In this section there are five passages followed by a total of 20 multiple-choice questions. Read the passages and then write your answers on your answer sheet.

Passage 1

Groslier had proposed that the water management system at Angkor had been devised to remedy the uncertainties of the monsoon and particularly the length of the dry season. He lacked, however, any measure for quite how ?uncertain‘ the monsoon would have been during the 500 years of Angkor‘s rise and fall;presumably he drew on his own experience of SE Asia with regard to how the intensity and duration of rainfall in one year can be quite different to that of the next. It was not until 2009 that the first measure of monsoon uncertainty for the Angkor period was devised, this coming from a study of tree rings from 1,000-year-old cypress trees. This showed not only that Groslier was correct to suppose a considerable degree of climate uncertainty throughout the Angkor period, but also that this became particularly marked in the middle to late 14th and early 15th centuries: the dramatic swings between intense drought and heavy rainfall appears to have caused an Angkor demise.

Growing in the highlands of Vietnam are some rare and especially old cypress trees, Fokienia hodginsii. Professor Brendan Buckley from Columbia University and his colleagues searched these out and took cores through their trunks to get a sample of the tree rings from throughout the period of their growth. Each tree ring records one year of growth and in general terms its width records how much water was available. Buckley and his colleagues were able to produce a 759-year-long sequence for

between 1250 and 2008, recording the variation in the intensity of the monsoon – just the type of data that Groslier would have loved to have seen.

This record showed that the monsoon got weaker – that is, there was less rain –in the middle to late 14th century, with some periods of sustained drought. Shorter periods of more severe drought occurred in the early 15th century, with the single driest year of the whole record being in 1403. But what is especially important is that during this period of the middle to late 14th and early 15th centuries, the tree rings also record some of the wettest years, the most intense monsoon. So in the context of an overall decline in rainfall, the period during which Angkor is known to have declined and then become effectively abandoned was one with the highest degree of rainfall variation –years of drought interspersed with years of intense rain.

1. Before the year 2009, ___________

A. Groslier had proved the uncertainties of the monsoon.

B. Groslier had measured the uncertainties of the monsoon.

C. The rainfall was intense in Southeast Asia.

D. Groslier thought the monsoon had been uncertain based on his own experience.

2. A study of tree rings from 1,000-year-old cypress trees was conducted ____.

A. to prove that Groslier was wrong.

B. to measure the monsoon uncertainty for the Angkor period.

C. to show climate uncertainty in the middle to late 14th and early 15th centuries.

D. to prove the dramatic swings between intense drought and heavy

rainfall.

3. Which statement is correct about Fokienia hodginsii?

A. They are very common and especially old cypress trees.

B. The length of each tree ring records how much water was available.

C. The 759-year-long sequence was all the information Groslier had needed.

D. They provided the very data to prove Groslier‘s belief.

4. In the early1400s, ______

A. the most severe drought occurred, causing the fall of Angkor.

B. Angkor is known to have declined and then become effectively abandoned.

C. the tree rings also record some of the wettest years.

D. the least rainfall was recorded in 1403.

5. From the whole passage, it can be inferred that ______

A. Rainfall changes caused the fall of Angkor.

B. Brendan Buckley did not believe in Groslier at all.

C. Cypress trees are important to sustain Angkor.

D. Rainfall was important for cypress trees.

Passage 2

The increase in the margin rate from 50% to 70% was not an attempt to stem any rampant speculation on the part of the public—actually the market seemed technically quite strong, with public participation essentially dignified—but rather an attempt by the Federal Reserve Board to preserve the sound underpinnings that existed in the market. Naturally, such a move had a momentarily chilling effect upon prices but if the FRB had been preoccupied with undue speculation, the increase might have been to the 80% or even 90% level. Such an increase in the margin rate is a confirmation of a strong stock market and since 19…, such increases have resulted in interim market highs over twelve months later.Obviously, there could be no guarantee that this would once again be the case, but if history is any guideline—and if business and corporate earnings were to continue on the same course—continued optimism over the outlook for the stock market would seem more prudent than pessimism.

