Lord of the Flies蝇王英文读后感

Book Review---Lord of the Flies

I read the famous critical novel Lord of the Flies in last winter holiday, and I think it is

a very thought-provoking book. It exposes the natural evil and savage in humanity, also known as the weaknesses of humanity, by telling us a story between a group of boys’ life on a desert island.

In the midst of “World War Three”, a British plane crashed onto a tropical isolated island in a remote region of the Pacific Ocean. The only survivors on the plane were boys below the age of 13. Two boys, the fair-haired Ralph and an overweight boy with spectacles who has asthma and is reluctantly nicknamed “Piggy”, founda conch in the beach. Ralph used the conch as a horn to assemble all the survived boys into one area, and they began a meeting. In the meeting, Ralph was chosen to be the “chief” of all the boys, and the conch became the symbol of hope and democracy. Ralph asserted only two primary goals: To have fun and to maintain a smoke signal so that passing-by ships will be aware of their existence on the island. One boy, Jack Merridew, was the leader of a boy choir. He didn’t like Ralph and disobeyed Ralph’s rules many times. He not only stopped the smoke going, but also organize a “hunting party” mainly for his savagery. Piggy, on the other hand, unfortunately becomes an unwilling source of laugh for the other children. But good times didn’t last long: Ralph and Jack began to quarrel, the boys were jittery like a grounded monster. Jack put colors on his face---just like wearing a mask. He hid himself and the other boys in the “hunting party”, and their beasts in the heart began to break out. Jack wanted to have powers, he wanted to be the “chief”, and there came the Civil War. The children are in a tit for tat situation: Ralph and Piggy on one side with Jack and the other boys on the opposite side. While they were fighting their ever-lasting battle, one boy named Simon left the group and discovered the villain of all this: The born darkness inside humanity. When we are far from the civilization society, having no proper rules or orders, and lacking for shelter, food, and other important things, the beast inside us will be released. But sarcastically, Piggy and Simon both lost their life in the civil war, the conch was smashed to fragments, and Ralph was being miserable: The other boys that were led by Jack were hunting him down. The brutal hunting didn’t end until a passing-by ship saw their smoke. All of the boys sobbed hard when they saw the captain because they finally realized what they have done after seeing hope. The author, William Golding, thought that a person is born evil in the novel. Lord of the Flies’ plots are very reality, everyone is like a moon and has a dark side which he or she never shows to anybody. In the society, we have moral restraint and laws, so we always keep a good polity.

Meet the hunting party’s orgiastic song:

“Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!”

When you read the book, you will find out the nature of human is really complex, and civilization education is weak if it fights against human darkness.
