阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。

A

The history of English is conventionally,if perhaps too neatly, divided into three periods usually called Old English (or Anglo-Saxon),Middle English and Modern English. The earliest period begins with the migration of certain Germanic tribes from the continent to Britain in the fifth century A.D.,though no records of their language survived from before the seventh century, and it continued until the end of the eleventh century or a bit later.By that time Latin,Old Norse (the language of the Viking invaders),and especially the Anglo-Norman French of the dominant class after the Norman Conquest in 1,066 had begun to have an important impact on the lexicon, and the well-developed inflectional system that typifies the grammar of Old English had begun to break down.

The period of Middle English extends roughly from the twelfth century to the fifteenth. The influence of French (and Latin, often by way of French) upon the lexicon continued throughout this period, the loss of some inflections and the reduction of others (often to a final unstressed vowel spelled e) accelerated (加速),and many changes took place within the phonological and grammatical systems of the language.A typical prose passage, especially one from the later part of the period, will not have such a foreign look to us as Aelfric?s prose has.

All the same, the number of inflections for nouns, adjectives and verbs has been greatly reduced, and in most respects Mandeville is closer to Modern than to Old English.

56.When did the Anglo-Norman French begin to impact Old English?

A.In 1,066.

B.In the seventh century.

C.In the fifth century.

D.In the twelfth century.

57.How long did the period of Middle English last?

A.About three centuries.

B.About four centuries.

C.Twelve centuries.

D.Fifteen centuries.

58.What does the underlined word “impact” mean according to the passage?

A.Influence. B.Advantage.

C.Shortcoming. D.Loss.

59.For which the number of inflections has been greatly reduced?Which is not included?

A.Nouns B.Adjectives

C.Verbs D.Grammar

60.According to the passage, what may the author tell us next?

A.Old English. B.Anglo-Saxon.

C.Middle English. D.Modern English.

Love doesn?t just make you feel good—it can fight disease and lower stress. Here?s how.

Who doesn?t love being in love?A true lover listens to you complain about work, lets you have that last slice of pizza, and usually remembers to take out the rubbish. And he always thinks you?re beautiful, even in thermal underwear and bunny slippers.Scientists have long been eager to prove that love gives us health benefits, too.Researchers can?t say for sure that romance (浪漫) beats family affection or warm friendships when it comes to health. But they are focusing on how close relatives, and good relationships make us stronger, with health gains that range from faster healing and better control over severe illnesses to living longer.

The benefits of love are obvious and measurable.A study last year from the University of Pittsburgh found that women in good marriages have a much lower risk of cardiovascular disease than those in high-stress relationships. The National Longitudinal Mortality Study, which has been following more than a million subjects since 1979,shows that married people live longer, have fewer heart attacks and lower cancer rates, and even get pneumonia less frequently than singles. And a new study from the University of Iowa found that cancer patients with a strong sense of connection to others and satisfying relationships had stronger “natural killer” cell activity at the tumor (肿瘤) than those ________.(These desirable white blood cells kill cancerous cells as part of the body?s immune system.)

Some_experts_think_it_won?t_be_long_before_doctors_prescribe_a_happy_marriage,romantic_dates,and_caring_communication_in_addition_to_plenty_of_rest.If that sounds like a happy prescription, here are ways to make the emerging evidence translate into real-life advice.

It can be difficult to finish a small talk. The simplest strategy is to politely announce when you are going to step out of the dialogue, such as,“Well,I?d better get back to study.” or “Time for me to do my homework.”

If someone else talks too long, you can get yourself away from the conversation in the same way.In a group talking, you can say,“It?s been nice speaking with you.I just noticed the time and I really need to speak with my deskmate before I leave.”

If a talkative person interrupts your study with a small talk, you can suggest another time for the conversation. You can say,“I?d like to talk more with you,but my homework is due at noon,” or “You?ve caught me at a bad time. Why don?t we have a small talk after school?”

One of the Summer’s Best Blockbusters,10 July,2009

Author:Vince27 from Canada

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is the sixth movie in the Harry Potter series, and it is the greatest one yet. The movie mixes comedy, romance, drama, and adventures into one,and makes it so marvelous and fun to watch. The acting in this film is more mature and better in quality than in the earlier ones. The trio, Emma Watson,Rupert Grint, and Daniel Radcliffe are amazing in their roles and pull them off well. David Yates gives his best directing in his career to date, and does an amazing job of telling the storyline of J.K. Rowling?s fantastic book. The visual effects are so well done and look so real. Although the movie has cut out many things in the book, it is still a great film that most people will enjoy!

