Psychiatric(治疗精神病的)tests show that a well-balanced person gets much angrier when offended(make sb angry)than an abnormal(不正常的)person does . At the New York State Psychiatric Institute , Dr. James Page and Professor of Psychology Carney Landis of Columbia University studied the reaction of 200 normal persons and 210 abnormal persons . They tested their reactions to annoying situations of every type and variety such as : being laughed at , being repeatedly disconnected on the telephone , accidentally hitting their thumb with a hammer , being worked on by a backseat driver , being told to “ shut up ” and mind their own business , discovering someone cheating in a friendly card game , etc . In almost every instance the anger reaction of the normal group was much more intense than that of the abnormal one .

“ This , ” they reported , “ is agreeing with other psychiatric findings . For one of the outstanding symptoms(症状)of mental unbalance is lack of emotion . ” So if you blow your top when you hit your head against a piece of furniture , or when your girlfriend goes out with another young man—don’t worry about it . It’s just a sign that you’re normal .

In many countries in the process of industrialization , overcrowded cities present a major problem . Poor conditions in these cities , such as lack

of housing , inadequate sanitation(卫生)and lack of employment , bring about an increase in poverty , disease and crime .

The over-population of towns is mainly caused by the drift of large numbers of people from the rural areas . These people have become dissatisfied with the traditional life of farming , and have come to the towns hoping for better work and pay .

One possible solution to the problem would be to impose registration (登记)on town residents(居民). Only officially registered residents would be allowed to live in the towns and the urban population would thus be limited . In practice , however , registration would be very difficult to enforce ; it would cause a great deal of resentment(不满), which would ultimately lead to violence(暴力).

The only long-term solution is to make life in the rural areas more attractive , which would encourage people to stay there . This could be achieved by providing encouragement for people to go and work in the villages . Facilities in the rural areas , such as transport , health and education services should be improved . Education should include training in improved methods of farming and other rural industries , so as to develop a more positive attitude towards rural life . The improvement of life in the villages is very important , because the towns themselves cannot be developed without the simultaneous or previous development of the rural area .

44. What does the word “ urban ”( Line 3 , Para. 3)mean ?

A. Of the city .

B. Out of work .

C. In a bad condition .

D. Of enormous size .

45. In the author’s view , solving the cities’ problem of overcrowding by strict registrations is

.

A. practical

B. possible

C. not realistic

D. not sufficient

46. According to the writer , the problem with crowded cities will be solved if .

A. traditional methods of farming are well kept

B. conditions in rural areas are much improved

C. the government can provide more jobs

D. violence could be controlled in cities

47. Which factor is most important for people to be attracted to live in the country ?

A. Their expectation .

B. Their interests .

C. Their

income .

D. Their attitude .

How men first learnt to invent words is unknown , in other words . The origin of language is a mystery . All we really know is that men , unlike animals , somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings , actions and things , so that they could communicate with each other ; and that later they agreed upon certain signs , called letters , which could be combined to represent those sounds , and which could be written down . Those sounds , whether spoken or written in letters , we call words .

The power of words , then , lies in their associations-the things they bring up before our minds . Words become filled with meaning for us by experience ; and the longer we live , the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past ; and the more we read and learn , the more the number of words that mean something to us increases .

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions . This charming use of words is what we call literary style . Above all , the real poet is a master of words . He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music , and which by their position and association can move men to tears . We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately , or they will make our speech silly and dull .

48. The origin of language is .

A. a legend(传说)handed down from the past

B. a matter that is hidden secretly

C. a question difficult to answer

D. a problem not yet solved

49. One of the reasons why men invented certain sounds to express thoughts and actions was that .

A. they could agree upon certain signs

B. they could write them down

C. they could communicate with each other

D. they could combine them

50. What is true about the words ?

A. They are used to express feelings only .

B. They can not be written down .

C. They are simply sounds .

D. They are mysterious .

51. Which of the following statements about the real poet is NOT true ?

A. He is no more a master of words than an ordinary person .

B. He can convey his ideas in words which sing like music .

C. He can move men to tears .

D. His style is always charming .

About six years ago I was eating lunch in a restaurant in New York City when a woman and a young boy sat down at the next table , I couldn’t help overhearing parts of their conversation . At one point the woman asked : “ So , how have you been ? ” And the boy—who could not have been more than seven or eight years old—replied . “ Frankly , I’ve been feeling a little depressed lately . ”

This incident stuck in my mind because it confirmed(证实)my growing belief that children are changing . As far as I can remember , my friends and I didn’t find out we were “ depressed ” until we were in high school .

The evidence of a change in children has increased steadily in recent years . Children don’t seem childlike anymore . Children speak more like adults , dress more like adults and behave more like adults than they used to .

Whether this is good or bad is difficult to say , but it certainly is different . Childhood as it once was no longer exists . Why ?

Human development is based not only on innate(天生的)biological states , but also on patterns of access to social knowledge . Movement from one social role to another usually involves learning the secrets of the new status . Children have always been taught adult secrets , but slowly and in stages : traditionally , we tell sixth graders things we keep hidden from fifth graders .

