Unit1 Love Without Limitations

Summary:

My brother, Jimmy, suffered lack of oxygen during a difficult delivery, leaving him with brain damage. From then on, my family life revolved around his. My mother taught him practical things like how to brush his teeth. I was in charge outside where I administered justice by tracking down the parents whose kids picked on him, and telling on them. My father held the family together with such patience that Jimmy could not go anywhere without his company.

But misfortune also loves company. My father and mother died respectively of a heart attack and lung cancer in 1991. As an immediate result of that, Jimmy, though under careful disguise, fell into a wreck, grasping that the world he’d known was gone for good. I pledged to help him out of it. Through my constant efforts, I was eventually able to work it out. Now he has lived in my parents’ house for 11 years with many different caretakers and blossomed on his own. In fact, caring for someone who loves as deeply and appreciates my efforts as much as Jimmy does has enriched my life more than anything else ever could have.

This hit home in the wake of the September 11th disaster, when I managed to hold a party for his 57th birthday. I called on my friends to make it a merry and festive occasion, ignoring the fact that the sheer terror had drained Americans of all happiness in those days. For Jimmy, however, the party was a welcome bonus, and mostly he had just wanted to see everyone else happy again. He made it in the end. Indeed, there had never been any limitations to what Jimmy’s love could accomplish.

Unit2 Iron and the Effects of Exercise Summary

This text is about iron and the effects of exercise, which shows that exercise may lead to more loss of iron in females, which in turn produces serious effects on their health. Sports medicine experts have observed that endurance athletes, particularly females, frequently have iron deficiencies. A new study shows that inactive women who started a program of moderate exercise showed evidence of iron loss. And the new exercisers who followed their normal diet showed a decrease in iron levels. Iron deficiency is very common among women because of the following general reasons: ignoring the amount of iron they take in, monthly bleeding, rejecting red meat and not consuming enough iron-rich food. There are two other specific reasons: one is that the average woman takes in only two thirds of the recommended daily allowance of iron; the other is that exercise can result in iron loss through a variety of mechanisms. There are three stages of iron deficiency: the first stage has no symptoms; in the second stage there is not enough iron; and in the third stage, your iron reserves go to zero and you are in trouble. It is advisable for people to use a better way to have a yearly blood test to check blood iron reserves if they don’t know whether they have an iron deficiency or not. In general, it’s better to undo the problem by adding more iron-rich foods to the diet. If you pay attention to warning signs before iron reserves are

gone then you can remedy the deficiency in time.

Unit3 Where Principles Come First Summery:

T he text is about the Hyde School’s successful search for a new approach in education, which is centered upon teaching students the merit of such values as truth, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern.

Hyde School sees itself as preparing children for life by cultivating a comprehensive set of principles, which include the values of courage, integrity, leadership, curiosity and concern. Academic success will then naturally follow. Hyde school founder Joseph Guald believes that parents must be committed to the school’s ideas. Both the teachers and the students benefit from the program. Teachers begin to focus on having a fruitful relationship with each student.

Unite4 Five Famous Symbols of American Culture Summary:

This text is about five symbols of American culture: The Statue of Liberty, Barbie Dolls, American Gothic, The Buffalo Nickel, Uncle Sam, telling us some background about the well-known symbols. For each symbol, the writer deals with who the creator was, how the symbol was created, when and how it was accepted.

The Statue of Liberty is a monument built to celebrate the US independence and the France-America alliance. Holding a torch high, the statue expresses welcome to people who have affection for peace and liberty. Inspired by a German doll, Ruth designed her American version of dolls called Barbie. With long limbs and an exaggerated breast size, Barbie is shapely and beautiful. Guided by artistic theories and inspired by the Gothic building style, Wood created the portrait showing the solemn pride of American farmers. Unlike other coins in the US, the buffalo nickel honored a pair of connected tragedies, the destruction of both buffalo herds and American Indians. The story of Uncle Sam evolves from a man who inspected meat for the US Army during the war to liberate the American colonies. There are many versions of Uncle Sam’s portrait, but the most famous is in the recruiting poster, in which he is a tall man with a white beard on his chin.

Units Graceful Hands

Summary:

The story deals with a doctor’s view of a terminally-ill grandmother as a terrible-looking lady with graceful hands from the outset but a considerate lady with graceful heart and mind in the end. The passage is a narration presented in the chronological order as a whole, which can be divided into several parts accordingly. The author’s method is to state an impression in the writing first and then p resent the details, which help to create that impression.

