How long will it be before you find yourself famous? 眼球经济时代,速成“明星”究竟能红多久 “IN the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” US artist Andy Warhol made this famous statement in 1968. Back then, the only really famous people were pop stars and actors, political figures and war heroes – although things were changing. In just 30 years, his statement seems to have come true. Today there are countless individuals that go in and out of the media spotlight. The most common way that ordinary people today become famous is through reality shows. Both American Idol and Hunan TV’s have produced quite a few instant stars. The most famous person of this type is Scottish singer Susan Boyle, an out-of-work, plain-looking 48-year-old who came to international attention when she appeared on the reality TV program Britain’s Got Talent in April 2009. However, Boyle’s success was largely due to a video posted on YouTube. According to the BBC, the video 庞大的) 120 million times worldwide” by the end of 2009. had been viewed “a whopping ( Indeed, today many people showcase their own videos on YouTube and other sites. “This model m Davis for the Associated Content. easy for an average Joe (路人) to get noticed,” writes Jonita But 15 minutes is a very short time; most of these instant celebrities fade from view. If others show true talent or staying power, they may be awarded extra time to prove themselves worthy of media and public attention. But while Warhol emphasized the short-lived nature of modern fame, he also pointed out that fame is easier to get nowadays. If digital video cameras enable people to become reporters, why shouldn’t they also become celebrities?

It is the first Starbucks cafe to boldly go where no Starbucks has gone before, onto potentially hostile French territory. Its advertising posters on the Champs Elysee announce "Starbucks - a passion pour le cafe". But is the company aware of the risk it is taking by challenging the very birthplace of cafe society "I think every time we come into a new market we do it with a great sense of respect, a great deal of interest in how that cafe society has developed over time," Bill O'Shea of Starbucks says. "We recognise there is a huge history here of cafe society and we have every confidence we can enjoy, augment and join in that passion." And he may be right. Despite some sniffiness in the French press, some younger French are expressing their excitement that they will finally be able to visit the kind of cafe they love to watch on the US TV series Friends. In fact, for some, it is an exotic rarity, far more exciting than the average French cafe. Melissa, aged 18, says she can hardly wait: "I love Starbucks caramel coffee - it's very good and I like the concept that they're opening in Paris. I think Starbucks will be OK for French people." An American tourist is equally excited when she spots the sign - this could be just the thing to help her get over the occasional twinge of homesickness. "I love the French cafes, but Starbucks is so popular in the States and it's become part of American culture and now it's come to France, and that's OK," she said.

Excuses Some people go through life standing at the excuse counter. People say they'd like to do this or that,but...then they offer all the excuses in the world why they can't do whatever it is.No matter what the excuses are,the only thing usually limiting them is their own self-perception. If I've learned anyhing,I've learned a person--any person--can do just about anything they set their mind to.The only thing they need is a willingness to work for what you want, patience to learn what you need to know, and just a little bit of belief in yourself, but you only need a seed.Your faith in yourself will grow with you as you move forward. If you self-perception is that you can't accompilsh somthing because you're not smart enough, then take the time to learn what you need to know and your self-perception will change. If your self-perception is that you can't accompilsh something because you never finsh anything you start, then go finsh something and change your self-perception. If your self-perception is that you're too lazy, too bust, too unworthy, too unfocused, too depressed, too dependent on others, the you're right. You are that because you believe that, but you can change that! Life is change, and the past doesn't equal the future.Your today is the result of your past beliefs and actions.Change your beliefs and action and you change your future. If you think you can or you can't,you're right. You are what you think. Think about that the next time you need an excuse.

Passage1. Knowledge and Virtue Knowledge is one thing, virtue is another; good sense is not conscience, refinement is not humility, nor is largeness and justness of view faith. Philosophy, however enlightened, however profound, gives no command over the passions, no influential motives, no vivifying principles. Liberal Education makes not the Christian, not the Catholic, but the gentleman. It is well to be a gentleman, it is well to have a cultivated intellect, a delicate taste, a candid, equitable, dispassionate mind, a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life—these are the connatural qualities of a large knowledge;they are the objects of a University.I am advocating, I shall illustrate and insist upon them;but still, I repeat, they are no guarantee for sanctity or even for conscientiousness, and they may attach to the man of the world, to the profligate,to the heartless, pleasant, alas, and attractive as he shows when decked out in them.Taken by themselves, they do but seem to be what they are not;they look like virtue at a distance, but they are detected by close observers, and in the long run;and hence it is that they are popularly accused of pretense and hypocrisy, not, I repeat, from

Some time ago, Sofan and I were visiting some friends in the country. We were staying in a beautiful little guest cabin, surrounded by fruit trees, flowers and even a few goats. Painted above the doorway in brightly colored, flowing letters were the words:Your mind is a garden.Your thoughts are the seeds. You can grow flowers or.You can grow weeds. Little did we know it at the time, but this little poem was to have a pound both on our thought patterns aswell as our artworks. It started almost as a kind of game. The road to success It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their business lives sweeping out of the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of business education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself. Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly start ed, my advice to you is “aim high”. I would not give a fig for the young man who does not already see himself the partner or the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or foreman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “my place is at the top”. Be king in your dreams. And there is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on the line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it. The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here, there, and everywhere. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry too many baskets that break most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration. To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the

The Power of Beauty One of the most successful, influential and beloved women in American history, Eleanor Roosevelt once said that she had one regret: she wished she had been prettier. Who hasn’t felt the same way? We are all too aware of our physical imperfections. To overcome them, we spend billions upon billions of dollars every year on cosmetics, diet products, fashion, and plastic surgery. Why do we care so much about how we look? Because it matters. Because beauty is powerful. Because even when we learn to value people mostly for being kind and wise and funny, we are still moved by beauty. No matter how much we argue against it or pretend to be immune, beauty exerts its power over us. There is simply no escape. Aristotle said, “Beauty is a greater recommendation than any letter of introduction.” It’s not fair, but it’s true. We simply treat beautiful people better than we do others. Attach a photograph of a beautiful author to an essay, and people will think that is more creative and more intelligently written than exactly the same essay accompanied by the photo of a homely author. Our sensitivity to physical beauty is not something we can control at will. We are born with it. Experiments conducted by psychologist Judith J. Langlois showed that even small infants prefer to look at attractive faces. Before they have met a single supermodel, before they have watched a single TV show, before they have opened up a single fashion magazine, they are drawn to the same faces which adults have judged to be attractive. There are more important things in life than beauty. But as Etcoff says, “We have to understand beauty, or we will always be enslaved by it.” If you aim to be wise and kind and funny, it doesn’t mean that you can’t also try your best to look beautiful. There’s no reason to feel guilty about being moved by beauty’s power. It moves us all.
