Sixteen years ago, Eileen Doyle's husband, an engineer, took his four children up for an early morning cup of tea, packed a small case and was never seen or heard of again. Eileen was astonished and in a state of despair. They had been a happy family and, as far as she knew, there had been nothing wrong with their marriage.

Every day of the year a small group of men and women quietly pack a few belongings and, without so much as a note or a good-bye, close the front door for the last time, leaving their debts, their worries and their confused families behind them. Last year, more than 1,200 men and nearly as many women were reported missing from home--the highest in 15 years. Many did return home within a year, but others rejected the past completely and are now living a new life somewhere under a different identity.

To those left behind, this form of desertion is a terrible blow to their pride and self-confidence. Even the finality of death might be preferable. At least it does not imply rejection or failure. Worse than that, people can be left with an unfinished marriage, not knowing whether they will have to wait seven years before they are free to start a fresh life.

Clinical psychologist Paul Brown believes most departures of this kind to be well

planned rather than impulsive. "It's typical of the kind of personality which seems

able to ignore other people's pain and difficulties. Running away, like killing yourself, is a highly aggressive act. By creating an absence the people left behind feel guilty, upset and empty."

43. The man or woman left behind with an unfinished marriage usually_________.

A. admit their responsibility for the situation

B. feels embarrassed and useless

C. will have no legal marriage life for seven years

D. wishes the person who has left were dead

44. Which might be the best title of the passage? ___________

Thanks to modern technologies, we now have the solutions to most eyesight problems. Doctors can use different treatments—PRK, Lasik (镭射视力矫正术) , Lasek and Intraocular Lenses—to solve all types of eyesight problems while limiting the side effects. People believe eye operations are about as safe and effective as surgery (外科手术) can be. However, for an industry that promises clearness, many hospitals have kept their patients in the dark about the risks and realities. Governments are of no help either as there are no limits to who can buy medical instruments. Despite a good record of the surgery, thousands of people around the world suffer from an eye operation that goes wrong. The consumer--advocate website http://www.wendangku.net/doc/a0a9e0066137ee06eef91863.html posts an astonishing series of unhappy endings—infected corneas(角膜),triple vision (三重视觉) and permanently damaged eyesight. The message boards are full of people who came out of Lasik with far better vision but still in great unhappiness, affected by poor night vision, dry eyes and worse. It's vital to research the subject if you're considering surgery. Here's a guide to help you see things clearly.

Know what you're getting into. If you believe all the ads, after eye surgery, you'll be able to read the bottom line of an eye chart through a brick wall. If only it were true. You may not end up with a vision as good as is promised. Besides, eye surgery still isn't fit for people with certain severe vision problems or an eye disease. The same goes for children under 18 and pregnant women, whose eyes may be experiencing changes. So don't be shocked if a doctor gazes into your eyes and shows you the door. Finally, be prepared for side effect. Some complain of dry eyes and require eye drops known as artificial tears for months. Others see light circles and star bursts while driving at night. Fortunately such symptoms tend to be minor and fade away.

Find a doctor. Ask friends for recommendations or look for one on the Internet. Whatever you do, don't make a decision on a rock --bottom price. You have only one set of eyes.

Ask the doctor right questions: Who will be doing the operation? Being easily available and open communication with the doctor and his team are typical features of a good practice. What are your qualification certificates'? How much experience do you have? What's your complication rate(并发症比率)? The best doctors have a serious surgical complication rate below 1 percent. Beware of doctors who can't answer these questions. Finally, what's included in the price? Watch out for hospitals that offer a low price and then charge for extras for later visits.

50. From the first paragraph we know that____________.

A. doctors can deal with any eyesight problem without side effects

B. people are still concerned about the safety and effect of eye surgery

C. some hospitals don't tell the patients all the truth about eye surgery

D. government now do not care who can buy medical instruments

51.The writer mentions some information from a website to show that ___________.

A. the risk of having eye surgery is higher than expected

B. more and more people begin to take eyesight surgery

C. eyesight surgery can not bring people true happiness

D. much information about eye surgery on the Internet is false

52. By using the underlined words "shows you the door", the writer means the doctor ________.

A. shows you how to get to the operating room

B. will not carry out an eyesight operation on you

C. examines your eyesight with an eye chart on the door

D. asks you to open the door and let the next patient in

53. In the writer's opinion, what attitude should people hold before eyesight surgery? ________

A. Supportive.

B. Doubtful.

C. Cautious.

D. Casual.

54.According to the passage, what kind of doctor is preferable for eye surgery?_________

A. A doctor who offers a low price.

B. A doctor with a high complication rate.

C. A doctor willing to communicate with patients.

D. A doctor working in a large hospital.

We have all heard the expression: "Remember to stop and smell the roses." But, how often do we really take time out of our hectic fast-paced lives to notice the world around us?

I am as guilty as anyone of turning out the world in this manner, especially when I am driving on California's overcrowded streets. A short time ago, however, I witnessed an event that showed me how being wrapped up in my own little world has kept me from being fully aware of the bigger world picture around me.

