The Man of Many Secrets — Harry Houdini — was one of the greatest American entertainers in the theater this century. He was a man famous for his escapes — from prison cells, from wooden boxes floating in rivers, from locked tanks full of water. He appeared in theaters all over Europe and America. Crowds came to see the great Houdini and his ―magic‖ tricks.

Of course, his secret was not magic or supernatural powers. It was simply strength. He had the ability to move his toes as well as he moved his fingers. He could move his body into almost any position he wanted.

Houdini started working in the entertainment world when he was 17, in 1891. He and his brother Theo performed card tricks in club in New York. They called themselves the Houdini Brothers. When Harry married in 1894, he and his wife Bess worked together as magician and

assistant. But for a long time they were not very successful. Then Harry performed his first prison escape, in Chicago in 1898. Harry persuaded a detective to let him try to escape from the prison, and he invited the local newspapermen to watch.

It was the publicity that came from this that started Harry Houdini’s success. Harr y had fingers trained to escape from handcuffs and toes trained to escape ankle chins. But his biggest secret was how he unlocked the prison doors. Every time he went into the prison cell, Bess gave him a kiss for good luck — and a small skeleton key, which is a key that fits many locks, pass quickly from her mouth to his.

Harry used these prison escapes to build his fame. He arranged to escape from the local prison of every town he visited. In the afternoon, the people of the town would read about it in their local newspapers, and in the evening every seat in the local theater would be full. What was the result? World-wide fame and a name remembered today.

23. From the passage we can infer that Houdini became famous _______.

A. in 1894

B. before he married

C. at the age of 17

D. when he was about 24

24. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A. A Skeleton Key

B. A Man of Many Secrets

C. World-wide Fame

D. Great Escape

The time of year a baby is born can shape what profession they will embark on in later life, a new study has suggested. Being born in a certain month appears to indicate the possibility of what job a person will end up with, the study by the Office for National Statistics found.

Researchers have uncovered that the month in which babies are born could also affect everything from intelligence to length of life. A child born in December is more likely to become a dentist while someone whose birthday falls in January will tend to a debt collector, they found.

A February birth appears to increase the chances of being an artist while March babies appear to go on to become pilots. Meanwhile, April and May are said to have a fairly even spread of professions, births in the summer months mean a much lower chance of becoming a high-earning football player, doctor or dentist. The study was gained by researchers who analyzed the birth months of people in 19 separate occupations using information from the last census (人口普查), the Daily Mail reported. Although these trends may be difficult to explain, relations between birth months and specific health problems have a scientific basis.

Spring babies are at greater risk of illnesses including schizophrenia, Alzheimer’s dise ase, asthma and autism. They may also be less clever than classmates born in other parts of the year.

25. What does the underlined phrase ―embark on‖ refer to?

A. land on

26. According to the researchers, a child born in March is likely to become_______.

D. the choice of profession for April and May is very narrow

28. What can be included from the passage?

A. There exist connections between birth date and occupations

C. People born in Autumn would be more successful than those born in Spring

D. The time of year one is born decides which specific health problems one has

It is part book, part film, part game—and a world away from the best-selling books in any season. But Julian McCrea, developer of the immersive(拟真的) iPad thriller The Craftsman, is convinced his mashup (混搭) of literary gothic and cinematic chiller(恐怖电影或书籍) is the future of fiction.

The app turns the reader into the main character in a tale that draws on influences such as Edgar Allen Poe and Alfred Hitchcock. In future works, McCrea hopes to use the iPad’s built-in camera to read your facial expressions, letting him increase the tension accordingly as the story develops.

With sales of paper books declining, McCrea believes the app represents a new kind of digital storytelling that could open up an Alice in Wonderland rabbit hole of possibilities.

―No two people will get the same experience,‖ says McCrea, who gave up his previous job three years ago to start Portal Entertainment.

The project has echoes of the ―choose your own adventure‖ paperbacks of the 1980s and 90s, which allowed pre-teen readers to plot their own way through treasure islands and spooky forests. But the creators of the new app wanted to take the idea further.

―You,‖ as a fully paid-up character in the drama, can sign online petitions (请愿书) on factious (虚构的)websites and receive mysterious message on your mobile phone from other characters, while the events you attend in the story pop up in your real-life calendar, as the app’s creators attempt to ―bleed‖ the story into your everyday life.

With the story unfolding in short episodes over five days McCrea hopes to capture an audience of thirtysomething dads used to whipping out their phone to play Angry Birds when they have a spare five minutes. But also in his sights is the £87 million British market for thrillers and crime novels.

