Muzak

The next time you go into a bank, a store, or a supermarket, stop and listen. What do you hear? 71 It’s similar to the music you listen to, but it’s not exactly the same. That’s because this music was especially designed to relax you, or to give you extra energy. Sometimes you don’t even realize the music is playing, but you react to the music anyway.

Quiet background music used to be called ―elevator (电梯) music‖ because we often heard it in elevators. But lately we hear it in mor e and more places, and it has an new name ―Muzak‖. About one-third of the people in America listen to ―Muzak‖ every day. The music plays for 15 minutes at a time, with short pauses in between. It is always more lively between ten and eleven in the morning, and between three and four in the afternoon, when people are tired. 72 If you listen to Muzak carefully, you will probably recognize the names of many of the songs. Some musicians or songwriters don’t want their songs to be used as Muzak, but othe rs are happy when their songs are chosen. Why? 73

Music is often played in public places because it is designed to make people feel less lonely when they are in an airport or a hotel. It has been proven that Muzak does what it is designed to do. Tired office workers suddenly have more energy when they hear the pleasant sound of Muzak in the background. 74 Supermarket shoppers buy 38 percent more groceries.

75 They say it’s boring to hear the same songs all the time. But other people enjoy hearing Muzak in public places. They say it helps them relax and feel calm. One way or another, Muzak affects everyone. Some farmers even say their cows give more milk when they hear Muzak!

A.Some people don’t like Muzak.

B.The music gives them extra energy.

C.Music is playing in the background.

D.Factory workers produce 13 percent more.

E.Muzak tends to help people understand music better.

F.They get as much as $4 million a year if their songs are used.

G.Muzak is played in most of the big supermarkets in the world.

Public Speaking and Critical Thinking

What is critical thinking? To a certain degree, it’s a matter of logic(逻辑)—of being able to spot weaknesses in other people’s arguments and to avoid them in your own. It also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence.

In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organized thinking—the ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas. 71 The greatest thinkers, scientists, and inventors have often taken information that was readily available put it together differently to produce new ideas. That, too, is critical thinking.

72 As the class goes on, for example, you will probably spend a good deal of time organizing your speeches. While this may seem like a purely mechanical(机械的) exercise, it is

closely connected with critical thinking. If the structure of your speech is loose and confused, chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused. If, on the other hand, the structure is clear, there is a good chance your thinking is too. Organizing a speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have. 73

What is true of organization is true of many aspects of public speaking. 74 As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately. 75 As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class, you will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations.

If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece.

A. Rather, it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves.

B. This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it.

C. It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech.

D. It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganized ideas.

E. If you are wondering what this has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot.

F. The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways.

G. As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking, you will see how they can be used in other forms of communication as well.

Empathy

Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. __71__ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.

Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation. Turn on the TV, and you’re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. __72__

There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples. Humans are socially related by nature. __73__ Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect. Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.

Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact, Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers. __74__ ―Academics are important. But if you don’t have emotional (情感的) intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,‖ she says.

What’s the best way to up your EQ (情商)? For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. __75__

To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nurs ing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a ―sharing circle‖ with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter.

A.Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person.

B.That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the

researchers said.

C.―One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,‖ Freed

says.

D.Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.

E.Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they think and

how they feel.

F.Good social skills—including empathy—are a kind of ―emotional intelligence‖ that will help

you succeed in many areas of life.

G.Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human—and having

empathy is decisive to those relationships.

Urbanization

Until relatively recently, the vast majority of human beings lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5,500 years ago. ____71____. In fact, nearly everyone lived on farms or in tiny rural (乡村的) villages. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history--- a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living.

Britain was only the beginning. ____72____.The process of urbanization--- the migration (迁移) of people from the countryside to the city--- was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live.

In 1990, fewer than 40% of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82% of Americans live in cities. Only about 2% live on farms. ____73____. Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies. It took about ninety-five people on farms to feed five people in cities. ____74____. Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite(精英) and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city.

Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country. ____75____. Today, instead of needing ninety-five farmers to feed five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred non-farmers.

