Failure(失败) is a part of life. No matter what we do, there are always two results:success and failure. There is no doubt(怀疑) that every one of us wants to be successful, but we can’t always avoid failure.

People have different opinions about the failure. Some people regard failure as a bad thing. They hold that they should always do everything well. If they fail in something, they will lose their confidence. Other people

regard failure as a chance to learn. They redo(重做) what they failed to do. They know complaining won’t

help themselves.

As an old saying goes, “Failure is the mother of success.” As long as we keep to what is right and correct what is wrong in time, we will have success. In my opinion, failure is not bad, it’s not good, either.

W e use the Internet for many things: business, shopping, writing letters, talking to people, finding

information and so on. In recent years, a new kind of English has grown on the Internet. There's no real word for it yet, so we'll call it e-talk.

People don't like typing too much. To save time, they turn phrases into a few letters (called acronyms). Acronyms are often used in chat rooms(聊天室). Some of them are:

BTW (by the way) BRB (be right back)

LOL (laughing out loud) IMO (in my opinion)

People also use many abbreviations. They are shortened forms of words. Some common abbreviations are:

info (information) puter (computer)

pic (picture) sec (second)

W e usually don't see people when we communicate(交流)on the Net, so people have new ways to show

feelings. Most people use their keyboards to draw "feelings", such as:

:-) (happy) ;-) (joking) :-( (sad) :-O (surprised)

These days, many forums (论坛) have picture feelings. For example:

(happy) (sad) (angry) (cool)

There are even whole new words, like "newbies"(someone who is new on a chat board or forum). When you write something bad about someone else, it's called "flaming" the person.

It takes time for people to get used to(适应) e-talk. Also, different groups on the Net have their own

special ways of communicating. Newbies sometimes have to ask other people what they mean. As the Internet grows, e-talk will continue to grow and change.

1. Why are acronyms used on the Internet?

2. What does IMO mean on the Internet?

.

3. “BTW, my puter is not working well.” means that the person is sad that his computer is having problems.

The people in the USA and England both speak English of course. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between (1) _________ English and

_________ English.

First of all, they sound very different. Often, Ame ricans don’t say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno” instead of “I don’t know.” Or they may say “Whaddya say?” instead of “What did you say?” However, the British are more careful in their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate.

(2)Sound is not only the difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America. For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England people drive lorries.

Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone your frie nds, you “phone them up”. In America, you “give them a call”. When you are saying goodbye in England you might say “Cheerio!” In America you might say “See you later.”

There’re also some differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do” when they ask a question. They say “Do you have a storybook?” But the British often leave out the helping verb. They say “Have you a storybook?”

All these differences can be confusing (易混淆的) if you are learning English. But most languages are like

this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what has happened to English. It can also happen to other languages, such as French. Many people in

Canada speak French. (3)但是他们的法语和法国的法语不一样。

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容,按照事件发生的先后顺序排序(开始句和结尾句序号已给出)

When Julia Somberg eats her favorite food, she feels bad. She knows that chocolate can have a lot fat and sugar. But Julia says she loves chocolate so much---once she starts eating it, she can’t stop.

Julia isn’t the only one who loves chocolate. It is a favorite food for people all over the world. People prefer chocolate over ice cream, cake, and cookies.

The idea of eating chocolate didn’t begin until the 19th century. Before that, people drank chocolate. The habit began in Central American where the Aztecs drank bowls of chocolate to stay watchful. When the

liquid(液体) chocolate was brought to Spain in the 1500s, people thought it was medicine because it had a medicine taste. In fact, the people who made chocolate into drinks were doctors.

Then people discovered that mixing chocolate with sugar made a wonderful drink. King Ferdinand of Spain loved this drink so much that he put out an order: anyone who talked about chocolate outside the

court(法庭)would be killed. For about 100 years, chocolate was a secret in Spain.

Finally, people found out about chocolate, and it became a popular drink in Europe. Later, the Swiss mixed milk and chocolate. Today, most Americans prefer milk chocolate, while most Europeans prefer dark chocolate.

New research shows that chocolate is actually g ood for us. “Chocolate has different kinds of vitamins,” says a researcher in France. “It has more than 300 different chemicals. One chemical works on the part of the

brain(大脑) that feels pleasure. People who feel good when they eat chocolate are actually healthier. Feeling

pleasure is important for health and can protect against illness.” “Good chocolate doesn’t have much fat or sugar. You can enjoy it if you eat a little at a time!” says Tara Berish, another chocolate lover.

1._ _____Doctors made chocolate into drinks.

(1)The Aztecs drank chocolate to stay watchful.

2._______Chocolate was a secret in Spain for 100 years.

4._______Sugar was mixed with chocolate to make a sweet drink.

Here are the kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their homes:

“Would you like to come over for dinner this Saturday night?” “Hey,we’re having a party on Friday. Can you come?”

To reply to an invitation, either say thank you and accept,or say you’re sorry and give an excuse.“Thanks,I’d love to.What time would you like me to come?” or “Oh,sorry.I’ve tickets for a movie.”

