阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项,并在答卷上将该项涂黑。

(A)

I’ve often wondered if I might do more good as a travel agent rather than as a psychologist. It seems that I have been more dramatically affected by certain kinds of travel experiences than I ever have.

My trip to Iceland is a fine example of that. The plan was to spend two days in a remote mountain hut in Iceland. I was working on a photographic book about winter in Iceland and needed to capture images of this amazing region of high mountain peaks, smoky volcanoes, and lakes with floating icebergs.

The moment after we arrived, the weather turned extreme making visibility impossible. It snowed so much and the wind blew so hard that we couldn’t leave the tiny hut. To stay warm, we walked around in circles much of the day inside the tiny hut. We tried to call for help but the radio

did not work. Day after day, we watched our supplies of food and fuel grow dangerously short. We got acute cabin fever (幽居病) and started going for walks and ski expeditions outside. Even when the weather finally broke, nobody came to get us even though it was three days beyond our scheduled pickup. By the time the rescue team came to pull us out, we had all given up hope.

From then on, the world looks different to me, as does my life. It would have taken me years of psychotherapy(心理治疗)to get to the same point.

Almost everyone has a story to tell, and interestingly, most of these experiences were not altogether pleasant at the time. In fact, it appears that the most constructive life-changing journeys were those that involved some sorts of awful and uncomfortable events that forced the person to develop new resources, increase confidence, and solve problems in new ways.

46. The writer went to Iceland to ______.

A. enjoy the natural beautiful floating icebergs

B. take photos about the region for a book

C. collect materials for psychological research

D. challenge the high mountains there

47. During the trip in Iceland, those travelers faced difficulties EXCEPT that ______.

A. they got lost in the mountain

B. they were short of food and fuel

C. they couldn’t see the surroundings clearly

48. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. I do better as a travel agent than as a psychologist.

B. Some travel experiences have more influence on me.

C. Certain kinds of travel experiences.

D. My trip to Iceland.

49. The writer has probably felt__________ since he was saved.

A. hopeless

B. scared

C. safe

D. confident

50. What does the writer want to tell us in the passage?

A. He would like to be a travel agent.

B. He had an awful experience in Iceland.

C. Awful journeys may become life-changing events that encourage people.

D. Different people have different stories which are not pleasant at all.

(B)

Winter Blues

It’s November. The days are getting shorter and the nights longer. And Mary, in London, is eating more, sleeping more, and feeling depressed. In February, things become worse for her, but by April, Mary is back to normal. This pattern repeats itself year after year. Mary is not alone.

There are others who have the same problem all over the world—anywhere, in fact, where winter days are shorter and nights are longer.

Researchers believe that Mary, and millions like her, suffer from a condition they call “Seasonal Affective Disorder”(SAD for short). This condition is a kind of depression that comes with decreases in light exposure. They feel tired, depressed and easily get annoyed or angry. They eat so much that they gain weight. SAD, say the researchers, can influence anyone but most often influences women.

Fortunately, there are treatments for SAD. If the problem is not serious, people may improve just by brightening the rooms in their house and getting exposure to more sunlight. Many people with more serious cases can feel better with a new light treatment. With this treatment, SAD sufferers get between 30 minutes to a few hours a day of extra exposure to a special light(one that is five to twenty times brighter than typical indoor lighting). By increasing their exposure to either natural or manmade light, about 75% of people with SAD get better.

Medical researchers tell people not to self-diagnose. SAD, they say, is a serious condition. A person with SAD follows the same pattern each year. He or she has depressions every winter, and things get back to normal in spring and summer. If you feel sad and easily get annoyed once in a while during the winter, you probably don’t have SAD.

The new light treatment is changing the lives of people like Mary. Mary can now enjoy the seasonal changes, just as most of us do.

51. What does “winter blues” mean?

A.Feeling depressed in winter.

54. The passage is probably from __________.

A. an instruction book

When Britain's great Prime Minister, Sir Winston Churchill, was young, he attended a public school called Harrow. He was not a good student, and as matter of fact, had he not been the son of a famous leader, he probably would have been thrown out of the school for his offences. However, he completed his work at Harrow, went on to the University, and then had a successful career in the British Army, touring both Africa and India. He later was elected prime minister and brought great courage to Britain though his speeches and other work during the dark days of World War II.

Toward the very end of his period as prime minister, he was invited to address the young boys at his old school, Harrow. After being introduced, Sir Winston stood up - all five feet, five inches and 107 kilos of him! He gave this short but moving speech: “Young men, never give up. Never give up! Never give up! Never, never, never, never!”

Personal history, education, situation - none of these can hold back a strong spirit. Think, for

example, of Abraham Lincoln, who was elected president of the United States in 1860. He grew up on a small farm at what was then the edge of the settled part of the United States. He had only one year of regular education. In those early years, his family hardly had a penny and he only read about half a dozen books. In 1832 he lost his job and was defeated when he tried to get elected to the Illinois government. In 1833 he failed in business. In 1834 he was elected to the state government, but in 1835 the woman he loved died. In 1838 he was defeated when he tried to become a leader in the Illinois government, and in 1843 he was defeated when he tried to enter the U.S. Congress. In 1846 he was elected to Congress but in 1848 lost a second election and was forced out. In 1849 he was refused a job with the national government, and in 1854 he was defeated for the U.S. Senate. In 1856 he was defeated in the election for vice president, and in 1858 he was again defeated for the Senate.

Many people consider Lincoln to be the greatest president of all time. Yet it should be remembered how many failures and defeats marked his early life.

Some of the world's greatest men and women have met huge problems and difficulties at some time in their lives, but have gone on to do great deeds.