Key Points Missing! 12 July, 2009

Author:zvette929 from the United States

If you love the series like I do,you will know that in every movie they have to cut parts of the book out. For those that have not read the book this movie will impress. I understand the need to cut the movie in order to fit it into a realistic time frame. In doing so, it seems as if they cut key parts in order to allow for more comedy. They also cut out a large action scene at the end of the movie. Another problem is, although there is not as much violence as previous movies the overall film includes adult content that in my opinion warrants the PG 13 rating. Do not misunderstand me. I recommend seeing the movie as it is enjoyable.

____________,15 July, 2009

Author:cernan from the United States

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is a big challenging novel to adapt to the big screen. Initially I had low expectations for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, but after seeing the movie, I think it is the best in the series and the adaptation is a great success. When you?re adapting a 600 page book into a two and a half hour film,it?s inevitable that certain things will get cut.

The Best Book...The Worst Movie!19 July,2009

Author:infernodx from the United Kingdom

This film is so awful compared to the book that I can?t believe people love it. The book is a million times better and I?m hugely disappointed. They have added poor scenes and taken away integral parts of the book. Huge parts of the story have been missed. Pointless scenes have been added to make it appeal to a wider audience.I feel it totally unnecessary as Harry Potter appeals to probably the widest audience of any book. If I were J.K. Rowling I would have asked the producers some serious questions.

57.All the four persons mention that ________.

A.Vince27. B.Infernodx.

B.a film rated PG-13 is not suitable for children under 13

C.zvette929 do esn?t think the movie is worth seeing

On the road with friends

I picked up my two best friends and we were off on a road trip.I had just returned to America from a year abroad in China. So,naturally I wanted to take a trip to Canada.

Montreal, the second largest city in Canada,is a four-hour drive from my home in New Hampshire.

We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time I had ever driven across an international border. We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations.

After dropping off our bags at our hotel,we were immediately walking down the famous St.Catherine?s street. While we walked two things surprised us:how cold it was and how well everyone dressed. The streets of Montreal are like a fashion show. Both men and women look like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine.

All of that fashion has to keep them warm since Montreal is so https://www.wendangku.net/doc/af7700161.html,st year it broke the record for snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a small diner because we wanted to order Poutine,a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy (肉汁).It is delicious.

However,we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest French-speaking city in the world. But since the rest of Canada speaks English, plenty of people were there to help.

We spent the rest of the weekend going to the historical churches and monuments in Montreal. But at night we?d head to the very modern dance clubs and bars.Montreal is a city that sits between the past and the future and the traveler can choose whichever direction he wants to go in.

There are many differences between America and China. The biggest difference is traffic rules. In America there are too much more cars than in China. But there are much fewer traffic jams and accidents in America than in China. We hardly see traffic police in the street, but all cars obey strictly traffic rules, and people hardly find that a car does not obey traffic rules in the street.

About American traffic rules, there are many better terms, such as:

1.Stop line:There are stop lines in all crossing without traffic light (some have two stop lines and others have four stop lines). All cars must stop while meeting the stop line.

2.Traffic light:There is traffic light in the crossing of the road.Cars may almost turn every direction. The traffic light can give signal step by step including u-turn.There is a kind of middle lane of turning left. When a car wants to turn left in the road,he may enter into the middle lane of turning left and give a signal of turning left. When he thinks being safe,he may turn left.In many conditions the order of passing is also given very specifically. If people want to change lane or turn, they must look behind and think being safe.Only so,they may do it.

3.Specific item:Such as parking, there are three kinds of lines (their colors are white, blue or red) in the roadside.Every line may park different kinds of cars. There are many streets in some residential areas, and there is a kind of rule that any car cannot park at any time or any period time.In every parking, there are some special positions for invalid people.

4.About the priority of passenger and car:At any case, passengers have the priority to cars. And only after passengers have passed the road and gotten the top of sidestep, cars may go ahead.

In general, traffic rules of America are very specific, convenient, safe and humanizing.

71.Which of the following is NOT the reason why we can hardly see traffic police in the street in American?

A.Traffic police are not very necessary because few cars break traffic rules.

B.The traffic is very clear and there are few traffic jams and accidents in the street.

D.The effective traffic rules play an important part in the road safety.

B.It is very safe to drive there.

C.It is very convenient for the traffic police to find the cars that break the rules.

D.The cars that want to turn left can easily give a signal of turning left.

73.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

B. In America, all cars in the crossing must stop when they meet the stop line.

C.In America, any car cannot park in the streets in some residential areas.

English can open up new worlds to you.Through English you can read the writings of great thinkers in history.Through English you can learn about new development in science and technology. And through English you can read the works of many great writers, such as Shakespeare,Dickens and Mark Twain. However, learning English well is not easy.Success comes only to those who work hard and know the right way to study. Here are a few suggestions:

Learning a foreign language is learning how to use a tool or a weapon. It is different from studying history or maths. You must know the language. You must use the language, not just know about the language.Always keep this in mind.