A. That kept cities very small.

B. The rest live in small towns.

C. The effects of urban living on people should be considered.

D. Soon many other industrial nations become urban societies.

E. But even 200 years ago, only a few people could live in cities.

F. Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive.

G. Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings.

Early Childhood Education

Early childhood education is the formal (正规的) teaching and care of young children. It primarily focuses on learning through playing to encourage the child’s different kinds of development. 71

Studies with Head Start programs throughout the United States have shown some evidence that there are quite a few advantages to early childhood education, which can produce significant gains in children’s learning and development. Compared to a child who does not attend pre-school, children completing their early education programs are found to be better at math and reading skills. They are excited to learn and have the tools to do so. 72 These children are more competent in their pre-school, kindergarten and school-age years, and they are usually reported as ―friendlier‖ by parents and the children’s peers (同伴).

73 In studies with matched control groups, more students who had early schooling experiences were employed at the age of 19, fewer were on welfare, and fewer were involved with the criminal activity. What’s more, some studies show that children attending pre-school are more likely to graduate and have higher education, and be well integrated (综合) as an adu lt.

Early childhood education gives most children a jump-start on education for their kindergarten and primary school years. It is clear that early childhood education can have some great benefits for children. 74 If early childhood education is less effective, perhaps the best model is finding strategies for allowing a parent to stay home with his or her child for at least the first two to three years. Also important is considering a child’s own personality. 75

A. The long-term influence of early education is significant as well.

B. They can benefit greatly from encouragement in their early childhood.

C. Yet its quality must be assessed to see what kind of benefits it actually provides.

D. They are also able to relate to others in a superior way and that improves their social skills.

E. Many experts of education have concerned about what early childhood education means today.

F. Individual differences in children mean that not all children will get equal benefits from early childhood education.[来源:学§科§网]

G. It consists of activities that serve children in the pre-school years and is designed to improve later school performance.

Do It Yourself

―Do it yourself (DIY)‖ is a term used to describe building or repairing of something without the aid of experts. It came into common usage in the 1950s in reference to home improvement projects which people might choose to complete independently. 71 It promotes the ability of the ordinary person to learn to do more than what he thinks is possible.

From the late 20th century, we have given in to the convenience of being told the ―right way‖ to do things because it is convenient. 72 We have organized shopping, organized

entertainment, and even organized marriage. With the development of industrial revolution, we have had our clothes and furniture made with the help of the machine. Our food supply has left our backyards and ventured (冒险) into the factory. Things get cheaper and easier to find, but we buy as one and eat as one.

DIY culture holds a powerful belief: 73 That statement may seem like the DIY movement is quite self-centered, but there is great evidence that the opposite is true. By creating with our own minds and hands, by relying on what has come before and projecting what will be, we have become open to many possibilities. 74

People can both create to serve their own needs and find the value in what others create. In other words, we can both learn how to make what we desire ourselves and consume goods made by others. 75 But the joy of DIY culture is how we begin to find our interconnectedness, for example, our talents of swimming and skating with the talents of others in our community.

A. Almost everything in our life has been arranged in a system.

B. DIY provides us with some particular requirements and tools.

C. People can have what they want if they can learn to make it themselves.

D. We question the lifestyle based on our values and fashioned with our hands.

E. Of course the danger of DIY culture is that we try to become entirely self-confident.

F. In recent years, DIY has taken on a broader meaning that covers a wide range of skill sets.

G. We can sew our own clothes, grow vegetables, and do other activities that put us in touch with the processes of life.

The War Against Sand

Imagine living on the edge of a vast desert, which is moving quietly closer to your village every day and covering your fields. The desert is on the move. This is called desertification.

Desertification occurs in regions close to an already existing desert. 71 The first is over-use of water in the area. There is not enough water in any case, and if it is not carefully used, disaster can follow. As time goes on, water shortages make farming more and more difficult. In some places, locals can remember local lakes and marshes which were once the homes for all kinds of fish and birds. 72 Farmers leave the land, and fields are replaced by deserts.