The margin increase underscored the good rise that stocks had enjoyed for the previous year—and the fact that a 50% rate was maintained as long as it was pointed up the fact that the rise was mainly conservative in that it was concentrated in the blue chips for the most part.In past Investment Letters we have voiced the thought that specialty stocks could outperform the general market from this point. We continue to believe that this could be the case. For example, steel stocks tend to sell at certain fixed price/earnings ratios.Below a certain ratio they are considered good value—above a certain ratio, overpriced. If a company produces a unique product it is far more difficult for market analysis to place a numerical ratio upon the company‘s earnings. We have also

contended in the past Letters that the stock market reflects mass psychology as well as the business outlook. When investors—both the public and the institutions—are nervous and pessimistic they definitely hesitate to buy stocks: they seek low price/earnings multiples and high yields. These same investors—when they are in an optimistic frame of mind—become for less preoccupied with yields and more willing to pay a premium (high p/e multiples) for accelerated growth. If the public‘s attitude towards the auto industry is any measure, then this period seems to have been one of optimism.

6. The title that best expresses the ideas of this passage is __________

A. A Time to Sell Stock.

B. A Strong Stock Market

C. Raising the Margin Rate

D. Price/earnings Ratio in Steel

7. When investors are pessimistic what do they do?

A. They look to the FRB for help.

B. They buy steel

C. They buy automobile stocks.

D. They look for high yields.

8. Why does the writer believe that specialty stocks could outperform the general market?

A. Because analysis have difficulty in deciding upon a fixed price/earnings ratio.

B. Because the activity had been limited to blue chips.

C. Because the rise was conservative.

D. Because of the FRB action.

9. When investors are optimistic, what do they do?

A. They look for accelerated growth.

B. They buy specialty stocks.

C. They look for high yields.

D. They are more prudent.

Passage 3

There must be few questions on which responsible opinion is so utterly divided as on that of how much sleep we ought to have. There are some who think we can leave the body to regulate these matters for itself. ―The answer is easy,‖ says Dr. A. Burton. ―With the right amount of sleep you should wake up fresh and alert five minutes before the alarm rings.‖ If he is right many people must be under sleeping, including myself. But we must remember that some people have a greater inertia than others. This is not meant rudely. They switch on slowly, and they are reluctant to switch off. They are alert at bedtime and sleepy when it is time to get up, and this may have nothing to do with how fatigued their bodies are, or how much sleep they must take to lose their fatigue.

Other people feel sure that the present trend is towards too little sleep. To quote one medical opinion, thousands of people drift through life suffering from the effects of too little sleep; the reason is not that they can‘t sleep. Like advancing colonists, we do seem to be grasping ever more of the land of sleep for our waking needs, pushing the boundary back and reaching, apparently, for a point in our evolution where we will sleep no more. This in itself, of course, need not be a bad thing. What could be disastrous, however, is that we should press too quickly towards this goal, sacrificing sleep only to gain more time in which to jeopardize our civilization by actions and decisions made weak by fatigue. Then, to complete the picture, there are those who believe that most people are persuaded to sleep too much. Dr H. Roberts, writing in Every Man in Health, asserts: ―It may safely be stated that, just as the majority eat too much, so the majority sleep too much.‖ One can see the point of this also. It would be a pity to retard our development by holding back those people who are gifted enough to work and play well with less than the average amount of sleep, if indeed it does them no harm. If one of the trends of evolution is that more of the life span is to be spent in gainful waking activity, then surely these people are in the van of this advance.

10.The author seems to indicate that___.

Passage 4

Birds that are literally half asleep—with one brain hemisphere alert and the other sleeping—control which side of the brain remains awake, according to a new study of sleeping ducks.

Earlier studies have documented half brain sleep in a wide range of birds. The brain hemispheres take turns sinking into the sleep stage characterized by slow brain waves. The eye controlled by the sleeping hemisphere keeps shut, while the wakeful hemisphere‘s eye stays open and alert. Birds also can sleep with both hemispheres resting at once.

Decades of studies of bird flocks led researchers to predict extra alertness in the more vulnerable, end of the row sleepers. Sure enough, the end birds tended to watch carefully on the side away from their companions. Ducks in the inner spots showed no preference for gaze direction.

Also, birds dozing at the end of the line resorted to single hemisphere sleep, rather than total relaxation, more often than inner ducks did. Rotating 16 birds through the positions in a four duck row, the researchers found outer birds half asleep during some 32 percent of dozing time versus about 12 percent for birds in internal spots.

―We believe this is the first evidence for an animal behaviorally controlling sleep and wakefulness simultaneously in different regions of the brain,‖ the researchers say.

The results provide the best evidence for a long standing supposition that single hemisphere sleep evolved as creatures scanned for enemies. The preference for opening an eye on the lookout side could be widespread, he predicts. He‘s seen it in a pair of birds dozing side by side in the zoo and in a single pet bird sleeping by a mirror. The mirror side eye closed as if the reflection were a companion and the other eye stayed open.

