第一节:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

Ask any person who is successful in whatever he or she is doing what motivates him/her, and very likely the answer will be "goals". Goal Setting is extremely important to motivation and success. So what motivates you? Why are you in college? If you are in college because that's what your parents want, you may find it difficult to motivate yourself. Sure, it's possible to succeed with someone else providing the motivation for you. ("If you graduate from college, I'll give you a car!" or worse "If you don't graduate from college, you won't get a car.") But motivation that comes from within really makes the difference.

Certainly, you need some intelligence, knowledge base, study skills, and time management skills, but if you don't have motivation, you won't get far. Think about this analogy. You have a car with a full tank of gas, a well-tuned engine, good set of tires, quadraphonic CD system, and a sleek, polished exterior(外表). There it sits.

This car has incredible potential. However, until a driver sits behind the wheel, puts the key in the ignition(点火装置), and cranks it up, the car doesn't function. You guessed it; the KEY is MOTIVATION.

Interest is an important motivator for a student. So is a desire to learn. When you link these two things together, you create success. Often success in an endeavor(努力) leads to more interest and a greater desire to learn, creating an upward spiral(螺旋形) of motivation toward a goal you have established.

So be honest with yourself. Are you genuinely interested in being in college? Have you set realistic goals for yourself? How can you develop the internal motivation that really counts? When it comes to motivation, KNOWING is not as important as DOING.

41. Why does the writer give the example of a car in the second paragraph?

A.Because people can never go far without a good car.

B. Because a good car motivates some college students to study harder.

C. Because a good car is a symbol of being a success.

D. Because motivation leads people to success like it starts a car.

42. What is the CORRECT comparison between the internal motivation and the external (外部的)motivation?

A. Only the internal motivation can result in success.

B. Internal motivation is more important than external motivation.

C. Internal motivation and external motivation has equal importance.

D. External motivation is enough for people to achieve success.

43. According to the article the following factors can push people towards their goals EXCEPT __________?

A. interest

B. the desire to learn

C. the knowledge of motivation

D. the sense of success

44. What’s the main purpose of the article?

A. To encourage everyone to develop motivation for whatever they are doing..

B. To inspire college students to set goals for their college life.

C. To imply that the less motivated college students quit the college.

D. To call on parents to give up their over-protection of their children.

45. What may be the writer’s advice to the potential readers?

A. The goals you set for yourself shouldn’t be far beyond your reach.

B. You needn’t attend college if you are really not interested in it.

C. You should work harder to win praise from others.

D. Honesty is the best policy to solve problems in your life.

B

My destination is the River Walk, one of the most popular places in all of Texas. In the first half of 20th century, to control flooding, the city fathers began redirecting the San Antonio River. They built a network of canals that pass through the downtown area. At nearly every street corner, stairs lead down to walkways on both sides of the canals.

The River Walk is linked with cafes, bars, shops --- and, of course, plenty of bridges. You can easily cross over to the other side without having to return to the street. It’s a constant party along the River Walk, with music and festivals throughout the year. The Mud Festival, for example, takes place each January, when the city empties this section of the river to clean it out. That’s when the Mud King and Mud Queen are crowned.

No visit to Texas would be complete without seeing a rodeo --- another aspect of this part of the country that is completely foreign to someone from New England. The announcer walks on stage and gets the crowd excited with talk about the courageous cowboys who’ll be performing. While he’s talking, a band plays sad songs about love gone wrong.

Suddenly the announcer calls for silence. He takes off his tall hat and asks us to join him in prayer. We pray for the cowboys who are, we are told, risking their lives to entertain us, as well as for the bulls and other animals taking part in the shows. We pray for the tourists who are visiting. The rodeo gets going and the fun begins.

Our prayers for the cowboys and animals are answered, and nobody gets hurt. But as we walk over to the cowboy dance hall after the show to enjoy a Texas-size barbecue, it’s clear that not enough prayers were said for the bulls’ less athletic relatives --- the ones not chosen for rodeo work. They’ll be our meal. It seems that moving too slowly has its disadvantages, too.

46.What do you know about the River Walk from the article?