The second cause is misuse or over-use of the land. 73 Ploughing(耕) large fields and removing bushes and trees means that the wind will blow away the soil. Once the soil is lost, it is hard to replace, and if there is rain, it has nowhere to go, and brings no benefit.

74 Every spring, the skies over some of eastern cities, thousands of kilometers away from the deserts, can be darkened by sandstorms. Dust from deserts can have a great effect on weather systems. While desertification is perhaps being partly caused by global warming, these sandstorms can make global warming worse by adding to what is known as the greenhouse effect.

What can be done to slow down or stop the process of desertification? A great deal of work is already under way. Obviously first steps are to find new water sources. 75 Some types of grass also hold the soil together, and stop the wind taking it. Without these efforts, it will be

harder and harder to stop the world’s deserts in their tracks, and more and more farmers will give up and head for cities. The lesson to be learnt lies beneath the sand.

A. It generally arises from two related causes.

B. It is not only the farmers and villagers who suffer.

C. They have been completely buried by the sand now.

D. Scientists are doing the research on the cause of desertification.

E. They destroy the land, as the soil dries out and is then blown away.

F. Tree planting can help, by providing barriers between desert and rich field.

G. This means that the wrong crops are planted, and need more water than is available.

A study showed eating even a little less salt could greatly help the heart. The study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The scientists used a computer model to predict how just three grams less salt a day would affect heart disease in the United States.

The scientists said the results would be thirteen percent fewer heart attacks, eight percent fewer strokes(中风), four percent fewer deaths and eleven percent fewer new cases of heart disease. ___71__

Researchers said it could prevent one hundred thousand heart attacks and ninety-two thousand deaths every year. The researchers were from the University of California, San Francisco, Stanford University and Columbia University. They and public health professionals in the United States are interested in a national campaign to persuade people to eat less salt. ___72___.

However, some scientists say such a campaign is an experiment with the health of millions of people.

Michael Alderman is among the critics(批评家). He is a high blood pressure expert and professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Doctor Alderman says that eating less salt results in lower blood pressure. ___73___. And he says salt has other biological effects. He says calling for reductions in the national diet could have good effects, but it could also have harmful results.

Another critic is David McCarron, a nutrition and kidney(肾)disease expert at the University of California. He and his team looked at large studies of diets in thirty-three countries. ___74___. Most of them eat more salt than American health officials advise.

Doctor McCarron says the worldwide similarity suggests that a person’s brain might decide how much salt to eat.

Both Doctor McCarron and Doctor Alderman have connections to the Salt Institute, a trade group for the salt industry. Doctor Alderman is a member of an advisory committee. ___75__ Doctor McCarron is paid for offering scientific advice to the Salt Institute.

A. But he says he receives no money from the group.

B. Such campaigns are already in place in Britain, Japan and Finland.

C. And two hundred forty billion dollars would be saved in health care.

D. They say people eating less salt have equal chances to have diseases.

E. And it may also result in fifteen percent increase of the kidney death rate.

F. They found that most people around the world eat about the same amount of salt.

G. But he says studies have not clearly shown that lowering salt means fewer heart attacks or strokes.

If you have ever been in a school play or even made believe you were a doctor, detective, or a space traveler, you know the enjoyment that acting brings. Almost all of us have the wish to play the part of someone—or something—else. 71

In the ancient world, acting was often associated with religious ceremonies and other special occasions. As far back as 2200 B.C. trained Chinese actors performed ceremonial dances in costume and makeup at harvest festivals. 72 To the dance was gradually added pantomime—the imitation of movements and gestures—as well as the wearing of masks, the singing of chants, and finally the use of dialogue.

While acting was coming into its own in the ancient Chinese classical theatre, it was doing the same in the western world, in Greece. From about 500 B.C. on, acting became a highly specialized art in Greece. Greek actors, however, still wore masks, and their motions were largely fixed by custom. 73

Modern acting, by contrast, gives the individual actor great opportunity to develop his or her personal talents for serious, comic, or musical drama. The names, faces, and styles of famous movie actors are known worldwide. 74 A special form of acting takes place in radio drama, which was highly popular before television. In radio drama the actors face an unique challenge. They are unseen by their audience. So they must rely on voice alone to make their characters real to the listeners.

