Passage Two

St. Patrick's Day (March 17) is one of the most important holidays in Ireland. People will wear green shirts, ties, and hair ribbons. Some even dye their hair green because they believe that on that day the color brings them good luck.

On St. Patrick's Day, the Irish around the world traditionally attend church in the morning and have some celebrations in the afternoon. They dance, drink, parade, and feast. A traditional meal includes meat, cabbage and a special Irish beer called Guinness.

St. Patrick's Day is a religious holiday that can be traced back more than one thousand years ago, and it is related to a boy named St. Patrick who became an Irish saint when he grew up.

He was born to a wealthy family in Wales around the year 385 AD. But when he was sixteen, a band of raiders (劫掠者)took him as a slave to what is now the neighboring island of Ireland.

Patrick lived there for several years. He was so lonely and afraid that he took solace in religion and became a faithful Christian. Later, he returned to Ireland as a missionary, traveling from village to village and talking about his faith. He explained to people the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit as each of the leaves of a shamrock. There were three leaves, yet they were one plant. From then on, the shamrock, a small plant that grew wild around Ireland, has been a symbol of Ireland and because of it, green is associated with St. Patrick's Day.

D)People respect St. Patrick and love him.

30.What is the passage about?

C) St. Patrick's life. D) The history of St. Patrick's Day.

Passage Three

Parents are the scribes of their children's stories and by reflecting these stories, children learn who they are. Children are very aware of all the messages we give them, both verbal and non-verbal. Take a day and listen to yourself and what you say to your child. Are you focusing only on what you find them doing "wrong"? If you find yourself focusing on the negative ——stop! Take a break and see if you can find a more positive way to address the "problem". In this way you will be able to include your child in making a plan that works. I always like to ask the child "what do you think will work?" Often their suggestions are better than we could even invent ourselves.

Too many "no's" can discourage young children from exploring and investigating their environment, which is one of their primary ways of learning. How many "No, stop, don,ts!^, do you hear yourself saying in a day? Take a minute to imagine this scenario: You are driving across town at rush hour. There are already the usual stoplights and traffic that you expect, but every other block, there is a new stop sign that was never there before. You get stopped over and over on your way to your goal. How do you feel? This is what it can be like for a small child on a daily basis.

When your child has been told "no" repeatedly and is understandably in a disagreeable mood, you can almost be sure that another request from you won't be positively received. Instead, think how you might be able to engage your child in a positive way that will in effect help him be more cooperative.

Ask yourself in each instance of misbehavior, “How can I help my child find an alternative way of behaving without reinforcing the behavior I would like to see stopped or changed?" How can I turn this "no" into a "yes"? One important thing to remember is that if you want your child to change you must be willing to change as well. Your child is doing the best at that point in time to get his needs met. Help him learn more successful ways by taking the time to really listen to his feelings and perhaps even find a way to mutual satisfaction, together.

31.The underlined word "scribe" in Paragraph 1 probably refers to the persons who.

A)takes care of others

B)writes down the stories or events so as to keep a record

C)are very cooperative

D)are very successful

32.As mentioned in Paragraph 1, the writer always likes to ask the children "What do you think will work?"

because he thinks.

A)it is better to find a more positive way to address a problem

B)he can give the children good suggestions

C)the children will be irritated

D)this will correct the children's misbehaviors

33.The scenario mentioned in Paragraph 2 mainly suggests that.

A)children should behave well

B)parents should criticize their children when they have misbehaved

C)parents should listen to their children

D)parents shouldn't discourage children from exploring and investigating

34.According to the passage, what is the possible situation that leads to children's doing their best?

A) When they behave badly. B) When their parents criticize them.

C) When their needs are met. D) When they stay with their parents.

35.The most possible title for the passage is.

A) Understanding Your Children B) The Power of "Yes"

C) Parents-Children Relationship D) Mutual Satisfaction

Passage Four

Lovebirds. Thafs what all our friends called us when we first married.

I guess Don and I deserved it. Money was tight. Sometimes we'd have to save up days just for an ice cream cone. Still, our tiny apartment seemed like paradise. Love does that, you know.