A. People hold parties to celebrate festivals here every day.

B. It refers to the sidewalks on either side of this section of the San Antonio River.

C. There are many bridges that connect the River Walk and the Main Street.

D. Stairs link the River Walk to cafes, bars and shops in the street.

47. Which of the following statements about Mud festival is NOT true?

A. Mud Festival dates back to the first half of 20th century.

B. Mud Festival is held in January every year.

C. Mud King and Mud Queen are chosen in the festival

D. Mud Festival is celebrated to clear the mud of the San Antonio River.

48. What does the underlined word ―rodeo‖ refer to?

A. One aspect of the American country life.

B. The concert given by a band.

C. The cowboys’ performance.

D. The grand Texas-size barbecue.

49. Why do some bulls become the visitors’ meal?

A. Because they do not run as fast as those taking part in the shows.

B. Because the visitors do not pray enough for them before the shows.

C. Because they lose the competition to their relatives in the shows.

D. Because they are only beef cattle intended as people’s food.

50. Which of the following words can NOT be used to describe the writer’s mood?

A. light-hearted

B. excited

C. anxious

D. humorous

C

An oasis is a fertile spot in the middle of a desert, an island of life in an ocean of temperature extremes. Any oasis always contains one or more springs. Oases make it possible to survive long walks through the desert. In large deserts such as the Sahara, towns group around sources of water such as oases and rivers.

What causes an oasis? An oasis is actually a spot in the desert where the altitude is low enough that the water table is right below the surface, resulting in the presence of springs. Even in a desert, it rains occasionally, and this produces a water table just above the bedrock, usually several hundred feet below the surface. Sand is very porous, so most water runs right through it and down to the bedrock.

Deserts consist of many millions of tons of sand. There is only one natural force capable of moving it in considerable amounts: the wind. Although, in an average dust storm, ten cubic feet of air only holds about an ounce of sand, a cubic mile of air can move about 4,600 tons of it, leading to considerable erosion(侵蚀). A severe storm is capable of moving as much as 100 million tons of sand.

In certain areas where large quantities of sand are moved by storms, erosion make holes all the way down to the water table, putting it just below the surface. Seeds planted in the ground there are capable of sprouting(发芽)and extending roots into the moist land, producing an oasis.

Sometimes, the oasis produced by the wind can be very large when vast areas of desert are wiped clean by storms. The great Kharga oasis in the Sahara, for example, is over 100 miles long and 12 to 50 miles in width. The oasis was produced when erosion caused the edges of a great depression to sink down to the water table.

51. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A. Where there is an oasis, there is a town.

B. Where there is an oasis, there is a spring.

C. It often rains around an oasis.

D. An oasis is right in the center of a desert.

52. The underlined word ―porous‖ in the second paragraph probably means _______.

A. allowing liquid or air to pass through slowly

B. small enough to move easily

C. light enough to carry conveniently

D. easy enough to cross smoothly

53. According to the passage, what makes it possible for a dust storm to come into being?

A. Occasional rain and lack of plants.

B. Seeds planted in the ground.

C. Strong wind and a large amount of sand.

D. Extreme temperature and dust.

54. What do we know about the great Kharga oasis in the passage?

A. It is less than 100 miles in length.

B. It is just below the surface.

C. It is right in the middle of the Sahara.

D. It results from the wind and erosion.

55. This passage is most likely to be found in ________.

A. a travel guide

B. a story book

C. a technical report

D. a geography book

M: Hey, Karen, you are not really reading it, are you?

W: Pardon?

M: The book! You haven’t turned the page in the last ten minutes.

W: No, Jim, I suppose I haven’t. I need to get thro ugh it, though, but I keep wandering away.

M: So it doesn’t really hold your interest?

W: No, not really. I wouldn’t bother with it, to be honest. But I have to read it for a lecture. I’m at a university.

M: I’m sorry to hear that.

W: I should say, I don’t like Dickens at all really. Indeed, I am starting to like the whole course less and less.

M: It’s not just the book, it’s the c ourse as well?

W: Yeah, in a way, although the cou rse itself isn’t really that bad, a lot of it is pretty good, in fact. And the lecture is fine, as to me. You see, I prefer music to English, but my parents took me out of it.

M: So the courses are O K as such, it’s just that had i t been left to you, you would choose a different one.

W: Oh, they had my best interest and heart of course, my parents, they always do, do they? They believe that my job

prospect would be pretty limited with the degree of philosophy. Plus, they give me a really generous allowance, but I am beginning to feel that I’m wastin g my time and their money. They would be so disappointed though if I told them I was quitting.

W: Hi, Kavin.

M: Your idea of setting up a radio station is great. But I have some questions for you.

W: Oh, what are they?

M: I think money is the first problem. What do we have in terms of funding?

W: Hmm, not a lot.

M: We could get some donations.