75 Only forty percent of Broadway actors are employed, most of them for only part of the year. Those who become stars need not only talent, but determination. They must not be easily discouraged. Otherwise, they might give up before the opportunity for stardom presents itself.

A. The origins of acting are in the act of remembering.

B. Drama in Greece began with festivals honoring Dionysus.

C. It is believed that this was the first step in the development of acting.

D. Historical records indicate that this desire is as old as civilization itself.

E. Acting is not, as many people think, a quick, easy road to fame and riches.

F. Broadway and television provide other stages on which actors can display their talent.

G. Consequently, they had little opportunity to demonstrate their individual personalities.

―Look it up in the dictionary‖ is the usual comment when people are in doubt about the meaning or spelling of a word. Dictionaries are considered the final authority on these matters as well as on pronunciations and other facts about a word.

Until a f ew hundred years ago, however, people could not ―look it up‖ because there were no English dictionaries. The ancient Greeks and Romans and the scholars of the Middle Ages had

made lists of Latin and Greek words. 71 The first great English dictionary listing both common and uncommon words was written by Samuel Johnson in 1755.

In America, the most famous name in dictionary writing is that of Noah Webster. He stressed American rather than British ways of speaking. His great dictionary, which first appeared in 1828, has been republished many times. 72 The latest edition is still considered ―the‖ dictionary. It defines over 450,000 words, including radar, television and many others undreamed of by Webster.

73 The huge ones that rest on stands in libraries are called unabridged, meaning ―not shortened.‖ They tell not only a word’s meaning and spelling but also its pronunciation, origin, history, part of speech, grammatical forms, and ways of use. The smaller ones do not provide all this information.

74 A bilingual dictionary, such as a Spanish-English dictionary, translates words from one language into another. A thesaurus lists other words that mean the same as each listed word. A gazetteer lists place names, and a glossary is a small dictionary in a book defining technical words in that book. There are also dictionaries of scientific terms and ones on many other topics. There is even a dictionary of slang. 75 The dictionary is one of our most valuable language tools.

A. Each time, it has been updated.

B. General dictionaries are not the only kind.

C. Thus there are many kinds of special dictionaries.

D. In a general dictionary, each word may have multiple meanings.

E. Dictionaries that list all kinds of words are known as general dictionaries.

F. Over the previous 150 years more than 20 dictionaries had been published.

G. But it was not until 1604 that a book of uncommon English words appeared.

Claustrophobia

Claustrophobia, or fear of enclosed spaces, is one of the most common fears.Claustrophobia can be deep fear or even panic as a result of being in a small space.

Claustrophobia can develop after a troubling childhood experience (such as being trapped in a small space during a childhood game), or from another unpleasant experience later on in life related to small spaces (such as being stuck in a lift)._71 This response then becomes programmed in the brain, making an association between being in a tight space and feeling anxious or out-of-control.As a result, the person often develops claustrophobia.According to Mark Powers, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology at Southern Methodist University," Claustrophobia is a specific fear and not a type of panic disorder. The primary specific danger forecasts for claustrophobia are that either the person will be trapped or run out of air."

72 Claustrophobia symptoms can include: sweating, accelerated heartbeat, upset stomach,

passing out, light-headedness, shaking, breathing problem, etc.

Some common situations can cause anxiety in claustrophobia sufferers. The claustrophobia sufferer will look for an exit when inside a room, avoid driving on the highway or major roads where there is heavy traffic when inside a car, avoid taking lifts when inside a building, or stand near a door when at a party.73

Claustrophobia can have harmful social and psychological effects, since the patient will often avoid situations in which she thinks she will have an anxiety attack, leading to hiding and sadness.

74 According to Dr.Powers, " Exposure treatment, a form of mind-behavioral treatment, usually results in a total reduction in anxiety symptoms if conducted properly."

