A

To err is human. To blame the other guy is even more human.

Common sense is not all that common.

Why tell the truth when you can come up with a good excuse?

These three popular misquotes(戏谑的引语)are meant to be jokes, and yet they tell us a lot about human nature. To err, or to make mistakes, is indeed a part of being human, but it seems that most people don’t want to accept the responsibility for having made a mistake. They naturally look for someone else who could be responsible for the problem. Perhaps it is the natural thing to do. The original quote about human nature went like this:“To err is human, to forgive, divine(神圣的.” This saying mirrors an ideal: people should be forgiving of others’mistakes. Instead, we tend to do the opposite-find someone else to pass the blame on to. However, taking responsibility for something that went wrong is a mark of great maturity.

Common sense is what we call clear thought. Having common sense means having a good general plan that will make things work well, and it also means staying with the plan. Common sense tells you that you take an umbrella out into a rainstorm, but you leave the umbrella home when you hear a weather forecast for sunshine. Common sense does not seem to be common for large organizations, because there are so many things going on that one person cannot be in charge of everything. People say that in a large company,“the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.”

And what is wrong with a society that thinks that making up a good excuse is like creating a work of art? One of common problems with making excuses is that people, especially young people, get the idea that it’s okay not to be totally honest all the time. There is a corollary(直接推论)to that: if a good excuse is“good”even if it isn’t honest, then where is the place of the truth?

1. According to the passage, which of the following seems the most human?______

A. To search for truth.

B. To achieve one’s ideal

C. To make fun of others’ mistakes

D. To criticize others for one’s own error.

2. According to the author, what is a sign of a man’s maturity? ______

A. Doing things his own way.

B. Bearing responsibility for his mistakes.

C. Making as few mistakes as possible.

D. Thinking seriously about his wrongdoings.

3.Which of the following is NOT based on common sense?

A.A man tries to take charge of everything in a large company.

B.A student goes out with an umbrella in stormy weather.

C.A company’s next move follows good plan.

D.A lawyer acts on fine judgments.

4.What is the author’s opinion a bout a good excuse?

B. Inventing a good excuse needs creative ideas.

C. A good excuse is as rewarding as honesty.

D. Bitter truth is better than a good excuse.

5. What would be the best title for this passage?

A Mirror of Human Nature B. To Blame of to Forgive C.A Mark of Maturity D.Truth of Excuse

B

Believe it or not, illusion(错觉) of sight can cut highway crashes.

Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple illusion of sight . Bent patterns, called chevrons (人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.

Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.

C. is planning to repeat Japan's success. Starting next years the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.

Excessive speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related danger are the greatest - curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.

Some studies suggest that straight, level bars painted across roads can originally cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to

seeing the painted bars.

Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a road appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

6. The passage mainly discusses______.

A. a new way of highway speed control

B. a new pattern for painting highways

C. a new approach to training driver

D. a new type of illusion of sight

7. On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that______.

A. they should avoid area of speed-related danger

B. they are driving in the wrong road

C. they should slow down their speed

D. they are approaching the speed limit

8. The advantage of chevrons over straight, level bars is that the former______.

A. can remind drivers to slow driving speed

B. can cut road accidents in half

C. will lead drivers to a narrow load

D.can make drivers continuously focus on driving speed

9. The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to______.

A. try out the Japanese method in certain areas

B. change the road signs across the country

C. replace straight, level bars with chevrons

D. repeat the Japanese road patterns

10. What does the author say about straight, level bars painted across roads?

A. They are falling out of use in the United States.

B. They tend to be ignored by drivers in a short period of time.

C. They are applicable only on broad roads.

D. They cannot be applied successfully to traffic circles.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。(E涂AB, F涂AC, G涂AD)

The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.

But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. 1 1 Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.

For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. 12

If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. 13 If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

14 Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to c orrect everyone else. 15 At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.

It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.

A.It’s natural that there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online.

B.Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.

C.Everyone was new to the network once.

