第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分 35 分)

第一节(共 10 个小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 25 分)

A

When the body of 25-year-old Courtney Herron was found in Royal Park in Melbourne on Saturday, May 25, it was not the first time a homeless person had been killed in Melbourne. But this particular case has shocked the community and, according to informed sources, panicked the Victorian government.

Courtney Herron had been sleeping rough (露宿). She was experiencing mental health issues and trying to deal with drug addiction. Her shocking death reminds us of the risk of rough sleeping, and the disturbing and continuing reality of youth homelessness.

Some advocates are calling for a focus on rough sleeping and more crisis accommodation in the major cities where homeless people are most visible. Such advocacy is well-intentioned but deeply misguided.

Similar proposals have been raised before. In the early 1990s, there were calls for the empty 11-storey Prince Henry Hospital complex on St Kilda Road to be turned into a shelter for the homeless. Fortunately, experienced social workers came forward to advise Melbourne City Council not to bow to loud but misguided advocacy. The proposed Prince Henry Shelter complex did not happen and the hospital was destroyed in 1994.

Of course, there needs to be an efficient and effective response to rough sleeping in the Melbourne and every other ca pital city. Only last year Victoria’s Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Action Plan was launched, backed by a $9.8 million Towards Home package, “to provide housing and support to an increasing number of people sleeping rough across inner Melbourne”.

The fact is that the goal of housing rough sleepers has not been achieved, despite many attempts over the years. Developing more crisis accommodation seems to make sense, which is probably why such proposals continue to be raised. Crisis accommodation supports people who are currently homeless. It has an immediate and short-term impact, but cannot reduce homelessness.

21.According to the passage, Courtney Herron ____________.

A. was the first homeless woman killed in Melbourne

B. shocked the Victorian government due to drug abuse

C. had been sleeping rough and suffering mentally

D. was found killing herself in a park in Melbourne

22. According to the author, the advocacy of providing more shelters is______.

A. effective and efficient

B. well-meant but short-sighted

C. practical and well-designed

D. creative but cautious

23. What will the following paragraphs probably talk about?

A. Effective measures to solve urban homelessness issue.

B. Attempts to house rough sleepers in other cities.

C. Policies to stop building more crisis accommodation.

D. Reasons why homelessness in Melbourne can’t be reduced

B

Brushing your teeth twice a day should keep the dentist away. But if a group of scientific researchers have their wish, it will make the rest of your body healthy too. A toothbrush that checks blood sugar and bacteria while you brush is currently in development in the USA. It is one of many

things proposed by engineers and doctors at the Center for Future Health in New York –others include a pair of glasses that help with your memory, and a home camera designed to check for cancer.

The devices seem fanciful, but the basic principles are simple. They should make it easy for people to discover illness long before it strikes and so seek treatment far earlier than normal. Instead of relying on hi-tech hospitals, the emphasis is shifted to the home and easy-to-use devices.

Intelligent bandages are a good example. Powerful sensors within the bandage could quickly identify tiny amounts of bacteria in a wound and determine which antibiotics (抗生素) would work best. The cut could then be treated instantly, so avoiding possible complications (并发症).

The biggest single development is a melanoma (黑素瘤) monitor designed to give early warnings of cancer. The device could be used to take a picture of your body each week, then compare it to previous images. If a problem is found, the system would advise you to get a check-up at your doctor’s surgery.

If all this sounds troublesome, then help is at hand. Experts are also worki ng on a “digital doctor”, complete with a comforting bedside manner. A standard computer would be able to understand your voice and answer questions about your symptoms in plain English and in a way which would calm your nerves.

24. Why did the author mention brushing teeth twice a day in Paragraph 1?

A. To offer some details

B. To serve as an example.

C. To prove the opposite view.

D. To introduce the topic.

25.What can a melanoma monitor do according to the passage?

A. Cure people of skin cancer.

B. Warn people of potential cancer.

C. Take a picture of bacteria.

D. Check up people’s health condition.

26. Which of the following is the best title?

A. A doctor in the house

B. Advanced technologies to benefit people

C. Computer-based cancer monitors

D. Hi-tech hospitals on the way

C

The Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) released a report on Australian students’ sense of belonging in school in May. It described as “disturbing” some of the differences in Australian stu dents’ sense of belonging between male and female students, students from high and low economic backgrounds, and students from different cultural backgrounds.