You might think that the most dangerous type of eating, for women, is overeating. But according to medical records, that’s not the case. Most of the women who die of eating problems suffer from starving themselves. While overeaters find themselves quite OK except that they are just fat, those who starve themselves have a different experience.

To look beautiful, many women eat very little. But without enough food, they are weak in health. They may feel

sick in different moments – at meetings, in the shopping malls, or while walking around. This becomes especially dangerous when they are driving or operating machines.

The reason for this is society’s demand on women to be overly thin. It’s reported that over 100 women die each year in the United States alone, just because they want to meet this demand.

What we should know is that when your life is in danger, is it meaningful to achieve that kind of beauty? It’s necessary for those who want to keep skinny to reconsider the meaning of beauty.

W: Hey, Mike. What are you reading? You seem so involved in that book.

M: I’m reading a novel The Call of the Wild. It’s rather famous. I’m rather moved by the story.

W: I’ve heard of it. Is it a story that tells of a dog in the Gold Rush?

M: Bingo! It’s one of literary classics. I strongly recommended you to read it. It tells a lot.

W: OK, I will. But I prefer short stories since they take less time and require less attention. And they often uncover some deep meaning as well.

M: Well, I still prefer novels, because I enjoy the course of careful reading. And I also like poems.

W: Me too. The beauty of sound in poems is wonderful and we can learn a lot.

M: That’s true. We should find some time and read poems together.

W: What a good idea! So that we can exchange our ideas. Let’s do it. Tomorrow afternoon after class, OK?

M: I’d love to.

Once a very popular and prosperous business activity, Japan’s karaoke industry has slowed d own. As the economic problems have been lasting, Japanese have less to sing. Karaoke companies are now trying hard to develop new ideas to attract singers back to karaoke. These include a new, high-tech machine that allows people to sing like famous singers, and ―theme rooms‖, which are designed with the use of Asian cartoon figures, intending to attract younger crowds. The new karaoke machine is being developed by a professor from the US Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The machine uses a technology called C-Sound that automatically adjusts the speed and tone of any song being played to match the way the singer is singing. In the past, a DJ has to operate the machine and make the adjustment, but the new product is the first machine to do it automatically.

Dear friends,

Do you want to live in a beautiful world? So it is our obligation to maintain the ecological balance. To fulfill this task, we should bear the following ecological codes in mind. First, while sticking to the habit of walking to school, we should eat at least five kinds of fruits and vegetables a day. It’s also important to recycle everything recyclable and cherish our school’s environment by picking up any litter and turning off the taps and the lights. Let’s all take action now and contribute to the prosperity of our mother—the earth.

Thank you!

第二节:任务型写作

A possible version:

As is described in the story, the hound and the housedog were given different trainings because their master assigned them different tasks. Therefore the two dogs led two kinds of lives. (31 words)

It is evident that what the hound gets from its training is of life-long benefit. First, through the hard experience, the hound has gained the ability for survival. Second, the training has cultivated the hound’s independence. Last but not least, a strong character with great determination has been formed, which will help the hound bravely face challenges.

If I were to be trained, I would prefer the training the hound has received. Take myself for example, having been brought up in a comfortable environment, I was dependent. Then the military training I received when I was in Primary School taught me how to shoulder life responsibility. The tight schedule, the strict rules, the serious officers and the hard training made me suddenly realize what life is like. From then on, I became independent and strong-willed. Therefore, I believe we need hard training to upgrade ourselves.

A. Kids' imaginations are in overdrive when it comes to composing Christmas lists - as they ask for a live walrus(海象), the power of invisibility(隐身) and Taylor Swift. Christmas is less than two months away, and little ones are already planning their letters to Santa. But one survey has revealed the weirdest items to turn up on Christmas lists, and they include mythical monsters and mega-selling pop stars. Conducted by GAME, the study also reveals a significant break from festive tradition when it comes to writing wish lists. One in three, 29%, children now use technology such as iPads or mobile phones instead of the traditional pen and paper, while a further one in five (19%) will rely on parents to take note of all the things they point at during TV adverts and during trips to the shops. With more than three million lists likely to be drafted, parents are prepared for a flurry of requests including many that even Santa would struggle to achieve. As part of the study, parents were asked to reveal some of the weird and wonderful items that made it onto their child's Christmas lists. Fred Prego, marketing director at GAME, says: "Choosing what to get your kids at Christmas can be a bit of a minefield(雷区).” As the research shows, most kids will be making note of the things that they want this half term and a lot of lists are going to be written." 21. The underlined word “overdrive” in paragraph one means _______.