Flooding is a type of exposure treatment in which the person is exposed to a situation until the anxiety attack passes; a less extreme form of exposure treatment is counter-conditioning.Counter conditioning includes behavior treatment, as the person is taught visualization and relaxation techniques before being slowly reintroduced to the cause situation.

75 Medications to help treat claustrophobia include things which help to ease the heart pounding often associated with anxiety attacks.

A.The good news is that claustrophobia is very treatable.

B.The past experience can trace back to the moment of birth.

C.According to some doctors, claustrophobia is worse than the fear of heights.

D.When a person experiences such an event, it can often cause a frightening panic attack.E.In extreme cases, the very sight of a closed door can lead to feelings of anxiety in a person.

F.Treatment for claustrophobia can also include medication or a combination of several treatments.

G.When a person with claustrophobia finds herself in a restricted space, her body responds in certain ways.

Planking: a brief history

The rules are simple: you must lie face down, palms(手掌) flat against your sides, with your feet together and pointing at the ground. Points are awarded for an original location and for the number of onlookers and participants involved. ______71______ Without a photo, you're just a person lying down. This is planking, described variously as a global participatory art project, a "meaningless internet craze".

It began 14 years ago with a pair of bored kids. Gary Clarkson, then 15, and his friend Christian Langdon, 12, would perform the plank in public places, amusing one another and puzzling onlookers. _____72______ The game was a pointless way for the boys to pass the time. As Clarkson puts it: "It was just a really stupid, random thing to do."

For its first 10 years planking spread very slowly, from Clarkson and Langdon to their friends at school and, after a while, on to other kids from the neighborhood. ______73______ Soon, they had a few thousand followers. Photographs of plankers came in from all over the world: American plankers on top of their televisions, British plankers in trees, and Europeans on country roads and steep riverbanks.

Then things got really interesting. A few days later, a mass gathering of plankers attracted more than 100 people. The planking in the photos posted to Facebook became riskier and stranger. One brave airport worker performed the plank in the engine fan of a jet plane.

______74______ Some people have linked the practice to the 1995 video for the Radiohead song, ―Just‖. In the video, a man lies down on a busy London road and a crowd of strangers gather to try to understand and help him. He refuses to move, or to tell them why he's lying there. He tells them – but not us, the viewers – and all we see is that now the entire crowd is lying down on the pavement as well. _____75______ "People generally think you're mad," as creator Gary Clarkson puts it. "That's sort of the point."

A. You must, of course, have somebody take a photo.

B. Many people believe planking is a good way to pass the time.

C. At that time, it was known simply as the Lying Down Game.

D. We can read about planking all of the time on internet websites.

E. Whether the video is the inspiration or not, it helps us understand the spirit of planking.

F. Then, in 2007, when the pair created a Facebook group for their game, the pace accelerated.

G. It's not clear – and Clarkson and Langdon don't remember – where exactly the idea for planking came from.

Our Fears Can Change the Reality of the Situation

At times, our worries and anxieties can defeat us. In addition, our worried can change our understanding of what is reality and what is not. Here is a brief list of techniques that you can use to help gain a better viewpoint on things during your anxious moments.

71 A person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off the problem. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, or do an activity that will give them a fre sh perspective on things.

Re member that our fearful thoughts are made to seem worse and can make the problem worse. 72 When unexpectedly having thoughts that make you fearful or anxious, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense.

Be smart in how you deal with your fears and anxieties. Do not try to deal with everything all at once. When facing a current or upcoming task that makes your anxious, break the task into a series of smaller steps. 73

Remember that all the worrying in the world will not change anything. Most of what we

worry about never comes true. 74 Everything else you can leave in the hands of God.

It is not easy to deal with all of our fears and worries. When your fears and anxieties have the best of you, try to calm down and then get the facts of the situation. The key is to take it show. All you can do is do your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it easy. 75

A.Take it one step at a time and things will work out.

B.When feeling anxious, stop what you are doing and try to do something relaxing.