Authors embrace the new form of digital storytelling as a chance to engage in the innovations of the publishing industry. Mike Jones, the novelist who led the writers’ team for The Craftsman, says the appeal of th e app project was the chance to bring some of the ―age-old traditions of storytelling –genre, character and catharsis(情感的抒发)‖—into new media. ―There has never been a better time to be a storyteller.‖

29. The Craftsman is ____________.

A. an immersive iPad thriller

B. an app that can read our facial expressions

C. the sample of the future books

D. a combination of literary work and fiction

30. How can the app users engage in the thriller The Craftsman?

A. They can be turned into the main character in the tale while reading.

B. They can experience in the real life the events that happened in the tale.

C. They can contribute their ideas to the writers on how the tale continues.

D. They can decide the ending of the tale.

31. What kind of readers does the app intend to target?

A. Young dads in their thirties.

B. Thriller and crime novel lovers.

C. Both A and B.

D. Neither A nor B.

32. What is the attitude of authors towards the new way of storytelling?

A. Opposed.

B. Neutral.

C. Skeptical.

D. Supportive.

We eat what our friends eat, according to a new study presented at the Agricultural and Applied Economic Association’s 2013 annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (U of I) and Oklahoma State University, provided fresh confirmation of how much our environment influences our eating habits. The scientific team analyzed the lunch receipts from a restaurant in Stillwater, Oklahoma that agreed to use three menus designed by the researchers for three months in 2010. One group of diners — the control group —used the restaurant’s original menus with item and price listings. The second group received menus with calorie counts and the third group used menus that had both calorie counts and a traffic light symbol designed to indicate calorie ranges. A green traffic light meant a food option was 400 calories or less, a yellow light indicated 401 calories to 800 calories and a red light was placed next to choices with more than 800 calories.

By analyzing diners’ receipts, the researchers found interesting patterns in what patrons(老主顾)ordered. They also interviewed servers and found that people who were part of larger parties and received menus with traffic lights typically ordered healthier options, which the researchers say suggests the influence of peer pressure.

The researchers then created a model to assess how customers felt about their choices. Based on the popularity of menu items, the researchers determined the probability that individuals were satisfied with their choice. Interestingly, this gauge(测量标准)of satisfaction was influenced by expected factors such as price and calories, but also by fellow diners’ menu choices as well. They found that even if a customer initially felt less satisfied about their choice of say, a salad, they felt better about it if their friends ordered an item within the same menu category.

―The big takeaway from this research is that people were happier if they were making similar choices to those sitting around them,‖ study author Brenna Ellison, an economist at the U of I, said in a statement. ―If my peers are ordering higher-calorie items or spending more money, then I am also happier, or at least less unhappy, if I order higher-calorie foods and spend more money.‖ So if you’re hoping to eat better, try dining with friends who do too.

33. The scientific team came to their conclusion by ________.

A. analyzing receipts from diners using specially designed menus.

B. studying information from the receipts

C. comparing calorie counts and ranges that appear in different menus

D. analyzing the connectio n between diner’s choices and calorie counts

34. According to the research findings, those who ordered healthier options tended to ______.

A. ask the servers for recommendations and notice the calorie counts

B. eat with friends and be concerned about calorie ranges of the food

C. be more affected by their friends’ preference of the choice of food

D. have a much unhealthier eating habit when they ate alone

35. The word ―takeaway‖ is closest in meaning to ________.

A. conclusion

B. success

C. illustration

D. judgment

From good reading we can derive pleasure, companionship, experience, and instruction. A good book may absorb our attention so completely that for the time being we forget our surroundings and even our identity. 36 It increases our contentment when we are cheerful, and lessens our troubles when we are sad. Whatever may be our main purpose in reading, our contact with good books should never fail to give us enjoyment and satisfaction.

37 Whether the characters portrayed(描绘)are taken from real life or are purely imaginary, they may become our companions and friends. In the pages of books we can walk with the wise and the good of all lands and all times. The people we meet in books may delight us either because they resemble human friends whom we hold or because they present unfamiliar types whom we are glad to welcome as new acquaintances. 38 However, the friends we make in books need never weary us with their company. 39 When human friends desert us, good books are always ready to give us friendship, sympathy, and encouragement. One of the most valuable gifts presented by books is experience. Few of us can travel far from home or have a wide range of experiences, but all of us can lead varied lives through the pages of books. Whether we wish to escape from the seemingly dull realities of everyday life or whether we long to visit some far-off place, a book will help us when nothing else can. To travel by book we need no bank account to pay our way; no airship or ocean liner or stream-lined train to transport us; no passport to enter the land of our heart's desire.

40 The beauties of nature, the enjoyment of music, the treasures of art, the triumphs of architecture, the marvels of engineering, are all open to the wonder and enjoyment of those who read.

A. With a good book in our hands we need never be lonely.

B. The possibilities of our literary experiences are almost unlimited.

C. Our literary experiences can be limited.

D. By turning the page we can dismiss them without any fear of hurting their feelings.

E. Our human friends sometimes may bore us.

F. A good book in hand will ease our loneliness more or less.

G. Reading good books is one of the greatest pleasures in life.

Dear editor,

I’m writing to talk about the problem of education for rural children.

Now in the rural areas, there are many children out of school. I think one of the reasons is that their families are too poor to afford their schooling. As a result, they have to stay at home to earn money to support their families. Another reason is that many parents think it’s useless for the g irls to study and they would not like them to go to school. The third reason is that some children are not interested in their lessons, and would not like to go to school.

In my opinion, all children including girls should have the chance to receive an education. People should pay more attention to the education of children because they will play a very important part in the future of our country.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

A summary of the teaching work of senior three English teache rs 汇报人:JinTai College
