The world’s most faithful male is a stork(鹳). Every year, for the past 16 years, he’s flown 14,000 km from his winter home in South Africa to a small village in Croatia, Europe, to be with his disabled mate, who cannot fly due to an old gunshot wound.

The amazing love story between Klepetan and Malena has made the two storks renowned in Croatia. Almost every Croatian knows their story. Every March, the male stork flies back to the village of Brodski Varos, where Malena is waiting for him. They mate and have new babies each year, which Klepetan then teaches how to fly before migrating(迁徙) with them to South Africa. The injured female stays behind, but she’s always well taken care of during the cold winter.

71-year-old Stjepan Vokic adopted Malena in 1993 after finding her near a pond. She had been injured, and would have surely ended up as a meal for foxes, but he took her home and nursed her back to health. She wouldn’t be able to migrate for the winter ever again, but Vokic made sure her winter home was as comfortable as possible.

The storage building Malena spends her winters in has a nest, heating and aquarium, and V okic bathes her regularly and rubs cream on her feet to stop them drying out. So when Klepetan arrives in spring, she’s ready

to add more baby storks to the 62 they already have together. “I also take her fishing since I can’t take her to Africa. We even watch TV together,” V okic said.

Klepetan wears a tracking ring on one of his legs, and his final migratory destination has been traced to a wetland near Cape Town, in South Africa, some 14,500 km from Brodski Varos. It takes him over a month to fly back to his beloved Malena every spring.

24. Why doesn’t Malena migrate with Klepetan in winter?

A. Because she dislikes long-distance flying.

B. Because an injury prevents her from doing so.

C. Because she has to stay behind to accompany Vokic.

D. Because the winter in South Africa isn’t appealing to her.

25. What does the underlined word “renowned” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?

A. Attractive.

B. Respectable.

C. Controversial.

D. Famous.

26. Which of the following words can best describe Stjepan Vokic?

A. Generous and talented.

B. Careful and ambitious.

C. Kind and considerate.

D. Brave and professional.

27. According to the text, the tracking ring on Klepetan’s leg helps to find out .

A. where he migrates to during the winter

B. the length of his migratory time period

C. the distance he flies during his migration

D. what he experiences during his migration

C

Most cultures use storytelling to pass down family history using the power and energy of the human voice. Ever since our ancestors could first communicate, we have gathered to share our stories. We have passed along creation tales and tragic stories of love lost. We have repeated accounts of real heroism and simple stories of family history. When our ancestors lived closer to the land and to each other, the practice of storytelling was combined with ritual and occasion. Members of the tribe would often gather around the fire to hear their family history recited aloud by an elder or master storyteller. Listeners could track how their own lives, and the lives of their parents, interwove(交织) with the lives of the other tribe members, as everyone’s ancient relatives once played out similar life dramas together.

As a custom, some cultures’storytellers repeat the same tale over and over because they believe that each time you hear it, you come to the story as a different person and view the plot and characters in a new light. Hearing the story over and over is a way to judge where you have been and where you are now on your path of personal evolution. It also helps the younger generation learn the stories so that they can pass them to forthcoming generations.

When we hear others tell stories, we can laugh at their humorous adventures, feel the thrill of exciting encounters, see parts of ourselves in them, and learn from the challenges they face. Though most of our formal traditions of storytelling are lost, it does not mean we have to be without. We can begin new practices in our own families of listening to one another, of honoring our own journey, and witnessing the journeys of those around us. By building new practices of storytelling, we give ourselves and the ones we love an opportunity to draw ever closer in our shared human experience.

28. What do we know about the earliest form of storytelling?

A. It focused on recording family history.

B. It covered many aspects of human life.

C. It was mostly about heroes in real life.

D. It was mainly to amuse the tribe members.

29. Why were some tales repeated frequently by the storytellers?

A. To entertain the younger generations.

B. To avoid forgetting the plots and characters.

C. To test whether the listeners were faithful to the tribe.

D. To make the listeners reflect on their personal growth.

30. According to the author, the practice of storytelling.

A. won’t last long without new forms

B. should continue in its traditional way

C. remains a good way to record family history

D. helps us develop closer ties with our loved ones

31. What might be the most suitable title for the text?

A. Storytelling and Public Relations

B. Storytelling to Connect the Generations

C. Cultures Preserved Through Storytelling

D. Track Down Your Family History in Stories

D

A green think tank has warned of the risk of unintended consequences from the wave of concern about plastics.

The Green Alliance said plastics played a valuable role and couldn’t be simply abolished. It wants to transform the notion of a “War on Plastics” into a “War on Plastic Litter”. It warns that rejecting all plastic food packaging could prove ineffective.

Agriculture is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, so reducing food waste is vital. Well-packed food —perhaps in plastic —helps protect food from damage, so it can actually save on greenhouse gases.

The other potential area of concern is the substitution of plastics with plant-based materials. Forests are already being felled to grow crops and wild land is also disappearing to produce bio-fuels for cars and electricity generation.

The Green Alliance fears that a demand for plastic substitutes could also increase the pressure for defor- estation(森林采伐). This would, in turn, lead to more greenhouse gases that would warm the oceans people are anxious to protect.

The Green Alliance’s Libby Peake told BBC News: Plastics are clearly a huge problem but we have concerns that legal public anger will lead businesses and governments to rush into the wrong decisions.

Lego announces that in future it will make its toys from plastics derived(获得) not from oil, but from sugar cane(甘蔗). It won the headline: “Lego goes green one brick at a time”. But the firm confirmed that the “eco” bricks would be made from polyethylene —that’s exactly the same chemical compound as plastic derived from oil.

Ms Peake said: “Turning plants into plastic in this way means that, at the end of life, it won’t be biodegrad- able(可降解的) and will have all the potential shortcomings of traditional plastic.”

Lego has done everything right to try to sustainably source material for its bio-bricks. But there’s clearly nowhere near enough sugar cane that can be sustainably sourced if other companies want to follow suit.

32. What should we do about plastics according to the Green Alliance?

A. Avoid using them.

B. Reduce the use of them.

C. Deal with plastic waste properly.

D. Make them environment-friendly.

33. Why does the Green Alliance take a negative attitude to plastic substitutes?

A. They will bring about new problems.

B. They are more harmful than plastics.

C. They are more expensive than plastics.

D. They won’t be accepted by many people.

34. What did Libby Peake think of Lego’s move?

A. It will turn out a vain attempt.

B. It will make a great difference.

C. It will does more harm indeed.

D. It will produce economic benefits.

35. What would probably happen if other companies follow the example of Lego?

A. Greenhouse gases will be reduced.

B. The prices of sugar cane will go up.

C. Plastic pollution will become worse.

D. Their products will last longer.