In the last 30 years . However , a secret-revelation(揭示)machine has been fixed in 98 percent of American homes . It is called television . Television passes information , and indiscriminately(不加区分地), to all viewers alike , be they children or adults . Unable to resist the temptation , many children turn their attention from printed texts to the less challenging , more vivid moving pictures .

Communication through print , as a matter of fact , allows for a great deal of control over the social information to which children have access . Reading and writing involve a complex(复杂)code of symbols that must be memorized and practiced . Children must read simple books before they can read complex materials .

52. According to the author , feeling depressed is .

A. a sure sign of a psychological problem in a child

B. something hardly to be expected in a young child

C. an inevitable phase of children’s mental development

D. a mental-state present in all humans , including children

53. Traditionally , a child is supposed to learn about the adult world .

A. through contact with society

B. gradually and under guidance

C. naturally and by biological instinct

D. through exposure to social information

54. The phenomenon that today’s children seem adult like is attributed by the author to .

A. the widespread influence of television

B. the poor arrangement of teaching content

C. the fast pace of human intellectual development

D. the constantly rising standard of living

55. Why is the author in favor of communication through print for children ?

A. It enables children to gain more social information .

B. It develops children’s interest in reading and writing .

C. It helps children to memorize and practice more .

D. It can control what children are to learn .

As a high school coach, I did all I could to help my boys win their games. I ___1___ as hard for victory as they did. A dramatic incident, however, following a game in which I officiated as a referee, ___2___ my perspective on victories and defeats. I was refereeing a league championship basketball game in New Rochelle, New York, between New Rochelle and Yonkers High. New Rochelle was coached by Dan O'Brien, Yonkers by Les Beck. The gym was crowded to capacity, and the volume of noise made it impossible to hear. The game was well played and closely contested. Yonkers was leading by one point as I glanced at the clock and ___3___ there were but 30 seconds left to play. Yonkers, in possession of the ball, passed off —shot —missed. New Rochelle recovered —pushed the ball up court —shot. The ball rolled tantalizingly around the rim and off. The fans shrieked. New Rochelle, the home team, ___4___ the ball, and tapped it in for what looked like victory. The tumult was deafening. I glanced at the clock and saw that the game was over. I hadn't heard the final buzzer because of the noise. I ___5___ with the other official, but he could not help me. Still seeking help in this bedlam, I ___6___ the timekeeper, a young man of 17 or so. He said, "Mr. Covino, the buzzer went off as the ball rolled off the rim, before the final tap-in was made." I was in the unenviable position of having to tell Coach O'Brien the sad news. "Dan," I said, "time ran out before the final basket was ___7___ in. Yonkers won the game." His face clouded over. The young timekeeper came up. He said, "I'm sorry, Dad. The time ran out before the final basket." Suddenly, like the sun coming out from ___8___ a cloud, Coach O'Brien's face lit up. He said, "That's okay, Joe. You did what you had to do. I'm proud of you." Turning to me, he said, "Al, I want you to meet my son, Joe." The two of them then walked off the court together, the coach's arm ___9___ his son's shoulder. B In Britain, the old Road Traffic Act restricted speeds to 2 m.p.h. (miles per hour) in towns and 4 m.p.h. in the country. Later Parliament increased the speed limit to 14 m.p.h. But by 1903 the development of the car industry had made it necessary to raise the limit to 20 m.p.h. By 1930, however, the law was so widely ignored that speeding restrictions were done away with altogether. For five years motorists were free to drive at whatever speeds they likes. Then in 1935 the Road Traffic Act imposed a 30 m.p.h. speed limit in built-up areas, along with the introduction of driving tests and pedestrian crossing. Speeding is now the most common motoring offence in Britain. Offences for speeding fall into three classes: exceeding the limit on a restricted road, exceeding on any road the limit for the vehicle you are driving, and exceeding the 70 m.p.h. limit on any road. A restricted road is one where the street lamps are 200 yards apart, or more. The main controversy (争论) surrounding speeding laws is the extent of their safety value. The Ministry of Transport maintains that speed limits reduce accidents. It claims that when the 30 m.p.h. limit was introduced in 1935 there was a fall of 15 percent in fatal accidents. Likewise, when the 40 m.p.h. speed limit was imposed on a number of roads in London in the late fifties, there was a 28 percent reduction in serious accidents. There were also fewer casualties (伤亡) in the year after the 70 m.p.h. motorway limit was imposed in 1966. In America, however, it is thought that the reduced accident figures are due rather to the increase in traffic density. This is why it has even been suggested that the present speed limits should be done away with completely, or that a guide should be given to inexperienced drivers and the speed limits made advisory, as is done in parts of the USA. ( no more than ten words) 1. What measures were adopted in 1935 in addition to the speeding restrictions? Driving tests and pedestrian crossings 2. Speeding is a motoring offence a driver commits when he _drive too fast/exceeds the speed limits____. 3. What is the opinion of British authorities concerning speeding laws? Speed limits reduce accidents. 4. What reason do Americans give for the reduction in traffic accidents? The increase in traffic density.
