problems, they never give up the search for love and understanding. In modern society, we are all facing the high-speed development of technology and economy, as well as the weakness in human nature. In this case, people need more

powerful inner support and even stronger belief for a better life.
