第一单元

Have you ever known anyone famous? If so, you may have found that they are remarkably(非常地) similar to the rest of(其他的) us. You may have even heard them object(反对) to people saying there is anything different about them. "I'm really just a normal(普通人) guy," protests(反对,抗议) an actor who has recently rocketed into the spotlight(公众注意的中心). There is, of course, usually a brief(短暂的) period while they are popular when they actually start to believe they are as great as their worshipping(崇拜) fans suggest. They start to wear fancy(漂亮的) clothes and talk as if(似乎) everyone should hear what they have to say. This period, however, does not often last long. They fall back(回到) to reality(现实)as fast as they had originally(最初) risen above it all. What will it feel like to soar(高飞) to such altitude(高度) and look down like an eagle(鹰) from up high on everyone else? And what will it feel like to have flown(fly的过去分词) so high only to wake from your dream and realize you are only human? Some only see the cruelty(残忍) in losing something they had gained(获得). They often make desperate(极度渴望)attempts(试图) to regain what they lost. Often these efforts (努力) result in(导致) even greater pain(痛苦). Some

become bankrupt(破产) financially(经济上) and emotionally (情感上). The only real winners are those who are happy to be back on the ground with the rest of us.

How do you spend your time when you're alone? Do you turn up your music as loud as you can and listen to your own entertainment(消遣)? Do you buy yourself the biggest steak (牛排) you could find and sit down to a good meal? It has been my observation(观察报告) that these activities can be the best type of therapy(治疗) for a troubled mind(困扰的心灵). It is crucial(重要的) for humans to find some solitude (孤独) in life. They must find some time to let the universe (宇宙) go spinning(旋转) on without others' interruption (干扰,中断). The portion(部分) of this world that belongs to one person is increasingly(渐增地) becoming smaller. And whatever we do have we must share(分享) with others. Therefore, our ability to(有什么的能力) maintain(维持) a healthy balance between social interaction(互动) and personal pursuits(追求) is being challenged(挑战). Inspiration(灵感) in solitude is a major(主要的)commodity(商品) not only for poets(诗人) and philosophers(哲学家) but for ordinary(普通) people

as well. A healthy adult needs "alone-time"; time to reflect (反思) on what is truly important to them. When you are alone, you can stretch(伸出) out your soul(灵魂) until it fills up the whole room, and use your freedom, moving at your own pace(速度). However, it's important to stay rational(保持理性). Don't forget that in order to be a healthy part of others' lives, you must yourself be healthy.

To look at me, you would never guess I am in my late sixties. Most people suspect(怀疑) that. I just smile and say, "A lady never reveals(暴露) her age." There are good reasons why a lady doesn't. Older women get ignored(忽略) in our society. We are undervalued(低估) and left to grow(成长)old without the company of others. I understood from a very young age our society discriminates(歧视) against the old. Our society is prejudiced(有偏见) against women. And, our society makes judgments(判断) based on the color of a person's skin(皮肤). I am an old black woman. I have to use my every advantage(优势) in order to remain a vital(至关重要的)part of my community(群体). I have managed to stay fit, to

maintain(维持) my looks while my wisdom(智慧) increases. Often younger men underestimate(低估) my abilities. However, I should tell you that I am very skilled(熟练的) in the art of politics(政治). I was for many years the mayor(市长)of a large urban(城市) center in the Southern United States. After that I was selected(挑选出来) by my district(行政区)to represent(代表) them in Congress. I advise(建议) other women over sixty not to give up! Old as we are, we have experience and know more about life. Let's not let our knowledge and experience go to waste.

第十单元

As a boss, I have dealt with(处理) all types of employees. The ones that are the least productive(富有成效的) are those who are not adaptive(适应). They may have high IQ points, but they just don't understand how to apply(应用) their theories to reality(现实中). I recently read a book by Daniel Goleman, which suggested that the true measure(测量) of intelligence(智力) was not IQ, but rather EQ or Emotional Intelligence(情商). This made a lot of sense(理解) to me.

I have never been at the top of my class, but I have always

been efficient(效率) and worked well with other people. I have always taken good communication skills my number one priority(优先考虑). I think only testing how well a person solves complicated(复杂的) academic(学术) problems fails to take into account(解释) other abilities, which can be just as crucial(重要的) and even more so to a person's accomplishments(成就). In fact, many of the "idea people" have a real hard time getting their point across. They simply don't have the skills to demonstrate(展示,证明) how valuable their idea might be. Sure, the world would be lost without these "idea people", but I'd rather hire(雇佣) someone with superior(优秀的) EQ. The higher a person's EQ is, the better they will be able to implement(实现,实施) the great ideas they have. The real trick(窍门) is finding someone who combines (结合) both.