Unit6 How to Prepare for Earthquakes Summary:

The essay focuses on the central theme: earthquake prediction, prevention and preparation. Since earthquakes may cause great destruction, we need to learn how to detect them early. To predict when an earthquake is going to happen and how bad it will be, Japan scientists have wired the Earth and sea to detect movements; Chinese people have traditionally watched animals and plants for warning signs of earthquakes. Experimental data show that the amount of radon (Rn) in the water under the surface of the Earth waxes before an earthquake. To prevent the great destruction of property caused by earthquakes, the architects build new structures with the durable I-joint, designing columns and horizontal beams of equal strength, making new houses with relatively light roofs and enclosing strong walls and concrete pillars for highway bridges in street. To prepare for the possibility of a great earthquake, the necessary measures should be taken against the destruction of an earthquake. It is advisable to check and reinforce their homes regularly. And remember to keep survival supplies at home and at work for the occurrence of an earthquake, have some proper tools ready at hand in case of an earthquake, place heavy objects in low positions, attach cupboards and cabinets to walls, and so on. All these precautions can make a great difference in saving lives and preventing the loss of homes.

Unit9 Premarital Agreements

Summary

This passage focuses on one social phenomenon: prenups or premarital agreements, which tells us what prenups are, who want prenups, the points to be taken care of before signing prenups and finally a general evaluation of prenups. Premarital agreements are designed to address the division of financial assets when a couple ends their marriage and prenups are negotiated by lawyers for the prospective spouse and signed before a marriage ceremony. There are four types of people who need to have prenups before a marriage: people who will be involved in great economic consequences in a divorce and those who want to remarry; people who have accumulated considerable wealth, have already been stung once, and want to reduce their exposure to future problems; people who want to shield assets to be passes on to children and grandchildren; people who have, or in line for, great inherited wealth or a family business, especially whose future partner has little or nothing at all. There are some points to be taken care of regarding prenups: proper guidelines are necessary; a lawyer is required to write the document; do not use the same lawyer as your future spouse does; do not sign a prenup under pressure; a dispute over prenups could happen if a couple decides to divorce while living abroad or with different passports; prenups are business agreements. Prenups sometimes may help save a couple from a terrible marriage and prenups sometimes prove to be unnecessary to some happy marriages.

Unit 1

The fight against air pollution

With the rapid development of the economy in the world. Air pollution has become a serious problem in recent years. But why is there such a phenonmenon?

There are several causes contributing to this phenonmenon. first of all, is the chemical noxious gases emission. We all know that there are a lot of of factories around the world, they are actually emitting such gases everyday. The second one is the sharp decrease of the forests. Forest is very important to our Eco-system, it can adjust the heat and balance the air. The third one is the urbanization. People tend to stay in the city where is actually an abnormal Eco-system. Many cities do not have a complete system of controlling the air pollution.

But how to solve such problems? From my point of view, First of all is to control the emission of noxious gases. A set of necessary standards is required. It is not allowed to emit some particular gases until they have been transferred to another kind of chemical substance that is harmless to environment. Second one is planting more trees. We have cut down a lot of trees. It does have side effect on the quality of air. By planting more trees, many environment problems can be solved rather than air poll.

Unit4

The life of Charlie Chapin

To a failure, hardship is an excuse; To a success, hardship is great fortune. Stagestruck Charlie Chaplin plodding all the way.

Charlie Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889 in London. Her father was an entertainer and although not one of the big names, he was doing very well. Her mother Hannah was also an entertainer. A wonderful mimic, she had a sweet, charming voice. While they were by no means rich, the music hall provided the Chaplins with a comfortable living.

In 1910, when Karno set off on his yearly American tour, "One of the best pantomime artists ever seen here." They had reached Philadelphia when a telegram arrived and he was being offered the chance to replace a star in the Keystone film company.

Christmas Eve, 1977 came and the house was brimming with children and grandchildren. Charlie was settled in his room, they left the door open so that he could share in the sounds of excitement and happiness that ran through the house.

Unit6

Key Steps in Career Planning

The following is a simple and brief overview of purposeful career planning. The steps mainly come from what I learned from practicing what I learned while working as a university career counselor. There are five steps to active career planning.

Self Assessment, self assessment revolves around the thoughtful consideration, reflection, and evaluation of your interests, personality characteristics, values, and skills through a variety of methods, such as the use of a whole host of career-related tools and instruments.

Exploration and Research, the career planning component consisting of exploration and research is all about being in information gathering mode. This is the time to explore, collect, and organize all available (and pursue not-so-available) resources to eventually begin analyzing them to see what top options arise.

Decision Making, the decision-making step of the career planning process is when you put all the pieces of information about yourself and your carefully collected career information together as best as possible to produce a list of career-related goals and options.

Taking Actions, taking action is one of those things that’s easier said than done. This stage is about litera lly being proactive with your career plans and following through with what you’ve decided on doing.

Evaluation, after you have made your career-related decision(s) and identified your goals, keep in mind that many of the folks who achieve career success are the ones who continually evaluate and assess their status. They keep track of their career progress throughout their lifetime.

Does this sound simple to any of you? Sort of like figuring out what kind of car to buy where you think about what make and model represents you and your needs the best and then you do the research to figure out how to get the best price? If it does, then that’s great. But for others of us, figuring out what car to buy can be awfully stressful, let alone trying to figure out a college major or a solid career direction.

