If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.

“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.

It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths

skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

New Zealand is an English-speaking country, but the government recognizes another language, too. This is the Maori language. English sailors began to visit New Zealand after 1770. They found the Maoris, a dark-skinned people, living there. They had come from islands in the Pacific Ocean 400 years before the 14th century.

For a long time the British Government was not very interested in these faraway islands. It was made a British colony in 1840. In this year the first British people came to settle in the new country. More and more settlers came from Britain later.

The Maoris were friendly to the first settlers. But soon the new settlers wanted the Maoris’ land. So in 1844 there was a fighting between them. This was the first of several wars between the two peoples. The next fifty years was very bad for the Maoris. Many were killed in the wars. Many more died from new diseases brought by the British. For many years, the British New Zealanders looked down upon the Maoris. Since last century the two peoples have lived in peace. Unlike the other senses, which are only in your head, your sense of touch is all over your body. Throughout your life, you receive an endless flow of information about the world and yourself from your sense of touch. It tells you if something is hot or cold, hard or soft. It sends messages of pain, such as a headache or sore throat, if there is a problem.

There are thousands of tiny sensors (传感器) all over your body. They are all linked together. These sensors are also linked to your spinal cord (脊髓) and your brain to make up your central nervous system. Through this system, the different parts of your body can send messages to your brain. It is then the brain’s job to decide what it is you are actually feeling. All this happens in just a split second.

Not all parts of your body have the same amount of feeling. Areas that have the most nerves, or sensors, have the greatest amount of feeling. For example, the tips of your fingers have more feeling than parts of your arm.

Some sensors get used to the feeling of an object after a period of time. When you first put your shirt on in the morning, you can feel its pressure on your skin. However, some of the sensors stop responding (反应) during the day.

One feeling you cannot get used to is the feeling of pain. Pain is an important message, because it tells your brain that something harmful is happening to you. Your brain reacts by doing something right away to protect you.

One of the largest counties in Texas is named for Captain Erastus “Deaf” Smith, a deaf man. Captain Smith was the leader of General Sam Houston’s scouts during the Texas Revolution, the war in which Texas won its freedom from Mexico. The county is called Deaf Smith county.

A scout in the days of the Texas Revolution was much like what a spy (间谍) is today. Hi, everyone! I will graduate from high school in June. Some of my foreign friends have asked me about the process of entering an American university, so here I will tell you how it works.

After you have been accepted to a university, you need to be able to pay for your study there. To help students pay for their education, the government offers loans which students do not have to repay until after they graduate. Scholarships are also available to students who have excellent grades, are good athletes or have financial needs. Because university tuition is so expensive, many students also work part-time while they are at university.

University courses are quite different from classes at high school. You only attend each class two or three times a week, you have to study a lot more outside of class. Classes are much bigger too and some can have as many as 200 students in them.

There will be many new things to learn, but I think I will enjoy university.

Besides, faced with the rising energy prices, people have turned to the production of biofuels, which has worsened the severe situation.

Then what should we do to deal with the problem? On one hand, we should focus on the environmental protection and improve the ecology.