It doesn't come as a surprise to you to realize that it makes no difference what you read or study if you can't remember it.You just waste your valuable time.71 One dependable aid that does help you remember what you study is to have a specific purpose or reason for reading. Why does a clerk in a store go away when your reply to her offer to help is, "No, thank you.I'm just looking."? Both you and she know that if you aren't sure what you want, you are not likely to find it.But suppose you say instead, "Yes, thank you.I want a pair of sun glasses." She says, "Right this way, please."

__72_ If you choose a book, "just looking" for nothing in particular, you are likely to get just that—nothing. But if you do know what you want, you are almost sure to get it.Your reasons will vary; they will include reading or studying "to find out more about", "to understand the reasons for" and "to find out how".

__73__ Before you start to study, you say to yourself something like this, "I want to know why Stephen Vincent Benet happened to write about America".Because you know why you are reading or studying, you relate the information to your purpose and remember it better.

74 At least two important processes go on at the same time.As you read, you take in ideas rapidly and accurately. But at the same time you express your own ideas to yourself as you react to what you read. You have a kind of mental conversation with the author.

This additional process of thinking about what you read includes evaluating it, relating it to what you already know, and using it for your own purposes.__75__ One part of critical reading, as you have discovered, is distinguishing between facts and opinions.Facts can be checked by evidence, Opinions are one's own personal reactions.Another part of critical reading is judging sources.Still another part is drawing accurate inferences.

A.Maybe you have already discovered some clever ways to keep yourself from forgetting.B.It is important for students to have a positive attitude to their study.

C.You remember better when you know what you' re reading.

D.In other words, a good reader is a critical reader.

E.It’s quite the same with your studying.

F.Reading is not one single activity.

G.This is the way it works.

I’ve been writing f or most of my life. The book Writing Without Teachers introduced me to one distinction and one practice that has helped my writing processes greatly.

____71____ Though you need to employ both while you are writing to get to a finished result, they cannot work in parallel no matter how much you might like to think so or even try to do so.

Trying to criticize(批评) writing on the fly is possibly the single greatest barrier to writing that most of us often come across. If you are listening to that 5th grade English teacher correct your grammar mistakes while you are trying to seize upon a fleeting (稍纵即逝的) thought, the thought will die. If you catch the fleeting thought and simply share it with the world just in raw form, no one is likely to understand it. ____72____

The practice that can help you to get rid of your bad habits of trying to edit as you write is what Elbow calls ―free writing.‖ In free writing, the objective is to get words down on paper non-stop, usually for 15-20 minutes. No stopping, no going back, no correcting, no deleting. ____73____ As the words begin to flow, the ideas will come from the shadows wildly and you just let themselves be noted down on your paper or your screen.

____74____ Most likely, you will believe that this will take more time than you actually have and you will end up staring blankly at the pages as the deadline draws near. Instead of staring at a blank, start filling it with words no matter how bad they are. Halfway through your available time, stop and rework your raw writing into something closer to finished product. ___75___.

A.Try to find faults in the raw writing.

B.The goal is to get the words flowing.

C.Write down the words coming to your mind with caution.

D.The distinction is between the creative mind and the critical mind.

E. Move back and forth and the final result will most likely be far better.

F. Now you have raw materials that you can begin to work with the critical mind.

G. You must learn to create first and then criticize if you want to make writing the tool for thinking.

Swapping Houses for Vacation

When budgeting for a vacation, usually the most expensive part of the trip is the accommodations. The traditional way to take a vacation is to pack some bags, lock up the house, and travel to a new place to stay in a hotel. However, hotels are very expensive, and with rent or housing loan(贷款)due every month, it's difficult for most people to pay for yet another place to stay.71 Luckily, there is a substitute called house swapping, and it's saving tourists a great deal of cash.

72 For example, if a couple from New York want to spend a week in Paris, they would place an ad offering to trade their New York apartment for one in Paris for a week.If a Parisian couple that want to vacation in New York read the advertisement, houses can be swapped, and both couples save hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars by avoiding big-city hotel fees.If all goes well, both couples can post positive reviews of the other's home online so that potential travelers can see that everything was fine.73 This builds a community of people who want to help each other out.

