In The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way You Are (2020), Dr. Kevin Leman notes that 21 of the first 23 Americans in space were first-born males or only children. More than half of United States presidents have been first-borns or first-born boys. It’s a pretty significant finding historically, because families used to be bigger than they are today.

In addition to being high achievers, older children also generally have higher IQs than younger ones. Researchers have noted that the more kids a family has, the lower each child’s individual IQ tends to be. They give a few reasons for this.

Parents only have so much time, attention, and money. The more kids they have, the more these things are divided. First-born initially get the entire parental time. What’s more, the ration(配给量)of grown-ups to kids decreases with each new baby. So the younger ones are surrounded by more children’s language on average than the older kids.

Some researchers think parental attention is the key to personality birth-order differences. In his book Born to Rebel, psychologist Frank

Sulloway says competition for Mom and Dad’s attention is the thing that really shapes our personalities as part of our strategy to seek favor from Mom and Dad. Younger siblings (兄弟姐妹) tend to become rebels. Sulloway studied political activists and found that later-born activists were more radical than their first-born peers.

The conclusion of his book is that sibling competition for parental attention can affect society as a whole in times of revolution. Thomas Jefferson, Karl Marx, and Fidel Castro were all younger siblings, for example.

As compelling as this all is, it’s also something we should probably take with caution. There are other things that happen to us in life besides the addition of siblings to our families. A parent can die: a hurricane can leave us homeless; we can catch a life-threatening disease. Any one of these things will probably have more of an effect on our personalities than the presence of siblings.

A 2002 study bore this out. After interviewing 535 undergraduates, researchers concluded that personality differences related to birth order were “folklore”, although IQ and achievement differences were widely supported by research.

59. What is implied by “the younger ones are surrounded by more children’s

language on average than the older kids”?

A. Younger children need parental attention rather than siblings.

B. Younger children’s language mostly is taught by the older ones.

C. Younger children feel uncomfortable with more siblings.

D. Younger children have less chance to talk with their parents.

60. According to the passage, Frank Sulloway supports the idea that ______.

A. competition for parental attention is key to one’s personality

formation

B. people’s personalities are the critical factors affecting our society as a whole

C. the time parents spend with kids decreases with each new baby’s birth

D. later-born children are more likely to become the political activists

61. Frank Sulloway mentions Thomas Jefferson in his book in order to tell people that ______.

A. Thomas Jefferson is not the first-born child

B. not all the famous people are the first-born children

C. the idea that most of famous people are the first-born children is wrong

D. the later-born children are more radical than the first-born children C

Ours is a time when advances in science and technology have changed our understanding of the universe and our place within it. It is easy for some people to dismiss the discipline of philosophy as irrelevant. Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, for one, boldly announced that philosophy is dead at Google’s Zeitgeist Conference in 2020.

But Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, a US philosopher and novelist, doesn’t agree. In her new book Plato at the Goolgeplex: Why Philosophy Won’t Go Away, she argues that in philosophy, unlike in other areas of study, an ancient historical figure like Plato is just as relevant today.

Goldstein says that the growth in scientific knowledge presents new philosophical issues. For example, physics is blowing us away with the hypothesized multiverse — the idea that there exists more than one universe. According to Goldstein, the question of what the universe is and where we are in the universe is a scientific as well as philosophical one.

With the tremendous growth in cognitive science (认知科学) and neuroscience

(神经科学), scientists are exploring the idea of uploading our brains into the cloud. Are we discovering what our consciousness really is? Are we solving the problem of free will? These are pressing philosophical questions as well.

Even for those who are not philosophy students, philosophy is always a good thing to know, says Goldstein. Studying philosophy challenges your point of view. She goes on, “Also, you need to be a citizen in this world. You need to know your responsibilities. You’re going to have many moral choices every day of your life. And it enriches your inner life. You have lots of frameworks to apply to problems, and so many ways to interpret things. It makes life so much more interesting. It’s us at our most human. And it helps us increase our humanity. No matter what you do, that’s an asset.”

At a more practical level, knowledge and training in philosophy can also benefit your career. Critical and logical thinking translates well to a life outside of academia. Zachary Ernst, a software engineer at Narrative Science, a data analysis company, tells The Atlantic, “As a professional philosopher, if you haven’t gotten over-specialized and narrow, then you’ve got really good analytical and communication skills. So you’ve go t the ability to learn quickly and efficiently. You’re also in the habit of being very critical of all sorts of ideas and approaches to a variety of problems. Those skills are very rare in almost any workforce, and they’re extremely valuable.”

62. What doe s Goldstein’s new book mainly talk about?

A. The latest development of Plato’s theory in the scientific world.

B. The existence of more than one universe is a philosophical issue.

C. Scientists like Stephen Hawking need to learn some philosophy.

D. The significance of philosophy study at present times.

63. Which of the statements is included in the benefit of philosophy learning?

A. It helps people understand the daily morals.

B. It offers various problem-solving guidelines.

C. It stresses the challenges of being a human.

D. It contributes to the all-round development.

64. The words by Zarchary Ernst indicate that ______.

A. more science workers are getting trained in philosophy

B. philosophers are bound to succeed in the business world

C. lack of philosophy knowledge results in professional failure

D. mastery of philosophy wins you an edge in your field

65. The best title for this passage could be ______.

A. Philosophy Continues

B. Philosophy vs. Science

C. Plato and Philosophy

D. Philosophy and work

A growing body of research has shown that each of us has a “willpower budget” for everything we do. As this willpower budget drains, w e are more likely to give in to temptations. If you use all your willpower to keep on a diet, you may not have any left to stop you from other indulgences (放纵).

The brain’s store of willpower is used up when people control their thoughts, feelings or impulses, or when they work hard in pursuit of goals. US psychologist Roy Baumeister and others have found that people who successfully accomplish one task requiring self-control are less persistent on a second, seemingly unrelated task.

Activities that reduce willpower include resisting food or drink, keeping down emotional responses, taking exams and trying to impress someone. Task persistence is also reduced when people are stressed or lack of sleep. Some researchers have suggested that it is blood sugar that affects willpower. Brain cells use sugar as their main energy source and cannot do without it for even a few minutes. Most cognitive (认知的) functions are unaffected by minor blood sugar changes over the course of a day, but planning and self-control are sensitive to them. Applying self-control lowers blood sugar, which reduces the capacity for further self-control.

However we can increase our willpower through practice.

In the short term, you should spend your limited willpower budget wisely. Concentrating your effort on one or at most a few goals at a time increases the chance of success.

Focusing on success is important because willpower can grow in the long term. Like a muscle, willpower seems to become stronger with use. In military boot camps, new soldiers are trained to overcome one challenge after another to exercise and increase their willpower.

But you don’t need to go to a military camp to train your willpower; even something as simple as using your non-dominant hand to brush your teeth for two weeks can increase willpower capacity.

People who stick to an exercise program for two months report reducing their impulsive spending, junk food intake, alcohol use and smoking. They also study more, watch less television and do more housework
