Follow that trash!

People don’t like to talk about trash. Trash is smelly, dirty, broken, useless stuff. That’s why we threw it out. But everyone konws that trash 21 our environment. It can pollute our land, water and air. So itis important to recycle our trash 22 .

Some Americans were interested in recycling and they 23 what really happened to their trash. So, what did they do? They 24 and decided to “Follow that trash”!

They took some items out of their recycling bin and put electronic tags on them. The tags would send signals to 25 , so the people could follow their trash on its journey. They found that some trash only travelled 26 , but some travelled hundreds of kilometers. Some trash was recycled but much of it went into landfills.

Waste management companies in America think this detective work will be 27 to them. Getting rid of waste is very expensive and this “trash tracking” will help them to become more efficient. It will save their time and money.

However, the trash detectives say it is also important to reduce the amount of trash we produce, 28 . If we produce less waste, we won’t have to worry about where it goes.

Canadian cyclist creates GPS doodles(涂鸦)

Stephen Lund is a cyclist. He is also an artist. But unlike most art ists, he doesn’t use a pen or a brush to create his works of art. All he uses is his bike and a GPS app.

Some of Lund’s GPS doodles include simple maeeages like “Happy Birthday”, while others are more complex drawings of animals, fictional characters and pop stars. So far, he has doodle Queen Victoria, a giant anteater, a dinosaur and a giraffe. His largest creation so far is a portrait of a mermaid. It took him 11 hours of recycling and he rode 220 kilometers to complete it.

Lund started his extraordinary project on January 1, 2015, as a way to wish people a “Happy New Year.” But he kept going after that first doodle, creating a total of 85 works over the course of the year. All of them are posted on his website, gpsdoodle, com.

Jenney: I was reading a science magazine called Nature yesterday. It had some interesting articles about life 100 years from now. They talked of many kinds of medical technologies which would allow people to live to be 110 years old.

Janet: Oh, I wouldn’t like that at all. I am quiet satisfied to live for 70 or 80 years. I don’t want to l ive any longer than that. I hate to get so old that I could not look after myself. As long as I keep f it and healthy I am happy, but I don?t want to become old and useless to society.

Jenney: Well, the magazine also talked about other things that will happen in the future. For exam ple, most people will not travel to work but will communicate online or through video or telepho ne. Most industries will be operated by robots and controlled by computers. Many people will spe nd less time at work, but they will spend time doing other things such as looking after their parents .

Janet: That sounds awful as well. I enjoy working and I want to continue to work throughout my li fe. I suppose this magazine also talked about technology in the home.

Jenney: Yes, it did. It said it would be possible in the future for everyone to have a home computer which would do everything for you. For example, it would prepare your food, play music and vid eos and make videophone calls for you. I would love that! It seems quiet certain that wealthy peop le could have these computers in just a few years? time.

Janet: At the same time, the poor people will not have enough food to eat and there will not be en ough medicine to keep them healthy. The wonderful future that new medicine and new technology will bring is only for rich people in the rich countries. What will happen to the rest of world’s pop ulation? I hope 100 years from now we will have got rid of poverty (贫

The inspiring story of a blind CEO

At the age of 23, Indian entrepreneur Srikanth Bollar is the CEO of a company valued at over $7.5 million in 2016 . That’s really a wonderful achievement. But what’s truly inspiring is that he managed to do it despite being born blind.

When Srikanth was born, several of his parents’ friends and relatives adv ised them to leave him. That would have been the easier thing to do because they were very poor .But the parents chose to not only keep the boy, but also to raise him in a positive, loving environment . ‘They’re the strictest people I know.’ Srikanth often says.

And their excellent parenting has paid off – today, Srikanth is the CEO of Bollant Industries. The company employs disabled people to produce eco-friendly products. The products are mostly made from leaves and recycled paper.

Life was not easy for Srikanth. He was rejected by his peers at his village school. After transferring to a school for special children, he did very well in his studies and also developed an interest in close and cricket. Although high school was hard for him, he eventually found a teacher who was kind enough to turn all his lessons into audio clips, and helped him with his exams .

Srikanth failed to enter his dream college ITTs(印度理工学院) because of the simple fact that he was blind –though he did very well in the entrance exam . But he managed to go to MIT, and graduated from the school in 2012. He returned to India soon after, and started his company with Swarnalatha, his special needs teacher in school and lifelong friend .