The more we heard the term "lovebirds", the more we thought about birds. One day we started saving up for a couple of lovebirds of our own. We knew we couldn't afford to buy both birds and a nice cage, so in his spare moments, Don made the cage himself.

We put our cage in front of a shaded window. Then we waited until our little saving was full of bills and spare change. With that money we "adopted" a pair of canaries from our local pet store, a male and a female, and named them Sunshine and Snowball.

Time passed, and when our young lovebirds finally seemed mature enough to start a family of their own, we went ahead and prepared a nest area and lots of nesting material for them. Snowball was a very exacting wife in designing and decorating their nest just so, while Sunshine, filled with love, bent over backward to put everything just where she ordered.

Then one day an egg appeared. How they sang! And a few weeks later when a tiny chick hatched, their happiness seemed to know no bounds. I don't know how it happened, but that baby bird was bright orange. So right off we named him Punkinhead.

The sunny days passed. How proud all of us were when our baby bird ran out of the nest onto a real grown-up perch!

Then one day, Punkinhead suddenly fell head down to the bottom of the cage. The tiny orange bird just lay there, both parents and I rushed to his rescue.

But he was dead. Just like that. Whether he'd had a heart attack before he fell or broke his neck in the fall, I'll never know. But Punkinhead was gone.

The mother bird refused to let either Sunshine or me get near that little body. Instead of the joyful melodies I usually heard from Snowball, now she gave only the most heartbreaking cries and moans. Her

heart, joy and will seemed completely melted by her sorrow.

Poor Sunshine didn't know what to do. He kept trying to push Snowball away from her sad situation, but she refused to move. Instead, over and over she kept trying to wake up her beloved child.

Finally Sunshine seemed to work out a plan. He convinced her to fly up and eat some seeds every so often, while he stood duty in her place. Then each time she left, he'd quietly place one piece of straw over Punkinhead5s body. Just one. But in a few days, piece by piece, it was completely covered over.

At first Snowball seemed panic when she looked around, but she didn't try to uncover the chick. Instead, she flew up to her normal place and stayed there. Then I was able to quietly reach in and remove the little body.

After that, Sunshine spent all his time comforting Snowball. Eventually she started making normal sounds, and then one day, her sorrow finally melted and she sang again. I don't know if Snowball ever realized the quiet labor of love and healing Sunshine had done for her. But they remained devoted for as long as they both lived. Love does that, you know.

36.The title of the passage is "When Snowball Melted,,. What does the title mean?

A.The increasing temperature made the snowball melt.

B.The bird called Snowball was too sad for her kid's death so she became weaker and weaker.

C.The grief born by the bird called Snowball for the death of her kid was dissolved by her

husband's love.

D.The bird called Snowball was loved by her husband so it seemed like a snowball was melted.

37.Why did "our tiny apartment seemed like paradise" even though we were poor?

A.Because we love our tiny apartment.

B.Because the tiny apartment housed a couple in love.

C.Because we kept two birds in love in the tiny apartment.

D.Because our tiny apartment was clean and cozy.

38.In paragraph 4, why does the author use "'adopted' a pair of canaries from our local pet store^, instead

of the word "buy"?

A.“Adopted" is used here to show that the birds are deserted by the store so the couple adopted them.

B."Adopted" is used here to show the couple's love for the birds, while the word "buy" seemed to be

cold and emotionless.

C."Adopted" is used here to show that nobody wanted the birds so the couple were the only one who

bought them.

D.there is no special reason why "adopted" is used here.

39.What is the cause of Punkinhead's death?

A.He'd had a heart attack before he fell.

B.He broke his neck in the fall.

C.He was attacked by a cat.

D.the cause of Punkinhead's death is unknown.

40.Which of the following things were NOT what Sunshine did to comfort Snowball after the death of

their kid?

A.He kept trying to push Snowball away from her sad situation.

B.He flew up to her normal place and stayed there.

C.H e convinced her to fly up and eat some seeds every so often, while he stood duty in her place.

D.each time she left, he'd quietly place one piece of straw over Punkinhead9s body.
