The Amber Room

The history of the Amber Room dates back to(追溯到)the very

beginning of the 18th century, when Andreas Schluter, the chief

architect of the Prussian royal court, had the idea of using amber, a

material never before used for interior decoration(室内装修), to

complete one of the rooms of the Great Royal Palace in Berlin during the reconstruction under Frederick Ⅰ. The works started in 1701 and continued until 1713 with the help of the best German, Swedish, and Dutch amber masters, when the old king died, and the new Prussian King –Frederick Willelm Ⅰ—came into power(掌权).

In this part, you are required to listening to a short passage and read after the speaker.

The freezing sea brings danger as well as opportunity. Locked under a sheet of winter ice, these Beluga whales are trapped. It will be many weeks before the ice opens up and they can swim to clear water. For now, they are forced to share this tiny breathing space, surfacing to snatch air and battling to keep the ice away. This time the bear fails, but the Belugas will keep the scars of the hunters’ claws on their arching, streamlined backs. When I was 12 years old, one day I went with my dad to his workplace---a car showroom. I was wandering around and then I saw a poor woman with a little girl standing outside the showroom. I noticed that she was crying. I went inside and told my father about it. My father went to the woman and asked her to come in.

The woman said that her husband had died some months ago and that she didn’t have anyone in her family to help her. She did some work to earn some money to take care of her daughter, but her daughter was sick for the last three days. Now they didn’t have any food to eat. While she was telling the story, she was unable to control her emotions and started to cry again. My father and I were deeply moved by her story.

We got some food for her and her daughter to eat. My father then took them to the nearest hospital. On the way back, we bought her a 5kg bag of wheat from the market. My father gave her some money before we left.

My father’s kindness to this woman inspired me deeply and since then, I have decided to try and walk a similar path and serve others.

The Peales were a famous family of American artists. Charles Willson Peale is best remembered for his portraits(肖像) of leading figures of the American Revolution. He painted portraits of Franklin and Jefferson and over a dozen of George Washington. His life-size portrait of his sons Raphaelle and Titian was so realistic that George Washington reportedly once tipped his hat to the figures in the picture.

Charles Willson Peale gave up painting in his middle age and devoted his life to the Peale museum, which he founded in Philadelphia. The world’s first popular museum of art and natural science mainly covered paintings by Peale and his family as well as displays of animals in their natural settings. Peale found the animals himself and found a method to make the exhibits more lifelike. The museum’s most popular display was the skeleton (骷髅) of a huge, extinct elephant, which Peale unearthed on a New York farm in 1801.

Three of Peale’s seventeen children were also famous artists. Paphaelle Peale often painted still lives of flowers, fruit, and cheese. His brother Rembrandt studied under his father and painted portraits of many noted people, including one of George Washington. Another brother, Rubens Peale, painted mostly landscapes and portraits.

James Peale, the brother of Charles Willson Peale, specialized in miniatures (小画像). His daughter Sarah Miriam Peale was probably the first professional female portrait painter in America.
