Schools will teach pupils the finer points of personal banking, hire purchase agreements, savings schemes and interest repayments in an attempt to make them more financially secure.

The Retirement Commission has launched a pilot project. It hopes to see money sense included in the national school programme by 2010.

Backed by the major banks, the scheme will start at new-entry level but will eventually include high school courses as demanded by the National Certificate of Educational Achievement.

Retirement Commissioner Diana Crossan said the scheme would help young people understand increasingly complex financial systems and concepts, which had changed rapidly in the past 20 years.Cash machines now gave 24-hour access to cash, and the use of loans and credit has become widespread and acceptable.

Pupils would learn how to manage their finances, about hire purchase contracts, interest rates, bad credit ratings, and the importance of financial planning and saving.

Financial skills would be taught through existing subjects such as maths, social sciences and technology.

“All young people who come through the school system should have an understanding

of the financial systems in New Zealand and the world, and an understanding of what money means in their lives and how they can manage it,”Crossan said.

“Some people get into a lot of debt and need help.We know the horror stories of people having several credit cards maxed out(透支)because they just don't know how to restructure their debt.”

Banks are contributing more than $400,000 toward the pilot, which includes Scots College Prep,Tawa Intermediate, and Hampton Hill Primary School in Wellington and Brooklyn School in Nelson.

The grammarphobia is the fear of grammar. This fear attacks almost everybody at one time or another, and it's most likely to strike people during English or other language arts classes.Even people who love reading and writing have been known to get feverish and shaky at the possibility of turning in homework with grammar or spelling mistakes.Though writing may be enjoyable, being correct most definitely is not!

Grammarphobes,it's time to put your fears behind you.Grammar isn't that horrible. Here's why.

Grammar is simply the art of putting words together to make sentences.Whenever you use words to express yourself, you're using grammar. You do this all the time without even thinking. So why think about it?Because good grammar helps you convey the ideas you intend to.If your words aren't right,or if they're not in the right order, the person you're talking to might get the wrong idea. This can have embarrassing consequences.

I'll explain by using what I call the Bad News Rule. Here's how it works. You learn that your favorite uncle has broken his leg in a skiing accident.Y ou send him an instant message:

“I heard you're bad news.”Oops! You meant to say the news was bad,but you've actually said that your uncle himself is bad news! You wrote “you're”—a word that's short for “you are”—when you should have used “your”.

See?Grammar helps us understand each https://www.wendangku.net/doc/9013045302.html,municating is similar to playing cards. To make sense,we have to play according to the same rules. What are the rules for playing the game of English?Grammar!

Another example is I and me.You use them to refer to the same person(yourself),but in different situations—I am busy!Don't bother me!Grammar, you see,is just a matter of making choices.

See what I mean?Grammar isn't like what you think it is.So grammarphobes,it's time to put your fears behind you!

语篇理解:语法,是不是一提起它,你就害怕?患有语法恐惧症的人,要认识到语法的存在是必然的,它可以帮助我们平时的交流和学习,所以没有必要对此感到恐惧。

26.What can we know from Para.1?

A.The grammarphobia is common among language learners.

B.People who love reading and writing care more about grammar.

C.Reading and writing help improve a person's knowledge of grammar.

D.It's impossible to write an article without a grammar mistake.

解析:细节理解题。根据第一段的“it's most likely to strike people during English or other language arts class”,可知A为正确答案。

答案:A

27.According to the text,grammarphobes are ________.

A.people who consider grammar boring

B.people who are afraid of grammar

C.people who take language arts classes

D.people who pay too much attention to grammar

解析:词义猜测题。根据第一段可知grammarphobia指“the fear of grammar”;再根据第二段的“it's time to put your fears behind you”,可知grammarphobes指患有语法恐惧症的人。

答案:B

28.The underlined word “it” in Para.4 refers to________.

A.an explanation B.a wrong idea

C.the grammarphobia D.the Bad News Rule

解析:文章结构题。“Here's how it works”之后举了一个例子:由于误用

“you're”将“the news was bad”表达成了“your uncle himself is bad news”,它对“Bad News Rule”进行了解释。

答案:D

29.The example in Para.4 is used to prove that ________.

A.grammar isn't as horrible as some people think it is

B.grammar is used whenever you express yourself

C.expressions with grammar mistakes may convey wrong ideas

D.expressions with grammar mistakes are against the Bad News Rule

解析:文章意图题。作者举“Bad News Rule”的事例是为了证明上段的“If your words aren't right,or if they're not in the right order, the person you're talking to might get the wrong idea. This can have embarrassing consequences”。

答案:C

30.Which of the following is a reason why grammar is NOT horrible?

A.Grammar is as interesting as playing cards.

B.Grammar is used to refer to something.

C.Grammar is just a matter of making choices.

D.Grammar is easy to learn if you use skills.

解析:细节理解题。作者为了证明自己的观点,提了两个论据:“Grammar is

simply the art of putting words together to make sentences”和“Grammar, you see,is just a matter of making choices”,因此C为正确答案。

答案:C

C

I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 76 students who would be my English literature class. Having taught in the US for 17 years,I have no doubt about my ability to hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for the literature of my mother tongue.

I was shocked when the monitor shouted,“stand up!” The entire class rose as I entered the room and I was somewhat confused about how to get them to sit down again, but once the embarrassment(尴尬) was over, I quickly regained my calmness and admiration. I went back to my office with the rosy glow which came from a strong sense of achievement.

My students kept diaries. However, as I read them the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said, “Our literature teacher didn't teach us anything today perhaps her next lecture will be better.”Greatly surprised.I read diary after diary, each expressing a similar theme “Didn't I teach them anything? I

described the entire Western philosophy and laid the historical background for all the works we will study in class,” I complained. “How should they say I didn't teach them anything?”

