6:45 am

“Good morning! I’m ready for a new day.” I got up and took a short shower so that I could save water. I also turned the water off while I was brushing my teeth.

7:20 am

I rode my bike to school. It took me about 20 minutes to get to school.

9:00 am

I drank out of my reusable water bottle at morning break. I used to bring bottled water to school, but later I started to bring my reusable bottle. I’ve saved money and also made less trash by using it.

1:00 pm

During lunchtime, I printed my article on both sides of the paper. I also proofread (校对) the article before I printed it so that I wouldn’t have to print it again.

6:00 pm

I went back home, and instead of watching TV and playing video games — things that would use a lot of energy — I did some exercise to keep fit.

7:30 pm

I only turned on one light in my bedroom. I also tried to focus on doing one thing at a time and didn’t have my TV on while doing my homework.

9:15 pm

I picked out some of my old clothes that I would give to the charity shop near my home so that

others could also be environmentally friendly.

Going green really hasn’t been that hard. It actually is a lot of fun thinking of creative ways to help improve the environment!

There are animals that are able to live in extremely cold weather. One of the best known is the polar bear of the North Pole.

Polar bears live both on land and in the sea. They may drift hundreds of miles on huge pieces of floating (漂浮的) ice. Polar bears are excellent swimmers, too. They can cross great distances of open water. While in the sea, they feed mostly on fish and seals.

On land, these huge animals, which are 10 feet long and weigh about 1,000 pounds, can run 25 miles an hour. Surprisingly, polar bears live as plant eaters rather than hunters while on land. Unlike many other kinds of bears, polar bears do not hibernate (冬眠). They are active all year long.

Baby polar bears are born during the winter. They are pink and almost hairless. These helpless babies weigh only two pounds — less than one third the size of most human babies. By the time they are ten weeks old, polar bear babies are about the size of young dogs and have enough white fur to protect themselves in the open air.

The mother gives her babies swimming, hunting and fishing lessons. But by the time autumn comes, the babies are left to live on their own.

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. There was no rain for about a month. Cows stopped giving milk. On this day, I saw a wonder (奇迹).

I was making lunch when I saw my 6-year-old son, Billy, walking very slowly towards the woods. Minutes later he ran towards the house. Soon after that I saw him walking towards the woods again. This went on for an hour. Finally I walked out of the house quietly and followed him.

Billy cupped (窝成杯状) both hands in front of him as he walked, careful not to drop the water he carried. Then I saw an amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them. I saw a tiny baby deer lying on the ground. It was dying of thirst, and it lifted its head to drink the water in my boy’s hands.

When the water was gone, Billy ran back to the house. I followed him to the tap. Billy turned it on and let the water slowly fill up his “cup”. When he stood up and turned, I was there in front of him. His eyes were filled with tears (眼泪). “I’m not wasting water, Mum,” he said. I joined him with a bottle of water from the kitchen.

It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so much more exciting. You need not worry if you lack money. This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me, I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office. I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation. More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting. I was told at the window that there were no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list. As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard our conversation. “Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home?” I said yes. “Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you. You don’t know what a letter like that means to us. We usually get nothing but complaints.”

Whether it's a decision-making session, a basketball game, or a family outing, they can't help grabbing the lead dog position and clinging on to it for dear life. True leaders don't assume that it's their divine(神圣的)right to take charge every time two or more people get together. Quite the opposite. A great leader will assess each situation on its merits, and will only take charge when their position, the situation, and/or the needs of the moment demand it. Many business executives confuse leadership with action.
