As a newspaper reporter, Inez’ s father traveled around the world. He wrote stories about the interesting people he met. On her fifteenth birthday, Inez could hardly believe it when her father announced that she was old enough to go with him on one of his trips ! He said his next story would be about salt mining in Europe. Inez had never thought much about salt, she didn' t know what to expect, but she knew she would love being with her father.

Months later, when Inez and her father arrived at the salt mine ,they found themselves walking into the middle of a busy workday. Mrs. Walker, the owner, said she would not be available to talk until the workday was over. She suggested that Inez and her father should help out so Inez ’ s father would have first-hand experience for his story. Before Inez realized what was happening, she was in the factory. This was not what she had imagined her trip would be like.

People rushed past her carrying hammers, nails, and wood to make boxes for the salt. Everyone seemed to be in such a hurry. As another newly constructed box was pushed at her, Inez spread a label with glue and stuck it on the side of the box. When she had agreed to go with her father on his newspaper assignment, she had pictured an adventure, not hard labor.

Inez looked at the salt covering her father' s once-blue pants and sighed. She could taste the salt in her mouth and smell it in the air. Inez had been using salt all her life, but she had never imagined that it existed in such quantities or that it was so hard to package.

Inez' s father rubbed his hands together and grinned at her. ‘‘I know this probably isn’t what you had in mind,”he said, “but sometimes the best days are the ones that don' t go as planned.,,

Best? she wondered. She had learned two lessons today. One was to value every grain

of salt to fall from a shaker. The other was to hear the details before agreeing to go on a job with her father!

56. Why does Inez's father travel around the world?

A. He relaxes after he finishes writing.

B. He enjoys moving around from place to place.

C. He likes to take his family on adventure trips.

D. He needs to collect information for stories.

57. What job does Inez help to do in the salt mine?

A. To attach labels to the box.

B. To interview the workers.

C. To carry salt packages. I). To package the salt.

58. How does Inez feel while working at the salt mine?

A. Happy.

B. Inspired.

C. Disappointed.

D. Annoyed.

59. Why does the author most likely write this story?

A. To discuss what it is like when a child travels with a parent.

B. To describe how places around the world are different.

C. To explain which tools are used when packaging salt.

D. To show that sometimes events turn out differently than expected.

Dear Mr. Whitman,

I am writing to thank you for allowing Maria and me to use your office as a workspace as well as to praise your wonderful organizational skills. Maria and I, as you know, have been in your office many times in the past few clays writing letters to raise money for our community service trip to Pucallpa, Peru , where we will work with poor children. Not only did you allow us to use your office space, but also you helped us greatly by providing us with a list of possible contributors. Without your assistance, I don’ t think we would have been able to raise enough money for such a trip.

We recognize that accepting our request for office space required flexibility on your part, but because of your excellent organizational skills and assistance we were

able to accomplish our objectives without disrupting your daily routine. Every time we needed office supplies, such as pens, highlighters, envelopes, or paper, we were able to find them with ease. Your donations of the materials and postage needed to send over one hundred letters are most appreciated. We could not have done this without you.

You have helped us greatly this past week. Your generosity will not only provide us with the opportunity to make this trip possible, hut will also be a great benefit both to the children in Pucallpa and us. Again, we thank you for your help.

Sincerely,

Amy Fynmore

Hawaii is an important trading center and about six million tourists visit there every year. With all that traffic in and out, exotic species(外来物种)have plenty of opportunities to reach the islands. People tend to pay attention to the shoes they and others wear.” Medical Daily notes that the number of detailed personality traits (特质) detected in the study include a person's general age, income, political tendency, and other personality traits, including someone's emotional stability. Lead researcher Omri Gillath said the judgments were based on the style, cost, color and condition of someone's shoes. In the study, 63 students from the University of Kansas looked at pictures showing 208 different pairs of shoes worn by the study's participants. Participants in the study were photographed in their most commonly worn shoes, and then filled out a personality questionnaire. So, what do your shoes say about your personality? Some of the results were expected: people with higher incomes most commonly wore expensive shoes, and flashier footwear was typically worn by outgoing people. However, some of the more specific results are interesting. For example, “practical and functional” shoes were generally worn by more