It was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as those of my students. I thought a teacher's job was to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so that students could draw their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher's job was to provide exact information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!

However, I also learned a lot,and the experience with my Chinese students has made me a better American teacher, knowing how to teach in a different culture. 31.We can know that on the first day the writer________.

第二节:读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

China news, Guangzhou, January 3—According to a random survey covering

3,000 elementary and high school students in Guangzhou, the two groups of students have very different career outlooks. Most pupils dream of starting their own business after graduation, while most high school students long for a steady job.

“It's so cool to be your own boss, and you can decide when to start a day's work,” said Jay (not his real name), a fifth grade pupil. The hottest topic between him and his classmates is usually about their future careers, and many of them have already had a thorough plan for the future. Jay says that he will start his business with his friends in a few years after graduating from college, when he will have already accumulated some money.

High school students' choices tend to be more reasonable. The majority of them say they will take an ordinary full-time job. Though some of them also appreciate the freedom of freelancing(自由职业), most of them will think twice before starting their own businesses, as it is extremely difficult to start a career from scratch.

参考范文:

According to a survey, most elementary school students in Guangzhou hope to start their own business in the future, while most high school students prefer to take an ordinary job.

It's true that career is a hot topic among school students. I have dreamed of being an excellent doctor since my childhood. First, I'm often told that to be a doctor, I can have a very good income, with which I can live more comfortably. Besides, if I have enough money, I can also help the poor. More importantly, doctors are angels to the patients, who can help the sick get rid of pain or even give a second life to the dying. I can imagine

how great I will feel when seeing a patient recover from the illness because of my help.

Now what I should do is to study hard to make sure I can enter a famous medical university, where I can get the required knowledge and skills to be a good doctor.

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly dise ase of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousand s of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted t o face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never b e controlled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera ki lled people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangerous gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the disease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person die d. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed eviden ce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his enqu iry. As the disease spread quickly through poor neighbourhoods, he began to gat her information. In two particular streets, the cholera outbreak was so severe that more than 500 people died in ten days. He was determined to find out why. First he marked on a map the exact places where all the dead people had liv ed. This gave him a valuable clue about the cause of the disease. Many of the d eaths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 a nd 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he made further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 Cambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water from the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. H e immediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle f rom the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed d own. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deat hs that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away f rom Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it deliver ed to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drin king the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with ce rtainty that polluted water carried the virus.

-必修 5 Unit 2 The United Kingdom Reading PUZZLES IN GEOGRAPHY People may wonder why different words are used to describe these four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. You can clarify this question if you study British history. First there was England. Wales was linked to it in the thirteenth century. Now when people refer to England you find Wales included as well. Next England and Wales were joined to Scotland in the seventeenth century and the name was changed to "Great Britain". Happily this was accomplished without conflict when King James of Scotland became King of England and Wales as well. Finally the English government tried in the early twentieth century to form the United Kingdom by getting Ireland connected in the same peaceful way. However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government. So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack. To their credit the four countries do work together in some areas (eg, the currency and international relations), but they still have very different institutions. For example, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland have different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams for competitions like the World Cup! England is the largest of the four countries, and for convenience it is divided roughly into three zones. The zone nearest France is called the South of England, the middle zone is called the Midlands and the one nearest to Scotland is known as the North. You find most of the population settled in the south, but most of the industrial cities in the Midlands and the North of England. Although, nationwide, these cities are not as large as those in China, they have world-famous football teams and some of them even have two! It is a pity that the industrial cities built in the nineteenth century do not attract visitors. For historical architecture you have to go to older but smaller towns built by the Romans. There you will find out more about British history and culture. The greatest historical treasure of all is London with its museums, art collections, theatres, parks and buildings. It is the centre of national

But he became inspired when he tho ught about helping ordinary people exposed to cholera. This was the deadly diseas e of its day. Neither its cause nor its cure was understood. So many thousands of terrified people died every time there was an outbreak. John Snow wanted to face the challenge and solve this problem. He knew that cholera would never be contr olled until its cause was found. He became interested in two theories that possibly explained how cholera kille d people. The first suggested that cholera multiplied in the air. A cloud of dangero us gas floated around until it found its victims. The second suggested that people absorbed this disease into their bodies with their meals. From the stomach the dis ease quickly attacked the body and soon the affected person died. John Snow suspected that the second theory was correct but he needed evide nce. So when another outbreak hit London in 1854, he was ready to begin his en quiry. Many of the de aths were near the water pump in Broad Street (especially numbers 16, 37, 38 an d 40). He also noticed that some houses (such as 20 and 21 Broad Street and 8 and 9 Cambridge Street) had had no deaths. He had not foreseen this, so he mad e further investigations. He discovered that these people worked in the pub at 7 C ambridge Street. They had been given free beer and so had not drunk the water f rom the pump. It seemed that the water was to blame. Next, John Snow looked into the source of the water for these two streets. He found that it came from the river polluted by the dirty water from London. He imm ediately told the astonished people in Broad Street to remove the handle from the pump so that it could not be used. Soon afterwards the disease slowed down. He had shown that cholera was spread by germs and not in a cloud of gas. In another part of London, he found supporting evidence from two other deaths that were linked to the Broad Street outbreak. A woman, who had moved away fr om Broad Street, liked the water from the pump so much that she had it delivered to her house every day. Both she and her daughter died of cholera after drinking the water. With this extra evidence John Snow was able to announce with certaint y that polluted water carried the virus. To prevent this from happening again, John Snow suggested that the source o f all the water supplies be examined. The water companies were instructed not to expose people to polluted water any more. Finally "King Cholera" was defeated. COPERNICUS’ REVOLUTIONRRY THEORY
