I was being interviewed by a senior manager for a major insurance(保险业)company. I told him honestly why I wanted the job——I needed to keep my family in Boston. My wife recently died of a heart attack. A job in Boston would help me reduce some of the extreme trauma (精神创伤)and pain of the loss for my 16-year-old daughter. It was important for me to keep her in her high school. I could still hardly talk about the loss of my wife.

Bruce, the interviewer, was politely empathetic, but he didn't probe any further. He admitted my loss and with great respect, moved on to another subject. After the next round of the interview,Bruce took me to lunch with another person. Then he asked me to take a walk with him. He told me that he,too, had lost his wife. And,like me,he had also been married 20 years and had three children.

In his sharing,I realized that he had experienced the same pain as I had ——a pain that was almost impossible to explain to someone who had not lost a beloved one. He offered his business card and home phone number and suggested that,if I need help of just want someone to talk to,I should feel free to give him a call.

Whether I got the job or not,he wanted me to know that he was there if I ever needed help. When he had no idea if we would ever see each other again,he helped our family deal with one of the greatest losses. He turned the normally cold business interview into a caring support for another person in need.

A. Bruce and the writer saw each other often.

五.任务型阅读(10分)

Reading is a very good habit. But do you know how to pick a book you will really like? Here are some tips.

Start with your interests

Reading on your own isn't like reading for school. You can pick something that's all about your interests, whether it's computers or fashion design.

What's your "type"?

Do you prefer fiction (虚构的)or non-fiction (or both)?

Fiction books like novels can transport you to another world or help you imagine something beyond(超出) your own experience.

Non-fiction books give you the who, what, when, and why of something. They tell stories using facts---but that doesn't mean they're boring. Many of them read like novels from start to finish.

Find a family favorite

What was your mother's favorite book when she was your age or your dad's? Find out and do some reading--- then you can share your thoughts about the book with them.

Join the club

Get your friend together and share your favorite authors and story types. Most sites also have book-club sections. Join a group with your friends and people you trust.

Ask a exper t

Your local library can help you get a lot of great book ideas. Talk to the librarian about your interests---rock stars, sports teams, historical events, whatever you're into--and writers you like, and the librarian can suggest to you books that you will love.

Finally, you'll probably enjoy what you're reading a lot more if you find a quiet place and make time for the book. You'll see that time does fly when you're reading something you love.

51.Is reading on our own the same as reading for school?

________________________________________________________

52.Which type of books helps us imagine something beyond our experience, fiction

books or non-fiction books?

________________________________________________________

53.How do non-fiction books tell stories?

________________________________________________________

54. Why should we know about our parents' favorite books when they were at our age?

_________________________________________________________

55.Who can give us suggestions in a local library?

Happy Memories of My First Year in Junior High School

How time flies! So far I've been studying in our school for nearly three years. It's a long time. But I can't forget my happy memories of the first year in our school.

As soon as I entered my school, I was attracted by the beautiful school yard. The classrooms were big, bright and clean. The playground was covered with green grass. On my way to my classroom, I met a girl, Amy. We were surprised to find that we were in the same class. Amy became my first friend in my school. I couldn't forget my math teacher who helped me a lot with my math studies. At first, I really had a difficult time learning this subject, which made me frustrated. I even lost confidence. However, it was my math teacher,Mr. Lin who showed his great patience to cheer me up. Besides it, he explained the hard math problems to me after class everyday until I really understood them. Little by little, I improved. What a kind teacher! I will remember him forever!

I love my school, my teachers and my classmates.