I was driving to a business appointment and, as usual, I was planning in my mind what I was going to say. I came to a very busy crossroads where the stoplight had just turned red. "All right," I thought to myself, "I can beat the next light if I race ahead of the pack " My mind and car were in auto pilot, ready to go when suddenly my trance was broken by an unforgettable sight. A young couple, both blind, were walking arm-in-arm across this busy crossroads with cars whizzing by in every direction. The man was holding the hand of a little boy, while the woman was clutching a baby sling to her chest, obviously carrying a child. Each of them had a white cane extended, searching for clues to navigate them across the crossroads.

Initially I was moved. They were overcoming what I felt was one of the most feared handicaps--blindness. "Wouldn't it be terrible to be blind?" I thought. Without realizing the danger they were in, they were walking right the path of oncoming cars. I was frightened for them because I didn't know if the other drivers understood what was happening.

As I watched from the front line of traffic (I had the best seat in the house), I saw a miracle unfold before my eyes. Every car in every direction came to a simultaneous stop. I never heard the screech of brakes or even the peep of a car horn. Nobody even yelled, "Get out of the way!" Everything froze. In that moment, time seemed to stand still for this family. Amazed, I looked at the cars around me to verify that we were all seeing the same thing, I noticed that everyone's attention was also fixed on the couple. Never skipping a beat, the couple adjusted their course as they followed the coaching. Trusting their white canes and the calls from some concerned citizens, they made it to the other side of the road. As they arrived at the curb, one thing struck me---they were still arm-in-arm .I was taken aback by the emotionless expressions on their faces and judged that they had no idea what was really going on around them. Yet I immediately sensed the sighs of relief exhaled by everyone stopped at that intersection.

As I glanced into the cars around me, the driver on my right was mouthing the words "oh, did you

see that?!" The driver to the left of me was saying, "I can't believe it!" I think all of us were deeply moved by what we had just witnessed. Here were human beings stepping outside themselves for a moment to help four people in need.

I have reflected back on this situation many times since it happened and have learned several powerful lessons from it. Take time to look around and really see what is going on in front of you right now. Do this and you will realize that this moment is all there is, more importantly, this moment is all that you have to make a difference in life.

As I drove away from that busy intersection, I did so with more awareness of life and compassion for others than I had arrived there with. Since then I have made the decision to really see life as I go about my daily activities and use my God-given talents to help others less fortunate.

Do yourself a favor as you walk through life: Slow down and take the time to really see. Take a moment to see what is going on around you right now, right where you are. You may be missing something wonderful.

A.It’s good to wear a smile often.

B.It’s not wise to try too har d.

How to Stop Being Boy Shy

Shyness and feelings of insecurity towards the opposite sex are normal. It is part of growing up. Sometimes, adults even experience the same issues. If you’re a young girl and you find that you’re shy around boys, you’re not alone. However, it doesn’t mean that you always have to be that way. There are things you can do to start overcoming your shyness. Here are approaches you can take to stop being boy shy.

61._______________You need to develop your self-confidence and self-respect. You need to look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself every morning that yo u’re a good person and you have a lot of great qualities. Give yourself a mental pep talk (鼓舞士气的讲话) so you can start believing that boys and other girls will like you for who you are. It doesn’t matter if you are not beautiful, have low grades or still have baby fat. If you want other people to start liking you, you need to like and accept yourself first.

62. _______________ Boys of your age are going through the same thing you are, so they also have feelings of insecurity and uncertainty. The boy may be shy too! The difference is that boys tend to cover up their shyness and insecurity by being more loud or lively. If you start thinking that you’re all really the same at heart, you’ll find that boys will be much more approachable.

63. _______________If you would like to start winning friends and make an impression that you are approachable, smile when you make eye contact with someone. It’s a signal to the world that you are friendly and are open. When you smile at someone, the boy knows that you are accepting him.

64. _______________When you’re trying to get over your shyness around boys, don’t go the other extreme and behave shamelessly. Just be yourself and don’t be something or someone you’re not. Don’t agree to things in the conversation just to make him like you. Express your own opinions. Be original. You also don’t need to dress in a strange manner to attract their attention.

65. _______________There are many things to develop your self-respect and make you feel good about yourself. If you want to stop being boy shy or get over your shyness in general, then you need to develop yourself. Find things that interest you and explore it. If you love music, take singing classes or join the choir (合唱队). If you love art, start painting. Don’t make your life move around boys because there are so many other things you should be focusing on. It’s OK to work on your shyness, but it’s shouldn’t be your goal in life to get a boyfriend.

It’s up to you to get over your shyness around boys. Relax and take a deep breath so you know you look your best. Smile and be approachable so you don’t have to be boy shy anymore

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It’s my honor to give a speech here. My topic of speech is “After-class activities are of great benefit to us”. After-class activities play a really important part in our school life. Proper activities help enrich our lives, broaden our horizons and develop our personalities.

My own experience can serve as a case in point. When I was in Senior one, I became a member of our drama club, where I used to go on weekends, appreciating classic literature operas, acting out the plays and creating our own performances. Since my participation in various activities organized by the club after class, I have achieved a lot.

These activities bring me a lot of fun, provide me with good opportunities to develop new friendships and open a window through which I have a brand-new outlook. With so many benefits shown above, why not join us to have fun?

.