There are other advantages co house swapping as well.74 Staying at someone's home puts you in a neighborhood that can give you a better representation of the life and culture in the place you're visiting.75 The next time you want to spend your vacation in a new place, but don't want to pay a fortune, check what's posted online and find a house to swap.

A.House swapping is most common in New York and Paris.

B.Hotels are often quite difficult to book when you want to explore a new home.

C.A lot of times, this extra cost prevents travelers from going very far from home.

D.To swap houses, people check the Internet for others planning to travel and trade homes.E.With many house swapping sites growing, this new phenomenon is becoming easier than ever.F.Hotels are often located where few people live, making them a strange place to experience a city.

G.On the other hand, if there were trouble, people could write about that to wan others not to trust the swappers.

The word ―diary‖ comes from the Latin word ―diarium‖, which me ans ―daily allowance‖. 71 And it is used for business notes, planning activities, keeping track of scheduled appointments, or documenting what has already happened. Some doctors suggest that writing in a diary is a good form of self-study.

In America, from the 1940s through the 1980s, a diary was thought of mostly as a way to privately express one’s deepest thoughts while keepi ng notations about the day. 72 Many times, movies would show a teenage girl beginning to write in her diary while she said aloud, ―Dear diary…‖.

73 A diary kept by a young German Jewish girl by the name of Anne Frank provides us with invaluable lessons about history, for she documented her experiences while she hid from the Nazis during their occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. Her diary became one of the world’s most widely read books and is the basis for many film s.

a.

Samuel Pepys, who lived during the 17th century, is the earliest diary keeper that is famous today. His diary is also an important documentation of history, for it gives personal insight(洞察力) into London’s Great Pla gue and the Great Fire. His diary is being published on the Internet, and i t’s interesting to note that there has been a new entry every day since January of 2003. It will continue over the course of several years to come. 74

Today’s electronic version of the diary, the web log or ―blog‖has once again stretched the diary to be much more than a personal account of the day’s events. There are blogs to document recipes, traveling, movies, independent news, product announcements, photos, and anything else

that needs to be recorded over time. Search engines like https://www.wendangku.net/doc/a8744956.html, have been created to keep track of the more than 112 million blogs that are currently public. 75

A. It refers to a book for writings by date.

B. In its newest form, the diary has become more popular than ever.

C. Reading his diary is fascinating, and it makes his life all the more real to us.

D. People love to write diaries, so whenever they are free, they will write a few lines.

E. Those private reflections may have historical significance long after the author’s death.

F. Nowadays, the blog has taken the place of the diary and becomes more and more popular.

G. In those times, and even continuing on today, writing in a diary was like writing to a special friend.

Here are a few tips to help you along the way: Nature is all around us. 37 For small kids, there’s likely plenty in the backyard, courtyard, or schoolyard. National parks are great, but kids foster a deep connection with nature close to home! 38 Don’t worry too much about what to do once you arrive at your nature-rich destination. What kids really need is free time to engage all their senses and use their imaginations. You can learn too. What counts is simply to get out there, show that you value the outdoors, and be ready to have fun. 39 In fact, it is not necessary for you to know anything at all about science or nature. And remember, questions are more powerful than answers anyway! Sit back and watch your kids learn. Don’t be too much of a helicopter parent, always saying “no”. ? A. Later I received 50 cents an hour. () B. Before long, she let me sit there by myself. () C. I ended my selling a record amount of cosmetics. () D. Today I still carry that lesson with me: I listen to customers. E. My grandma’s trust taught me how to handle responsibility. F. Soon I found myself looking more beautiful than ever before. G. Watching my money grow was more rewarding than anything I could have bought. () 步骤二:快速浏览文章,确定文章体裁,抓住文章结构。 不同的文章有不同的结构形式,确定文章体裁有利于我们确定各段之间的关系。 一般说来,记叙文的语言是按时间发展顺序或因果关系排列的,常用的连接词有:then, later, after that, soon, after a while, in the end, so, as a result, because of that等。
