Part II Reading Comprehension (40%)

Section A

Directions:There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C)

and D). You should decide on the best choice and write the corresponding letter on

the Answer Sheet.(30%)

Passage One

Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:

Petroleum products, such as gasoline, kerosene, home heating oil, residual fuel oil, and lubricating oils, come from one source—crude oil found below the earth's surface, as well as under large bodies of water, from a few hundred feet below the surface to as deep as 25,000 feet into the earth's interior. Sometimes crude oil is secured by drilling a hole through the earth, but more dry holes are drilled than those producing oil. Pressure the source or pumping forces crude oil to the surface.

Crude oil wells flow at varying rates, from ten to thousands of barrels per hour. Petroleum products are always measured in 42 gallon barrels.

Petroleum products vary greatly in physical appearance: thin, thick, transparent or opaque, but regardless, their chemical composition is made up of only two elements: carbon and hydrogen, which form compounds called hydrocarbons. Other chemical elements found in union with the hydrocarbons are few and are classified as impurities. Trace elements are also found, but these are of such minute quantities that they are disregarded. The combination of carbon and hydrogen forms many thousands of compounds which are possible because of the various positions and joining of these two atoms in the hydrocarbon molecule.

The various petroleum products are refined from the crude oil by heating and condensing the vapors. These products are the so-called light oils, such as gasoline, kerosene, and distillate oil. The residue remaining after the light oils are distilled is known as heavy or residual fuel oil and is used mostly for burning under boilers. Additional complicated refining processes rearrange the chemical structure of the hydrocarbons to produce other products, some of which are used to upgrade and increase the octane rating of various types of gasoline.

11. Which of the following is NOT true?

A) Crude oil is found below land and water.

B) Crude oil is always found a few hundred feet below the surface.

C) Pumping and pressure force crude oil to the surface.

D) A variety of petroleum products is obtained from crude oil.

12. Many thousands of hydrocarbon compounds are possible because ____.

A) the petroleum products vary greatly in physical appearance

B) complicated refining processes rearrange the chemical structure

C) the two atoms in the molecule assume many positions

D) the pressure needed to force it to the surface causes molecular transformation

13. Which of the following is true?

A) The various petroleum products are produced by filtration.

B) Heating and condensation produce the various products.

C) Chemical separation is used to produce the various products.

D) Mechanical means such as the centrifuge (离心机) are used to produce the various

products.

14. How is crude oil brought to the surface?

A) Expansion of the hydrocarbons.

B) Pressure and pumping.

C) Vacuum created in the drilling pipe.

D) Expansion and contraction of the earth's surface.

15. Which of the following is NOT listed as a light oil?

A) Distillate oil. B) Lubricating oil.

C) Gasoline. D) Kerosene.

Passage Two

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:

Both civilization and culture are fairly modern words, having come into prominent use during the 19th century by anthropologists, historians, and literary figures. There has been a strong tendency to use them interchangeably as though they mean the same thing, but they are not the same.

Although modem in their usage, the two words derived from ancient Latin. The word civilization is based on the Latin civil, of a city. Thus civilization, in its most essential meaning, is the ability of people to live together harmoniously in cities, in social groupings. From this definition it would seem that certain insects, such as ants or bees, are also civilized. They live and work together in social groups. So do some microorganisms. But there is more to civilization, and that is what culture brings to it. So, civilization is inseparable from culture.

The word culture is derived from the Latin verb colere, "to till the soil". But colere also has a wider range of meanings. It may, like civil, mean inhabiting a town or village. But most of its definitions suggest a process of starting and promoting growth and development, One may cultivate a garden; one may also cultivate one's interests, mind, and abilities. In its modern use the word culture refers to all the positive aspects and achievements of humanity that make mankind different from the rest of the animal world. Culture has grown out of creativity, a characteristic that seems to be unique to human beings.

