Mapping Antarctica

Antarctica(南极洲) was on the map long before anyone ever laid eyes

on it. Nearly 2,4000 years ago, ancient geek philosophers such as Aristotle

believed that a great continent must exist at the bottom of the world. They

thought it was needed to balance out the continents at the top of the world.

In the 1500s, mapmakers often included a fanciful continent they referred to

as Terra Incognita (Latin for “unknown land”) at the bo ttom of their maps.

But it was not until the 1800s ---- after explorers had sighted and set foot on

Antarctica ---- that mapmakers got down to the business of really mapping

the continent, which is one-and-a-half times the size of the U.S..

While the coastline could be mapped by ships sailing around the continent, it took airplanes ---- and later, satellites ---- to chart Antarctica’s vast interior(内陆). That job continues today. And it is a job that can still require a mapmaker, or cartographer, to put on boots and head out into the wild.

Cole Kelleher is familiar with that. He is a cartographer with the Polar

Geospatial Center (PGC), which is based at the University of Minnesota

and has a staff at McMurdo Station. PGC teamed up with Google to use

the com pany’s Trekker technology to capture(绘制) images of Antarctica

for the Internet giant’s popular feature, Street View. A Trekker camera,

which is the size of a basketball, is set about two feet above a backpack.

The camera records images in all directions. “It weighs about 50 pounds.

I was out for two and a half days, hiking 10 to 12 hours each day,” says Kelleher. It was hard work, but really an incredible experience.” According to Kelleher there are plans to use the technology to create educational apps for museums.

The PGC staff at McMurdo Station provides highly specialized mapmaking services for the U.S. Antarctic Program. For one project, Kelleher used satellite images to map huge cracks in the ice. That helped a team of

researchers know whether they could safely approach their field camp on snowmobiles. Another recent project was to help recover a giant, high-tech helium (氦气) balloon used to carry scientific instruments high into the atmosphere. These balloons are launched in Antarctica because there is no danger that they will hurt anyone when they fall back down to Earth. Using satellite images, Kelleher and colleagues created maps of where the balloon could be found.

Antarctica may no longer be Terra Incognita, but it still holds countless mysteries. Cartographers and the maps they make will continue to be essential in helping scientists unlock those secrets.

59. From the passage, we can infer that Antarctic was on the map in the 1500s when ______.

A. mapmakers knew it was much larger than the U.S.

B. Aristotle named the continent Terra Incognita

C. no one had ever seen or been to the continent

D. it was such an interesting continent as was often referred to

60. At first The Polar Geospatial Center (PGC) works with Google ______.

A. to obtain images of Antarctica for Street View

B. to test the company’s Trekker technology

C. to create educational apps for museums

D. to hike for an amazing experience

61. The fourth paragraph mainly talks about ______.

A. satellite images which are used to map huge cracks in the ice

B. a high-tech helium balloon for carrying scientific instruments

C. how to safely approach the researchers’ field camp and the balloon

D. the specialized mapmaking services provided by the PGC staff

Today, we complete our story about the influential English writer William

Shakespeare. He wrote plays and poems during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth

centuries, which remain very popular today.

During earlier times, people would probably have learned several ancient Roman

and Greek plays. It was not unusual for writers to produce more current versions of

these works. For example, in Shakespeare’s play “The Comedy of Errors” Shakespeare

borrowed certain details from the ancient Roman writer Plautus. For his play

“Macbeth”, Shakespeare most likely used a work on Scottish history by Raphael

Holinshed for information. Shakespeare might have borrowed from other writers, but

the intensity(强度)of his imagination and language made the plays his own. While

many plays by other writers of his time have been forgotten, Shakespeare and his art live on.

Shakespeare was also influenced by the world around him. He described the sights and sounds of London in his plays. His works include observations about political struggles, the fear of diseases, and the popular language of the city’s tradesmen. Shakespeare’s knowledge of the English countryside is also clear. His works include descriptions of deep forests, local flowers, and the ancient popular traditions of rural people.

