If you judge by the number of people who go to see the games and by the number of those who actually play it, basketball is probably the most popular sport in the United States today. In the United state，30 percent of the grown-up population has a “weight problem”. To many people，the cause is clear: we eat too much．But scientific experiments do little to support this idea. Going back to the America of 1910，we find that people were thinner than today，yet they ate more food. In sport the sexes are separate（分开的，有区别的）. Women and men do not run or swim in the same races（跑道）. Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women are called “the weaker sex”, or, if men want to please them, “the fair sex”. But boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68. Are women’s bodies really weaker?

Some of the fastest women swimmers（游泳运动员）today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 metres in 4 minutes 21.2 seconds when she was only 16.