A When the sand began kicking up and hitting our faces, I started to worry that maybe we had made a mistake. That afternoon, my dad had stood on the deck (露台) of our home and laughed as our neighbors packed up their cars and headed inland. They left to spend the night in motels or at friends’ homes that were out of range of approaching summer storm. Challenging the weather that threatened to damping our spirits, we lit a fire on the beach. Dad told jokes and we had a good time. When it was 6:30 p.m., all laughter disappeared. Our eyes were drawn to the sky. A tornado (龙卷风) was headed straight for us! In a flash, we were all on our feet. The wind started screaming and now we were running to the cottage. My mom stopped next to the front door. “Where can we go?” She shouted at my dad. Most cottages on this part of Lake Michigan had been built without basements. Ours was no exception. The huge windows and the cot tage itself wouldn’t offer safety from high wind. “Follow me!” my dad yelled. We crawled (爬) beneath the deck, pressing ourselves against the foundation of the cottage. A Micro-Enterprise Credit for Street Youth Introduction Although small-scale business training and credit programs have become more common throughout the world, relatively little attention has been paid to the need to direct such opportunities to youth living on the street or in difficult circumstances. Over the past years, Street Kids International (S.K.I.) has been working with partner organizations in Africa, Latin Africa and India to support the economic lives of street children. The purpose of this paper is to share some of the lessons S.K.I. and our partner organizations have learned. Background Typically, children end up on the streets not due to a single cause, but a combination of factors: the lack of adequately funded schools, the demand for income at home and so on. The street may be attractive to children as a place to find adventurous play and money. However, it is also a place where some children are exposed, with little or no protection, to exploitative employment, and urban crime. Street Business Partnerships S.K.I. has worked with partner organizations in Latin America, Africa and India to develop innovative opportunities for street children to earn income. ● The S.K.I Bicycle Courier Service first started in the Sudan. Participants in this enterprise were supplied with bicycles, which they used to deliver parcels and messages, but they were required to pay for it gradually from their wages. ● The Youth Skills Enterprise Initiative in Zambia is a joint program with the Red Cross Society. Street Youths are supported to start their own small business through business training, life skills training and access to credit. Lessons Learned The following lessons have emerged from the programs that S.K.I. and partner organizations have created.

2021高考英语七选五+完形填空+语法填空每日一练47

2021高考英语七选五+完形填空+语法填空每日一练46 一、七选五 Even if you don’t know the more complex aspects of index funds, everyone generally knows what it means to be good with money. Spend less than your earn, save for the future, stay out of debt. 36 In fact, when we are talking about money management, we are actually talking about our psychological relationship with money. Fundamentally, our financial problems come from unmet needs. In the case of compulsive overspending, the problem is almost never that a person lacks self-control. 37 If you overspend on clothing, you don’t actually believe you need 1,000 items in your closet. More likely, you are uncomfortable with your body or status. Clothing helped you feel good about yourself in the past. 38 If overspending on restaurants, you are not so lazy that you can’t be bothered to cook a single meal. Rather, you are exhausted from doing things you don’t want to do. You need to give yourself energy in the form of a food high, one that will temporarily mask your unhappiness. The path to true financial health is not to reduce your life to a tight budget, 39 Instead of letting yourself be controlled by uncomfortable impulses, financial health is all about creating a budget that allows you to do what you truly desire in life. If your problem is low self-worth, invest strategically in things that will make you feel worthy. Maybe it’s a few amazing pieces of clothing that are tailored well and last long. Maybe it’s a few sessions of therapy. If your problem is burnout, invest in rest and relaxation. 40 When something shifts within you, something shifts around you. Not the other way around. A.Now, you think you are always one dress away from feeling at peace in your own skin. B.Consider reducing your working hours, or setting aside money for a personal trip. C.However, it’s easier to say than to do. D.but to turn to financial consultants for advice on how to manage your bank account. E.Rather, he usually has an unmet basic need which he is addressing through overspending. F.Money principles are simple; it’s human psychology that’s complex. G.but to take an honest look at your needs and meet them with long-term solutions.