It would be impossible to list all of the ways in which Shakespeare’s works have influenced the world culture. But the first and greatest example would be his great influence on the English language. During his time, the English language was changing. Many new words from other languages were being added. Shakespeare used his sharp mind and poetic inventiveness to create hundreds of new words and rework old ones. For example, he created the noun forms of “critic”, “mountaineer”and “eyeball”. Many common expressions in English come from his plays, including “pomp and circumstance(装腔作势)”from “Othello”, “full circle(绕圈子地)”from “King Lear”, etc. The list of cultural creations influenced by Shakespeare is almost endless. From paintings to television to music and dance, Shakespeare was well represented. Shakespeare’s plays have been translated into

every major language in the world.

Shakespeare became a well-known writer during a golden age of theater. His years of hard work paid off.

62. From the passage, we can see that_______.

A. Shakespeare was hard-working when he was a student

B. many of Shakespeare’s works were influenced by earlier writings

C. the experience of living in London had no effect on Shakespeare’s works

D. Shakespeare became rich later because of the popularity of his works

63. Why could Shakespeare’s works survive his time?_______

A. Because there were so few people writing plays in his time.

B. Because he produced too many works that nobody else could do.

C. Because his works were rich in imagination and language.

D. Because he was a rich and influential person of his time.

64. The passage is mainly about_______. .

A. an introduction to Shakespeare’s life and his works

B. the main features and styles of Shakespeare’s plays

C. Shakespeare’s greatest influence on the world culture.

D. how culture influenced Shakespeare and he influenced culture.

Twenty years ago, I was at a party, talking to a whose name I have long since forgotten. Sometimes I think this man came into my life for the sole purpose of telling me this story, which has delighted and inspired me ever since.

The story he told me was about his younger brother, who was trying to be an artist; it was a real story about how brave, creative, and trusting his brother was. For the purpose of this story, let’s call the little brother Little Brother.

Little Brother, a young painter, went to France to surround himself with beauty and inspiration. He lived on the cheap, painted every day, visited museums, traveled to picturesque places, bravely spoke to everyone he met , and showed his work to anyone who would look at it. One afternoon, he struck up a conversation at a café with a group of charming young people, who turned out to be some fancy nobles. They look a liking to Little Brother and invited him to a party that weekend in a castle in the Loire Valley. They said this was going to be party of the year. It would be attended by the rich and famous and by several crowned heads of Europe. Best of all, it was a masquerade(化妆)ball, where nobody would hesitate in their spending on the costumes (戏服). “Dress up” they said, “and join us!”

Excited, Little Brother worked all week on a costume that he was certain would be highly impressive. He held back on neither the details nor the imagination of this creation. Then he tented a car and drove three hours to the castle. He changed into his costume in the car and went up the castle steps. Little Brother entered the ballroom, head held high.

Upon arrival, he immediately realized his mistake.

This was indeed a costume party---his new friends had not misled him there—but he had missed one detail in translation: This was a themed costume party. The theme was “a medieval court.” And Little Brother was dressed as a lobster(龙虾).

All around him, the wealthy and beautiful were dressed in fancy clothes, wearing sparking jewels. Little Brother, on the other hand, was wearing a red coat, red tights, red ballet slippers, and giant red claws. Also, his face was painted red, And he was the only American in the room , too.

He stood at the top of the steps for one long, frightful moment. Running away in shame seemed like the easiest response. But he didn’t run. Somehow he found his determination. He’d come this far, after all. He’d worked really hard to make this costume, and he was proud of it. He took a deep breath and walked onto the dance

floor.

As he moved into the crowd, a silence fell. The dancing stopped. The other guests gathered around little Brother. Finally someone asked him what on earth he was. Little Brother bowed deeply and announced, “ I am the court lobster.”

Then: laughter.

Not tease—just joy. They loved him. They loved his sweetness, his weirdness, his giant red claws, and his skinny legs in his bright tights. He made the party. Little Brother even ended up dancing with the queen of Belgium.

This is how you must do it, people.