By the way, if you’re interested in trying out something like these career planning steps in a more structured or supportive environment, you might consider enrolling in a career planning course or hiring a career counselor.

Unit 9

Bad habits can ruin your health

As we all know ,in the modern world, people have gained an increasing awareness of the great importance of health.Being born with a healthy body matters a lot whether we will live a happy life.Heath is so precious that we should feel fortunate to get a good start in life with a healthy body. However, what matters most under our nose is what we usually ignored, such as our heath. As many of us have paid much less attention to our exposure to all kinds of temptations, once we come across them, more often than not,we can't help to abandon ourselves in them.Drinking coffee is a common behavior in American's life while increasingly being a fashionable trend in China.Having a coffee drinking properly can refresh our minds and let us get to work more efficiently, but may also have bad effects on our health if doing it excessively.Another two

examples are smoking and excessive drinking.Smoking too much often lead to lung cancer ,which may disturb others and affect others' health as well, while excessive drinking often cause too much harm to your liver.

Struggling for a better life can make sense to everybody. But if you work too hard to have meals in time and skip your breakfast frequently, the workload may leave a burden to your health and drain your energy slowly, which will cause your breakdown.

What's more, having bad eating habits can also lead to healthy problems.A typical example is that eating too much may have bad bearing on your digestive system and gain your weight as well.

Unit1 Americans believe no one stands still. If you are not moving ahead, you are falling behind. This attitude results in a nation of people committed to researching, experimenting and exploring. Time is one of the two elements that Americans save carefully, the other being labor. "We are slaves to nothing but the clock,” it has been said. Time is treated as if it were something almost real. We budget it, save it, waste it, steal it, kill it, cut it, account for it; we also charge for it. It is a precious resource. Many people have a rather acute sense of the shortness of each lifetime. Once the sands have run out of a person’s hourglass, they cannot be replaced. We want every minute to count. A foreigner’s first impression of the U.S. is li kely to be that everyone is in a rush -- often under pressure. City people always appear to be hurrying to get where they are going, restlessly seeking attention in a store, or elbowing others as they try to complete their shopping. Racing through daytime meals is part of the pace

III. 1. rewarding 2. communicate 3. access 4. embarrassing 5. positive 6. commitment 7. virtual 8. benefits 9. minimum 10. opportunities IV. 1. up 2. into 3. from 4. with 5. to 6. up 7. of 8. in 9. for 10.with V. 1.G 2.B 3.E 4.I 5.H 6.K 7.M 8.O 9.F 10.C Sentence Structure VI. 1.

unit1 When I think of people in this world who have really made a difference, I think of my parents. They were truly saints among ordinary people. I was one of the ten children my parents adopted. They rescued(挽救)each of us from a life of poverty(贫穷) and loneliness(孤独). They were hardly able to restrain(克制)themselves from bringing home more children to care for. If they had had the resources(资源)they certainly would have. Most people do not realize how much they appreciated (感激) someone until they pass away(大多数人都不知道他们有多么感激一个人,直到那个人去世). My sisters and brothers and I did not want this to happen before we uttered(说)the words "Thank you" to our parents(我的妹妹和弟弟和我都不想在我们对父母说谢谢你之前让这件事发生). Although we have all grown up and scattered(散落) about the country, we got back together to thank our parents. My brother Tom undertook(从事,承担)the task of organizing the event. Every Friday night, Mom and Dad have had the ham dinner special at the same restaurant for the last twenty years. That is where we waited without their knowing. When we first caught a glimpse(瞥一眼) of them coming across the street, we all hid underneath(在…之下) a big table. When they entered, we leapt(跳出来) out and shouted, "Thank you, Mom and Dad." My brother Tom presented (提供)them with a card(办法,手段,妙计)and we all hugged(拥抱). My Dad pretended(假装) that he had known we were under the table all along. 1.

举例来说,杂货店的指示牌会把他们引向stationary(静止处),虽然便笺本、相册、和笔记本等真正的stationery(文具用品)并没有被钉在那儿。朋友和亲人常宣称They've just ate。实际上,他们应该说They've just eaten。

Ink and wash painting, one of the unique traditional art forms of China, is representative of Chinese painting. It began around the time of the Tang Dynasty, and then prospered in the Song and Yuan dynasties. With a history of over one thousand years, it has experienced constant development, improvement and perfection. The tools and materials used to create ink and wash painting, i.e, brushes, rice paper, and ink, are characteristic of Chinese culture and closely related to the features of the paintings . For example, the mixing of water and ink creates different shades of dryness, wetness, thickness and thinness. The integration and infiltration of water, ink, and rice paper enables such paintings to convey rich images, and hence to achieve unique aesthetic effects. Ink and wash painting holds a high status in the history of Chinese painting, and it is even regarded as the criterion to evaluate the artistic level of Oriental paintings.