A sense of belonging in school is the degree to which students feel respected, accepted and

supported by teachers and peers. It has been linked to students’ attention and effort in class, their persistence and completion of learning activities. An understanding of belonging is important for educators. It allows them to plan effective practices to support students in the classroom and school-wide.

A study from the US found students’ sense of belonging declines from year 7 through to year 11.

With it, students’ educational expectation also decrease. This decline may be due to a mismatch between stud ents’ need for autonomy ( 自主) and interaction, and their learning environment. They may experience less supportive and caring teacher-student relationships, increased teacher control, and limited opportunities for autonomy. A similar study in Finland also found this might be because secondary students need to adapt to a larger social network and a larger number of teachers, so they may not know their peers or teachers as well.

Importantly, some groups of students may feel lower levels of belonging. This includes students with different cultural or language backgrounds, students with disabilities or students awkward in social interaction.

Teachers and schools play an important role in nurturing students’ sense of belonging. If a student considers their school and teacher to be caring and accepting, they’re more likely to adopt the academic and social values of their school and teacher. Teachers and schools can take steps to improve students’ sen se of belonging in school, which is important for all students and especially those identified as being at-risk.

27.Why is it important for educators to understand students’ sense of belonging?

A.Teachers can assess students’ effort easily.

B.Students can plan their learning effectively.

C.Teachers can be more supportive to students.

D.Students can understand learning activities better.

28.Students’ sense of belonging declines partly because________.

A.they expect less of their academic performance.

B.they care less about teacher-student relationship.

C.they are more frequently monitored by teachers.

D.they are given limited opportunities for discussion.

29.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.Students can be deeply affected by teachers’ social value.

B.Students are more likely to accept caring teachers.

C.Some students are identified as losing sense of belonging.

D.Teachers can help to raise students’ level of belonging.

30.The underlined word “nurturing” in the last paragraph probably means “_______”.

A.protecting

B. developing

C. understanding

D. controlling

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was a few years ago, and I had taken a part-time job in a video store at the local shopping mall. From inside the store, I’d begun to see the people rushing by outside in the wide hallway as a riv er of human.

The elderly woman had washed upon my store, along with a younger woman who I guessed was her daughter. The daughter was displaying a serious case of impatience, rolling her eyes, checking her watch every few seconds.

The elder woman separated from the younger one and began to search through the DVDs on the nearest shelf. After the slightest hesitation, I walked over and asked if I could help her find something.

The woman smiled up at me and showed me a title written on a piece of paper.

Rather than rushing off to locate the DVD for the woman, I asked her to walk with me so I could show her where she could find it. Looking back, I think I wanted to enjoy her company for a moment.

Something about her careful movements reminded me of my own mother, who’d passed away the previous Christmas.

As we walked along the back of the store, I began to introduce its floor plan: old television shows, action movies, cartoons, science fiction. The woman seemed glad of the unrushed company and casual conversation.

We found the movie, and I complimented her on her choice. She smiled and told me it was one she’d enjoyed when she was her son’s age and that she hoped he would enjoy it as much as she had.

Then, unwillingly, I had to return the elderly woman to her keeper, who was still tapping her foot at the front of the store.

I took the elder woman to the queue at the cash register and then stepped back and lingered near

the younger woman. When the elder woman’s turn in line came and t he cashier put the DVD into a plastic bag, I turned to the younger woman.

Text 10

In my spoken English class, I asked students about their impressions of university life. To my surprise, many of them expressed their disappointment. After their highly controlled high school lives, they were having difficulty adjusting to the free time at university. When I asked them to describe their high school lives, many of them told me they got up at 6:00 in the morning and studied until 10:00 at night. Most of the time was spent at school doing piles of homework to help them prepare for the college entrance examination.