Be sure to learn your fundamentals well.Learn the English sounds and intonation, the rules of grammar, how to use the words and phrases.Fundamentals_may_not_be_so_interesting_but_they

_are_sure_important.

To learn English is not just remembering a lot of rules and words. It is learning to read and write,to speak and listen in the language.________,language is for people to get their ideas across to other people. As soon as they can, students should read stories in English, listen to English over the radio or TV,speak to their friends or classmates in English and keep a diary in English. This is using the language, doing things in the language and making language learning more meaningful.

Many students only like to learn new things. They don?t like to spend time on things they have already learned. They don?t realize that knowing something does not mean they can use it.Every student should remember this:English can be a key to a new world, but you must know how to use it.

Dear Zhang Hua,

Long time no see!I miss you very much. Now I am so excited that I can?t wait to share with you an unforgettable experience.I gave my first lesson today, which left me a deep impression.

Seeing a young teacher enter the classroom,my students began to make more noise.I stood on the platform, feeling embarrassed and not knowing what to do.Then I realized something must be done.I asked the kids whether they liked English songs. After taking a deep breath,I sang a song I had practised many times. To my surprise, all the kids were concentrating on my class later on.

How delighted I am now!Actually, whatever happens,we must stay calm first and then find a wise solution.Looking forward to your reply.

Sitting across from a German couple and a Chinese mother and her child,we were waiting at the Guilin airport for our delayed flight to Shanghai. In this last week of our travel-study tour,my husband and I were savoring this short break by reading.

I tuned out the languages I couldn?t understand. But it was an American accent that pulled my attention from my book.It also pulled the attention of three rows of people seated around us as the American barked,“Coming through!Coming through!”

At the same time,an oversized man pulling an oversized carry-on passed our row.His wheeled bag caught the German man?s feet.Turning to see what snagged his luggage, the American bellower yanked his bag so hard that it crossed over the man?s feet.It was then that my horror struck. There was no “I?m sorry”,no “Excuse me” and no “Pardon me” coming from this countryman of mine.

While this wasn?t the first or last incident where I sighted discourteous,ill-mannered,rude Americans in China, each produced similar feelings.First,I was embarrassed that someone from my country was creating a negative impression of Americans. My second reaction was a desire to apologize.I wanted to explain to the Chinese woman and her child, the German couple next to them, and everyone nearby that this was not typical American behavior.I wanted them to know “we” were all not like that.

I never got to explain,or to https://www.wendangku.net/doc/af7700161.html,nguage differences made that option impossible, and rational thinking made it inappropriate. But it turned out not to be a need. The German man caught my eyes with a bit of head-shaking,smiling and eye rolling, which I returned, and it was clear that he knew we were Americans and was expressing that there was “no need” to apologize for “universal idiot behavior”.

高中英语选修6 Unit 1 A SHORT HISTORY OF WESTERN PAINTING Art is influenced by the customs and faith of a people. Styles in Western art have changed many times. As there are so many different styles of Western art, it would be impossible to describe all of them in such a short text. Consequently, this text will describe only the most important ones. Starting from the sixth century AD. The Middle Ages(5th to the 15th century AD) During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes. A conventional artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people as they really were. A typical picture at this time was full of religious symbols, which created a feeling of respect and love for God. But it was evident that ideas were changing in the 13th century when painters like Giotto di Bondone began to paint religious scenes in a more realistic way. The Renaissance(15th to 16th century) During the Renaissance, new ideas and values gradually replaced those held in the Middle Ages. People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a more humanistic attitude to life. At the same time painters returned to classical Roman and Greek ideas about art. They tried to paint people and nature as they really were. Rich people wanted to possess their own paintings, so they could decorate their superb palaces and great houses. They paid famous artists to paint pictures of themselves, their houses and possessions as well as their activities and achievements. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how to draw things in perspective. This technique was first used by Masaccio in 1428. When people first saw his paintings, they were convinced that they were looking through a hole in a wall at a real scene. If the rules of perspective had not been discovered, no one would have been able to paint such realistic pictures. By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper. Without the new paints and the new technique, we would not be able to see the many great masterpieces for which this period is famous. Impressionism(late 19h to early 20th century) In the late 19th century, Europe changed a great deal, from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial one. Many people moved from the countryside to the new cities. There were many new inventions and social changes also led to new painting styles. Among the painters who broke away from the traditional style of painting were the Impressionists, who lived and worked in Paris. The Impressionists were the first painters to work outdoors. They were eager to show how light and shadow fell on objects at different times of day. However, because natural light changes so quickly, the Impressionists had to paint quickly. Their paintings were not as detailed as those of earlier painters. At first, many people disliked this style of painting and became very angry about it. They said that the painters were careless and their paintings were ridiculous. Modern Art(29th century to today) At the time they were created, the Impressionist paintings were controversial, but today they are accepted as the beginning of what we call "modern art". This is because the
