The 17-year-old teenager has one leg.He was born that way,but his goal is to show it’s not the one thing that defines him.He would also be the first one to tell you that he just wants to prove to others and himself that he’s just like other normal ones.

When Calabria was young, his parents tried different prostheses(假肢) to find out which was most comfortable for their son as he tried to keep up with a family, who has a preference for sports.

At first, the Calabrias had their middle child in a prosthesis that looked and functioned like a “real” leg,but soon they decided to choose a different path when they found it wasn’t beneficial to his movement. Then the family moved him to a rm crutches(腋杖) and from there a new burst of energy was found.

Getting others to believe that he could take off on the soccer field took a little bit longer. When the Calabrias moved to Concord, they had a hard time convincing the town soccer program to allow a child like him to compete with able-bodied kids. After months and months of debates and meetings, the family received the answer they were looking for.Since

then, witnessing a young man on crutches who competes against those with two legs has become a fixed event in the Concord community.

A girl in Danville,Pennsylvania is recovering at home from a spinal(脊柱的)operation. But she isn’t missing any school.Instead, she is keeping up with her peers by using a remote-controlled robot.

The robot was invented by Double Robotics,of Seattle. It was bought by the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit and loaned to the middle school.Maddie Rarig,11,a sixth-grader,is now able, from her bed,to be in her math and English classes in real time. She can interact with her teachers, and—perhaps more importantly—her classmates.

Every day in the United States animals are beaten, neglected(忽视),or forced to struggle for survival.Left in deplorable conditions, they have little hope as they live out their days without the compassion(同情)they deserve. We must fight for these abused animals’ rights and severely punish heartless owner.

One of the first steps in protecting animals and creating effective cruelty laws is knowing what animal cruelty actually is.There are two categories:passive cruelty and active cruelty. The first means the abuse happens as a result of neglect or lack of action.Passive cruelty might seem less serious, but that is not the case;it can lead to terrible pain and suffering, and ultimately death.Examples include starvation, dehydration(脱水),inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions, and the failure to get medical care.

Active cruelty,on the other hand,is more well known and disturbing.Sometimes referred to as non-accidental injury, this type of abuse involves purposefully causing harm to an animal in order to feel more powerful or gain control.Active cruelty against animals should be taken very seriously, since it can be a sign that a person has serious psychological issues and may commit more acts of violence.

It is hard to tell just what drives people to harm innocent animals.According to a study, animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than others. It is vital to report people who hurt animals. While not all animal abusers become serial killers, it is important to treat every case seriously.

It’s not only up to the legal system to ensure that communities across the country are aware and educated about animal cruelty. There are plenty of things everyday citizens can do.The simplest action is for people to take care of their own pets and learn the facts so they can educate others on proper animal care.Another easy way to help is by donating to or volunteering at a local animal shelter.

In February 1915,an Australian gold-prospecting party found itself in trouble. The miners were in a particularly barren span of desert and they were out of water.Leaving 14-year-old Willie Hutchinson behind to tend camp, the men set out in search of water.Hours later, they returned empty-handed.Worse yet, young Willie was nowhere to be found.

One hundred million years earlier, water had been abundant here. The area the prospectors were standing on had been the floor of the Eromanga Sea.As the sea dried up,the rocks sat near the surface of a vast wetland. The acidic water leeched(吸取) silica and iron from the stones and worked its way deep into the crevices(裂缝)in the thick sandstone that lay beneath.Over millions of years,as the land above dried and weathered, the silica-water mixture hardened.

When young Willie Hutchinson finally made his way back to camp that night,he had located a source of drinkable wat er.He’d also found something more valuable:a handful of colorful rocks. It wasn’t exactly gold, but the party had discovered opal(蛋白石),the

colorful gem(宝石)formed from that mixture of silica and water. In fact,Hutchinson had located the largest repository(宝库)of the gem in the world.

Over the next several decades, prospectors flocked to the place, hoping to make a fortune mining for opal. They quickly realized that temperatures were much more pleasant underground,so they began digging homes into the hillsides.Today, much of the population—around 3,500 — live in these cave-like dwellings, known as “dugouts”.

Since opal can’t be mechanically detected or industrially mined,it’s ideal for independent miners who pick away at the rock by hand. All it takes is a permit and a small investment in the proper equipment.A miner simply drills and starts picking through the rock horizontally and harvesting by hand.

Today,Australia exports 95 percent of the world’s opal supply, and this region—Coober Pedy— produces more than half of that.Although many locals make their living as

miners, others treat it as a hobby. Some locals make a living off picking through the

piles, and tourists are welcome to pick through the piles as well. They might just have the luck of Willie Hutchinson.

33. What was the trouble with the gold-prospecting party?

A.They couldn’t detect any gold.

B.They were trapped in the desert.

C.They couldn’t find young Willie.

D.They lacked drinkable water.

34. It can be inferred from the text that Willie Hutchinson .

A.discovered opal by accident

B.knew the rocks were valuable

C.went out that day in search of gold

D.found his way back to the camp easily

35. What do we know about the opal miners?

A.They live underground.

B.They treat mining as a hobby.

C.Their living conditions are poor.

D.Their investment in mining is huge.

书面表达:

In 2013, on 11 November, the sales of T-mall reached 35 billion yuan, which equals the total sales of all the Wangfujing Department stores for a whole year. It shows that the way people buy and sell things is changing and online shopping is becoming increasingly popular. The reason why people are crazy about shopping online are as follows. For one thing, people can buy whatever they want at a much lower price online and all this can be done by just a click on the mouse. For another, it has become a trend for people to buy things on

this special day, so you may find yourself out if you don’t do the same.

In my opinion, while online shopping offers us a lower price and a wider variety, we should always buy things we really want and avoid wasting money.