Once they enter university, in my opinion, the students should not be expected to devote all their waking hours to studying. They should also take an active part in school activities. Therefore they should learn to divide their time outside costs between sports and clubs. What's more, they should spend some time watching TV and chatting with the roommates. These activities are useful in accumulating experience for the future. But what struck me most was that many of them didn't seem particularly

happy about their new-found freedom. As they had so many choices, they felt that no matter what they were doing, they should be doing something else. That's why they were not happy. To those students, my advice was: get used to it and learn to make decisions for yourselves.

On behalf of the Student Union, I am writing to inform you of the schedule this weekend.

You are supposed to assemble at the school gate at 8:00 this Saturday before heading for a wooden-structured temple. Hopefully, you will enjoy the weekend with us.

Still watching the mother, I said, “You should cherish her.” I smiled to show her I wasn’t criticizing. And then I answered her curious expression by saying, “When she’s gone, it’s the little moments that’ll come back to you. Moments like this. I know.” Then I told her how I missed my mom who had passed away and the moments when I had used my impatience to make her life miserable. The daughter turned to her mother. The elderly woman moved with her deliberate slowness back to her daughter’s direction. Together they made their way toward the store’s exit. They stood there for a moment, side by side, watching the rush of the holiday current and for their place in it. Then the daughter glanced over and instantly looked into her mother’s eyes. And slowly, almost unwillingly, she placed her arm with apparently unaccustomed affection around her mother’s shoulders an d gently guided her back into the river of human.

His companies even made and sold weapons. Isn’t this something that surprises you? The man who made money from weapons should set up the Peace Prize? Though Alfred Nobel had a lot of money from weapons, he hated war. He hoped that there would be no war in the world. He was one of the richest in Europe. When he died in 1896, he left behind him a lot of money and his famous will. According to his will, most of his money was placed in a fund. He wanted the interest from the fund to be used as prizes every year. We know them as the Nobel Prizes. The Nobel Prizes are international. Alfred Nobel wanted the winners to be chosen for their work, not the country they came from. Alfred Nobel had given his whole life to his studies and work and to the benefits of mankind. He made money all by his own efforts, but he left the world share his wealth. His inventions and wealth stay with the world for ever. 1.Nobel wanted to set up the Nobel Peace Prize because _____. It is only when we cannot see perfectly that we come to see how important our eyes are. People who are nearsighted can only see things that are very close to their eyes. Many people who do a lot of close work, such as writing, reading and sewing, become nearsighted. Then they have to wear glasses in order to see distant things clearly.