Nearly every parent says that we never grow up. In fact, we are maybe 16 or 17 years old. In their eyes, we are always little ones and always do wrong things. For example, when I need to stay at home alone, they always worry about me and my life without them.

Most parents always think that they have offered the best things they can to make their children live in a comfortable world. They buy their children pretty clothes, cool shoes, expensive school things, and often a thousand-yuan-cost bike. They think that they have done everything that they can for their dear children. In return, they only want their children to get good results in the examinations.

But why their children still can’t understand them? Does it mean that they still want more material (物质的) things? No. As a matter of fact, what they want is a true family. What does a true family mean? I think it means a place where we can hide ourselves from the cold world outside. From here, we can get warmth, we can get consolation (安慰), and we can get happiness. And one important thing is that we should

be stronger and more confident in the outside world because we know that we have a family.

So I think that parents should sit down to talk with their children to let them know that they have a true family, so the children and their parents could understand each other more and more. Then, no children

The Internet has changed our habits, including our habit of sending greeting cards. There are many

e-card websites that make it so easy to find the right greeting cards. They have greatly changed the way we send greetings to each other.

Our lives have become so busy that we have limited personal time. These e-card websites have allowed everyone to easily share their feelings and emotions(感情) with the people they love. They contain(包括) plenty of greeting cards that can be used immediately. The users can choose any card they like, from festival greetings to birthday wishes. In fact, e-cards are perfect for any event. That’s why more and more people like to send e-cards. If the users are interested in making their own greeting cards on the internet, they can create a card within only a few minutes.

Another benefit(好处) of e-card websites is that they have made it possible for you to send top quality cards to your beloved (心爱的) ones and surprise them with cheerful greetings. They allow you to send your greetings on a specific(特定的) date. So you can plan for the occasion(场合)when you want to send the card. For example, you can send your e-card on a certain day and then visit the person with some flowers the next day. This will surely create a good impression(印象)on the person you love.

We have never forgotten the importance of saying sorry to our beloved ones. But sometimes we fail to do so because, we are not brave enough to face those we hurt. Some e- cards on these websites allow us to express our feelings in a more thoughtful way.

Although some people still would rather buy traditional cards in the shops for the persons they love, especially when they want the cards to last a long time, more and more people are choosing to send greetings on the Internet.

阅读下面短文,根据所给语境,按要求完成下列各题。

The first walk into outer space was taken by a Soviet astronaut. Astronaut Zhai Zhigang became the first Chinese to walk in space on September 27,2008. It showed that it was quite safe for a man to be outside the spaceship for a certain period of time. But to walk in space, astronauts have to meet with many kinds of difficulties and dangers.

The spaceship goes round the earth at an altitude (海拔高度) of about 200 kilometers above its surface.

At such altitudes there is no atmosphere which protects the life on the earth. The conditions of outer space are very harmful to man.

The boiling point of liquids (液体) goes down with pressure. But pressure outside the spaceship is nearly zero. In such conditions the decompression (减压) of the spacesuit may cause the boiling of the blood and

quick death. There is radiation from space and it is armful.

Breathing problems in space can be solved with the help of the spacesuit. Another problem is heat. Man gives off heat in the course (过程) of his activity, and the harder the labor (劳动) is, the greater the amount

(总量) of heat is. In space unless special measures are taken, the heat inside the spacesuit would make the conditions difficult.

For centuries across the world, moms have been homemakers while dads have been breadwinners (负担家计的人). However, a recent report shows a milestone (里程碑) change in the social roles of mothers and fathers. The new findings, from the US government’s Current Population Survey, show more women in the workplace and fewer stay-at-home mothers in the country. For the first time, American women have passed men in getting college degrees since more women than men went to college in the 1980s, according to the survey. Among adults aged 25 and older, 10.6 million US women have master’s degrees or higher, compared to 10.5 million men. When it comes to finishing college, about 20.1 million American women have bachelor’s degrees. The number for men is nearly 18.7 million. The gap of more than 1.4 million has remained steady in recent years. American women first passed men in bachelor’s degrees in 1996. Women’s educational achievements are giving them greater chances for a wider choice of jobs. This is contributing to a change in traditional gender roles at home and work. The new “Mr. Moms” include Todd Krater, 38, of Lakemoor, Illinois. He has been a stay-at-home dad for the past seven years to his three sons after his wife, who earned a master’s business degree, began to succeed in her career as a software expert. Krater said he found it difficult adjusting at first and got little support from other mothers at school events. In his blog, “A Man among Mommies”, Krater encourages other fathers to take a larger role in child care and says he now feels happy to see more dads at the park, library and school. “What was once an uncommon sight of a dad with the kids during the day is becoming more and more common,” said Krater. “But many still feel the pressure of gender roles and feel if they don’t make money they are somehow less of a man.” Jeremy Adam Smith, author of the 2009 book The Daddy Shift, believes that more stay-at-home dads will appear. “In the long term, the numbers of Mr. Moms are just going to keep going up,” Smith said. 1.