At some point or another, I have created something in my life that did make me feel like I was the guy who just walked into a fancy ball wearing a homemade lobster costume. But you must stubbornly walk into that room, and you must hold your head high. Never apologize for it, never explain it away, and never be ashamed of it. You did your best with what you knew, and you worked with what you had, in the time you were given. You were invited, you showed up, and you simply cannot do more than that.

They might throw you out—then again, they might not. The ballroom is often more welcoming and supportive than you could ever imagine. You might end up dancing with royalty. Or you might just end up having to dance alone in the corner with your big, ugly red claws waving in the empty air.

That’s fine too. Sometimes it’s like that. What you absolutely must not do is walk out. Otherwise you will miss the party, and that would be a pity because—please believe me—we did not come all this great distance, and make all this great effort, only to miss the party at the last moment.

65. According to Para 3, Little Brother as a young painter was______.

A. enthusiastic but mean

B. optimistic but stubborn

C. ambitious and easy-going

D. open-minded and generous

66. It can be inferred from Para 4 that______.

A. people were not allowed to drive in a lobster costume

B. Little Brother cared little about the details of the costume

C. Little Brother was quite confident about his own costume

D. it cost Little Brother a lot of money to prepare the costume

67. Why did Little Brother finally choose not to leave the ballroom?________

A. He thought it was a great shame to run away.

B. he decided not o waste the effort he had made for the party.

C. It was too tiring for him to drive another 3 hours back.

D. Nobody at the party could recognize him with his face painted red

68. What is the turning point of the story?______

A. Little Brother stood at the top of the steps for a moment

B. As Little Brother showed up in the crowd, a silence fell

C. Someone at the party asked Little Brother what he was.

D. Little Brother bowed and replied that he was the court lobster.

69. What is the message the writer wants to convey in the passage?_______

A. We shouldn’t be so afraid of being foolish and absurd.

B. We can do everything at out pleasure at a party.

C. Dancing with a royal member is the symbol of success

D. A homemade costume is most welcome at a fancy dress ball

70. What would be the best title for the passage?______

A. A costume Made by hand

B. A lobster Walking into a Party

C. A Masquerade ball Held by Nobles

D. A Young Artist Realizing His Dream.

第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

请阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Bird migration(迁徙)

The main reason for migration or movement is food; for example, some birds may choose not to migrate if they are fed through the cold months. Changes in the day length are signals for migration and relate to the physical changes in the birds. Birds will also display restlessness and increase their fat deposition(沉积). During shorter days in the fall, birds will return to warmer areas where they find adequate food supply.

Many smaller insect-eating birds migrate large distances usually at night. They may feed for a new days before continuing their course of travel. An advantage for night migrating is that it minimizes the threat of predators(食肉动物), allowing the birds to feed during the day and avoid overheating.

The migration for these birds is based on a number of different senses. Many birds use the sun as a compass. The ability to detect magnetic field , use of visual landmarks, as well as their sense of smell are used to help travel during migration. Bird migration is a strong genetic factor in terms of timing and route, which can be influenced by temperature. Migratory birds may use two tools to find their destinations; innate capability(genetically programmed) and experience. A first-timer migrant(候鸟) flies according to the Earth’s magnetic field, but does not know how far it will take until it grows accustomed to the journey and is able to use its other capabilities. With experience it learns various landmarks often called “mapping”.

Migration is mainly seen in the Northern Hemisphere and less obvious in the Southern Hemisphere. This is due to the lack of significant weather changes and the continual supply of food for the birds. A common pattern in migration involves flying north in the spring to bread(繁殖)during the summer and traveling to the south in the fall into warmer regions. No two species follow the exact route from beginning to end. Migrations narrow into one or more preferred routes or often called “flyways”. Flyways mainly follow coasts, sometimes rives, or mountain ranges. There are four major North American flyways; the Atlantic, the Mississippi, the Central and the Pacific Flyways. The flyways are not defined in their boundaries and at times may be combined into one.

In fact, long distance migrants move away from each other as young birds and form attachments to potential breeding and wintering sites. Once the site attachment is made, birds show high site-faith, visiting the same sites year after year. You will want to ensure your nesting boxes are cleaned out and available when these birds return to keep the cycle going for these migrating species.