2019年浙江省温州市高考英语模拟试卷(2月份)-解析版

2019年浙江省温州市高考英语模拟试卷(2月份) 一、阅读理解(本大题共10小题,共25.0分) A ‘Turtle time!,loudly called out by one of my newly-found friends, meant the beginning of either a morning or afternoon shift at Turtle Camp in Nusa Penida,Indonesia.Upon arrival at the project each day,we would look eagerly for our names on the whiteboard to see which task we would be undertaking.Would it be the highly desirable ‘turtle feeding',the pretty fun ‘tank cleaning',the exciting ‘medicine administering' or the less appealing ‘fish cutting'?Fine in theory but not when every fly in Indonesia decides to crowd onto these dead fish while you're cutting! Life at the turtle project was fun because twice a day we got to hang out with sea turtles.By ‘hang out',I obviously meant ‘work',as we were on shift, but it certainly didn't feel like work.Another fun thing was getting to know the other volunteers! With volunteers from all over the world,it was just common to hear Finnish being spoken,Australian slang mixed with French expressions and Swedes making plans to visit newly-found friends in the USA.Of course, not all the time at Turtle Camp was consumed by volunteering.Scheduled activities included a trip to Crystal Bay,a beautiful paradise for swimming and sunbathing,an awesome beach bonfire complete with a beautiful sunset as well as our local coworkers showing off their guitar playing and singing skills. Our time at Turtle Camp was capped off by setting free two of our turtles into the sea to begin their journey as independent turtles! Hopefully, the love and care provided at the turtle project would ensure that these turtles had a greater chance of survival in the big, wide and scary ocean. 1.Which task is less fun to the volunteers at Turtle Camp?______ A. Turtle feeding. B. Tank cleaning. C. Medicine Administering. D. Fish Cutting. 2.What does the underlined sentence imply?______ A. The volunteering was a challenge. B. The time at the camp was difficult. C. The work at the project was a delight. D. Communication was time-consuming. 3.When setting free the two turtles, the volunteers felt a sense of ______ . A. achievement B. belonging C. loss D. independence B If you're looking at livable cities as inspiration for your holiday, you'll miss out on many great tourist destinations.According to Mercer's 2018 Quality of Living Survey,Moscow ranks 167 and Beijing only 119,yet both provide ample visitor pleasures.Meanwhile high-ranked cities such as Kobe (神户)or Seattle may be easy places to live in,but offer only passing interest to tourists. In truth, many of the world's most livable cities are a little dull. The world isn't rushing to visit Canberra or Montreal. In fact, none of the world's 10 most visited cities appear in Mercer's top 20.Clearly,considerations that create enjoyable holiday destinations differ from those that make cities fine places to live in. This should be no surprise, since livability lists aren't concerned with tourists or even local residents but rather expats(侨民).Mercer, for example,is a British-based professional service firm whose lists supply multinationals with human resources information about where to locate their businesses."The success of foreign business is influenced by issues such as ease of travel and communication, personal safety, and access to public services, says Slagin Parakatil, who oversees Mercer's research. In short,Mercer considers whether cities are attractive to business and investment, and have good schools, hospitals and housing while such factors seldom influence tourists. Still,Mercer's Quality of Living Survey has its uses for tourists, since it also looks at natural and cultural environments and recreation. It ranks public transport and infrastructure(基础设施)particularly highly,a consideration shared by the World Economic Forum in reports on tourism and travel competitiveness. This includes hotels,rental-cars and even ATM availability, all of which make a destination friendly to expats and visitors alike. 4.What do we know about livable cities?______ A. They hardly offer tourist passing interest. B. They may not be good tourist destinations. C. They can arouse the inspiration of visitors. D. They are usually highly ranked by tourists. 5.What is Mercer more concerned about when ranking livable cities?______ A. Tourist attractions. B. ATM availability. C. Business-friendliness. D. Local residents. 6.Why does the writer use Mercer's Quality of Living Survey?______ A. To make his view convincing. B. To compare those livable cities. C. To better understand the survey. D. To support the British-based firm. C Every day around the world, thousands of people with little to no scholarly training in art history walk into museums. They may or may not read notice boards that share relevant information of the artworks or artists.Imagine, before being permitted to direct their eyeballs to the art on the walls, museum visitors were required to read a 15- or 20-page introduction to each piece or each artist. How many people would go to museums if that were the case? Yet this seems to be the expectation when it comes to reading classic literature.Classic novels typically come with 15- or 20-page introductions, which often include spoilers, assuming that readers do not come to classic books to discover,be absorbed in,and be surprised by the story world. Also, apparently,we mustn't read classics alone, without experts guiding our experiences. However, classic literature is in a unique position to show us that we're not alone in our pains and joys.By taking us out of our time, classic books free us to see beyond the set of beliefs we stick to and to connect human experiences that remain alive across time and place. What could be more grounding, more comforting, than seeing ourselves in the battles, longings, and pleasures that have played out across hundreds, thousands of years of human history? Our personal engagement is the first step of a longer journey of discovery that deepens our knowledge and understanding of ourselves and our world. We may,for example, feel for Hester Prynne from Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter though we despair of the world she lived in. While we're letting go of things, let's stop worrying about understanding everything. We can't.It will be fun if we embrace curiosity, the pleasure of working out a mystery, and our common relationships as humans. We can feel, for example, the power of self-sacrifice in Charles Dickens'A Tale of Two Cities even when we lack full understanding of the cultural references and language. 7.Most museum goers ______ . A. enjoy reading notice boards B. understand the artworks well C. lack professional art knowledge D. share common interest in artworks 8.What can the spoilers in Para.2 possibly be ?______ A. Story writers. B. Readers' expectations. C. Guiding experts. D. Plots given away in advance. 9.What prevents readers enjoying reading classics?______ A. Showing curiosity about the writers. B. Letting go of things.