Useful as half sleeping might be, it‘s only been found in birds and such water mammals as dolphins, whales, and seals. Perhaps keeping one side of the brain awake allows a sleeping animal to surface occasionally to avoid drowning.

Studies of birds may offer unique insights into sleep. Jerome M. Siegel of the UCLA says he wonders if birds‘ half brain sleep ―is just the tip of the iceberg.‖ He speculates that more examples may turn up when we take a closer look at other species.

16. A new study on birds’ sleep has revealed that ________.

A. half brain sleep is found in a wide variety of birds

B. half brain sleep is characterized by slow brain waves

C. birds can control their half brain sleep consciously

D. birds seldom sleep with the whole of their brain at rest

17. According to the passage, birds often half sleep because

________.

A. they have to watch out for possible attacks

B. their brain hemispheres take turns to rest

C. the two halves of their brain are differently structured

D. they have to constantly keep an eye on their companions

18. The example of a bird sleeping in front of a mirror indicates that

________.

A. the phenomenon of birds dozing in pairs is widespread

B. birds prefer to sleep in pairs for the sake of security

C. even an imagined companion gives the bird a sense of security

D. a single pet bird enjoys seeing its own reflection in the mirror

19. While sleeping, some water mammals tend to keep half awake in

order to ____.

A. alert themselves to the approaching enemy

B. emerge from water now and then to breathe

C. be sensitive to the ever changing environment

D. avoid being swept away by rapid currents

20. By “just the tip of the iceberg”, Siegel suggests that ________.

A. half brain sleep has something to do with icy weather

Part I Reading Comprehension(2*25=50points) Directions:There are five passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them, there are four choices marked A,B,C and D.Decide on the best choice. Passage1 Economic inequality is the“defining challenge of our time,”President Barack Obama declared in a speech last month to the Center for American Progress.Inequality is dangerous,he argued, not merely because it doesn’t look good to have a large gap between the rich and the poor, but because inequality itself destroys upward mobility, making it harder for the poor to escape from poverty.“Increased inequality and decreasing mobility pose a fundamental threat to the American Dream,”he said. Obama is only the most prominent public figure to declare inequality. Public Enemy No.1and the greatest threat to reducing poverty in America.A number of prominent economists have also argued that it’s harder for the poor to climb the economic ladder today because the rungs in that ladder have grown farther apart. For all the new attention devoted to the1percent,a new data set from the Equality of Opportunity Project at Harvard and Berkeley suggests that,if we care about upward mobility overall,we’re vastly exaggerating the dangers of the rich-poor gap.Inequality itself is not a particularly strong predictor of economic mobility,as sociologist Scott Winship noted in a recent article based on his analysis of this data.So what factors,at the community level,do predict if poor children will move up the economic ladder as adults? What explains, for instance, why the Salt Lake City metro area is one of the100largest metropolitan areas most likely to lift the fortunes of the poor and the Atlanta metro area is one of the least likely? Harvard economist Raj Chetty has pointed to economic and racial segregation, community density, the size of a community’s middle class, the quality of schools, community religiosity, and family structure, which he calls the“single strongest correlate of upward mobility.”Chetty finds that

Part ⅨWriting (30%) Is It Wise to Seek Cosmetic Surgery? In recent years, turning on the television and browsing through newspapers, we can see numerous cosmic surgery advertisements. With the influence of these advertisements and the change of notion, an increasing number of Chinese people have undergone cosmetic surgery. Many people believe that cosmetic surgery can beautify their appearance and bring lots of benefits. However, in my view, it is unwise to take cosmic surgery due to its great risks, bad psychological effects and heavy economic burden. To begin with, cosmetic surgery means unexpected surgical risks for those aiming to be more artificially beautiful. Even though nowadays the medical technology has improved by leaps and bounds, and doctors often ensure that they will minimize the medical risks during the operation, many cosmetic surgery accidents frequently happen every year. In addition to life risk, cosmetic surgery also involves other surgical risk like bleeding, infection, allergic reactions, coma and so on, which will lead to serious consequences. Another reason why I am against it is that it has bad effect on the customer’s psychological health. It has been observed that many individuals undergoing cosmetic surgery tend to suffer from an obsession or infatuation with their look, which can cause an addition and may impel them to undergo much more cosmic surgery technology, repetitive