One of the basic and best-known features of civilization and culture is the presence of tools. But more important than their simple existence is the tools are always being improved and enlarged upon, a result of creativity. It took thousands of years to get from the first wheel to the latest, most advanced model of automobile.

It is the concept of humans as toolmakers and improvers that differentiates them from other animals. A monkey may use a stick to knock a banana from a tree, but that stick will never, through a monkey's cleverness, be modified into a hook or a ladder. Monkeys have never devised a spoken language, written a book, composed a melody, built a house, or painted a portrait. To say that birds build nests and beavers their dens is to miss the point. People once lived in caves, but their cleverness, imagination, and creativity led them to progress beyond caves to buildings.

16. What does the author think of the words "civilization" and "culture"?

A). They are identical.

B). They are different concepts.

C). They can often be used interchangeably.

D). They are defined differently by different people.

17. According to the author the word "civilization" originally refers to

A). people's way of life in cities

B). people's ability to live together in cities

C). a type of social organizations

D). an advanced level of social life

18. The Latin verb colere originally means"__________".

A). live in a city B). develop oneself

C). promote growth D). cultivate the land

19. The author believes that creativity____________

A). is a unique feature of civilized beings

B). brings forth the improvement of tools

C). is the result of human development

D). helps the advance of culture

20. The author mentions monkeys in the last paragraph to show that _____

A). man is different from others animals such as monkeys

B). people once lived in caves like monkeys

C). monkeys can never develop into human beings

D). monkeys are the same as birds

Passage Three

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:

In Britain people don't only die. They pass over, pass on and pass away. They kick the bucket or they bite the dust. They cash in their chips or they peg out. They fall (in battle). They lay down their lives. They are laid to rest. They are deceased or departed. They expire ... Death is not something most people find easy to talk about. In English, euphemisms for such a delicate subject abound.

Of course, euphemisms are a universal phenomenon. Few of us get through a day without using them either consciously or unconsciously. Euphemisms are those words and expressions we use in place of more offensive ones. They are an interesting part of our vocabulary because they conceal what people are afraid to speak of openly, be it bodily functions or dishonesty or fatal disease.

Over the years, vast collections of euphemisms have developed around certain topics. These surely reflect the strength of the underlying taboos or society's ambivalent (矛盾的) feelings on the subject. If today, politics, commerce and industry and warfare have replaced religion and superstition as growth areas for euphemisms, nonetheless, other topics (drunkenness, crime, death, illness, madness) continue to offer as rich a vocabulary in the 2000s as in Shakespeare's day.

Euphemisms fall into different categories. Some are motivated by thoughtfulness. People use them to be polite, making only delicate reference to potentially distressing subject.

Birthday Suit — It is not a suit at all. If you are in your birthday suit, you have no clothes on You are naked - wearing what you wore at your birth, in fact. Loo--Toilet. Of all the euphemisms for toilet, and there are many, this is the most popular in Britain. It is a casual, friendly term, in contrast to other more formal euphemisms - - ladies/ gents, WC, public conveniences.

21. The phrase "kick the bucket" most likely means _____.

A) be angry B) die C) conceal D) be unlucky

22. People around the world use euphemisms to _____ when talking about unpleasant topics.

A) hide their real feelings B) be polite

C) be humorous D) meet the development of the society

23. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A) In Britain, when a person dies, a grand ceremony will be held.

B) In Britain, before a person dies, people do a lot of things to make the dying person rest in

peace.

C) Not only British people commonly use euphemisms.

D) With the development of the society, euphemisms on many ordinary topics die out.

24. What is true about the expression "loo"?

A) It is the English translation for French "leau".

B) It is as friendly a term as others such as ladies/gents, WC.

C) British people prefer using it to other euphemisms for toilet.

D) Formal euphemisms are not popular in Britain.