D.The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated.

E.When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.

F.You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages.

G.If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

A Every one of us has been hurt by others – either by their words or actions. In those moments, you may feel so much anger that you want to hurt the other person too. But we all know that revenge(报复) doesn’t get us anywhere. So, in order to live a happy life, the best way to deal with the problem is, perhaps, as the old saying goes, to “forgive and forget”. The wisdom of this saying has even been proven in scientific studies. “It is well established that learning to forgive others can have positive benefits for one’s physical and mental Health,”Saima Noreen, a scientist at the University of St Andrews, Uk, told the Huffington Post. And now, Noreen and her research team may have found one more reason that you should stick to this principle – forgiving somebody who has hurt you makes it easier for you to forget the unhappy memory, according to their new study. In the study, researchers asked volunteers to read descriptions of 40 different situations that contained bad actions such as stealing, lying and cheating.

A While most high school students spend most of their time worrying about who likes who, and different relationships between their classmates, I choose to focus on my school lessons and sports. When I was young, my mother encouraged me to develop and keep friendship with boys in order to build strong relationships. But she told me not to risk a good friendship with a boy with the title of boyfriend. It's indeed a wise choice to stay friends with those of the opposite sex(异性). In my opinion, even though some high school relationship might continue after graduation, the probability of them lasting much longer is so slim (微小的) that there really is not a point to it. Firstly you have to think about such a question----whether it is possible to hurt both of you, or even hurt both of your future husbands or wives. My second point is that you still can date(约会) if you hope marriage could possibly follow. Except this, there really is not any other reason for dating. Some students desire relationships for a chance to be romantic (浪漫的). While these are nice to have, there are many more important things at this point in our lives. The titles of boyfriend and girlfriend put too much stress on a relationship between high school students. Just staying as common friends may be the best choice for us. I strongly advise we should deal with it in a proper way and follow our teachers’ advice if necessary. 21. The author writes this passage probably for_ to read. A. high school students B. school teachers C. parents and teachers D. married couples 22. Between the opposite sexes, the relationship of being good friends might be__ than that of being boy/girl friends. A. weaker B. safer C. slimmer D. stronger 23. How does the writer like the idea of dating among the students? A. Dating is a nice chance for students to be romantic. B. Studying is far more important than dating in school C. In high school dating can surely lead to future marriage D. Dating in high school is sure to hurt your future family 24. The underlined word "it" in the last paragraph might refer to_ . A. the title of boyfriend or girlfriend at school B. advice given by both teachers and parents C. the pressure from school lessons and sports D. the relationship between students of opposite sexes B “Let’s go Dutch, shall we?” Jim said after a dinner to his friends in a restaurant. What does Jim mean? Long ago, there was a kind of dinner called Dutch treat. At a Dutch treat, the invited guests were expected to pay for their own share of the food and drink. Now, Dutch treat means when friends go out to have fun, each person pays his or her own share. There are many other expressions related with “Dutch” in American English. However, most of them were first used in England in the 17th century. At that time, the British and the Dutch were war enemies. So when British people talked about something wrong or bad, they would like to use the word “Dutch”. A common expression heard a few years ago was in Dutch. A friend may tell you, “You are in Dutch. The teacher is angry with you. Be careful!” When a soldier took Dutch leave, he left the army without permission. Dutch courage is the false courage produced by the effects of drinking wine. When someone has just said something you do n’t believe is true, you can say “I am a Dutch-man.” There is one expression that did come from the Dutch. That is to talk like a Dutch uncle. The Dutch were known for the strict and serious way they educated their children. 25. What did people mean by sa ying “Let’s go Dutch”? A. The guests should leave first. B. Each person should pay his or her own bill C. The food should be better next time. D. People should go to another restaurant. 26. According to the passage, the British in the 17th century ______. A. first used the word "Dutch" B. were mistaken for Dutch people C. got along well with the Dutch people D. used the word "Dutch" for something bad