25. The best title for this passage is _____.

A) The Origin of Euphemisms B) The Usage of Euphemisms

C) Say What You Don't Mean D) Say What You Mean

Section B

Directions:In this section, there is one passage followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. Read the passage carefully, then write your answers on the Answer Sheet.(10%) For centuries man dreamed of achieving vertical (直线的) flight. In 400 A.D. Chinese children played with a fan-like toy that spun upwards and fell back to earth as rotation ceased. Leonardo da Vinci conceived the first mechanical apparatus, called a "Helix", which could carry a man straight up, but his was only a design and was never tested.

The ancient dream was finally realized in 1940 when a Russian immigrant, an aeronautical engineer, piloted a strange looking craft of steel tubing with a rotating fan on top. It rose awkwardly and vertically into the air from a standing start, hovered a few feet above the ground, went sideways and backwards, and then settled back to earth. That vehicle was called helicopter.

Imaginations were fired. Men dreamed of commuting to work in their own personal helicopter. Every man would have one in his backyard. People anticipated that vertical flight transports would carry millions of passengers as do the airliners of today. Such fantastic expectations were not fulfilled.

The helicopter has now become an extremely versatile machine. It excels in military missions, carrying troops, guns and strategic instruments where other aircraft cannot go. Corporations use them as airborne offices, many metropolitan areas use them in police work, construction and logging companies employ them in various advantageous ways, engineers use them for site selection and surveying, and oil companies use them as the best way to make offshore and remote work stations accessible to crews and supplies. Any urgent mission to get to a place is a likely task for a helicopter. Among their other multitude of uses, they deliver people across town, fly to and from airports, assist in rescue work and aid in the search for missing or wanted persons.

26. What is a helicopter?

27. What is said about the development of the helicopter?

28. Why has the helicopter become an extremely versatile machine?

29. Why do people use helicopters in any urgent mission?

30. According to this passage, which dream was not realized?

PART V TRANSLATION (30 minutes, 20 points) Section A (15 minutes, 10 points) One of the unintended consequences of the flattening world is that it puts different societies and cultures in much greater direct contact with one another. It connects people to people much faster than people and cultures can often prepare themselves. Some cultures thrive on the sudden opportunities for collaboration that this global intimacy makes possible. Others are frustrated, and even humiliated by this close contact, which, among other things, makes it easy for people to see where they stand in the world in relation to everyone else. All of this helps to account for the emergence of one of the most devastating forces today - the suicide bombers and other terrorist organizations which have no regard for human lives and which it is in our best interest to wipe out. This act is intended (aims) to introduce education reform in America's elementary and secondary schools and give all children the access to high-quality education. The ultimate goal is to ensure that no one is left behind. As a result of the implementation of this act, schools enjoy more flexibility to use resources where they are needed most. Parents can get more involved in the child's education. PART V TRANSLATION (30 minutes, 20 points) Section A (15 minutes, 10 points) In this book, we offer advice that we hope will seem reasonable and worth serious consideration. But as any experienced writer knows, there are occasions when even the best advice may not apply. The demands of writing for different audiences, with different purposes, on different subjects, at different levels of formality are so varied that they cannot begin to be anticipated in a book like this, and we recognize that what is appropriate for one piece of writing may not be appropriate for another. In most cases, you will have to avoid ambiguity at all costs so as not to leave your words open to misinterpretation. Section B(15 minutes,10 points) 中国可持续发展依赖的有限自然资源正在锐减。一方面是生产规模在不断扩大,消耗更多的能源;另一方面是缺少能高效利用能源的生产设备。这迫使我们思考如何为后人留下足够的环境空间以使他们实现他们的愿望。 The limited natural resources on which China's sustainable development depends are declining sharply, on the one hand, the expanding scale of production leads to (results in) increased consumption of energy / the scale of production keeps expanding, consuming more energy. On the other hand, production facilities (equipment) that can utilize energy efficiently are lacking. That (This) forces us to think about how to leave enough environmental space to future generations (our offspring) so that they can fulfill their aspirations. The fast development of telecommunications has made the cell (mobile) phone popular among (a favorite of) high schoolers (high school students). Despite its multiple (many) functions, the cell
