I am writing this letter in my room. I can see the Seine (塞纳河) from my window. It’s just below my window and it is beautiful.

I am staying at a student hotel some miles from the center of Paris. I have got a big room and I use it as a bedroom, a study and a sitting room! There is a kitchen

in the hotel, but I don’t often cook there. I usually have my meals at the university. The food there is good and cheap.

The university is only two stops away from here. It takes ten minutes to get there on foot. Most of the other students ride bicycles, but I haven’t got one.

William Shakespeare was a writer of plays and poems. Some of his most famous plays are Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth. He wrote thirty-seven plays in all. They are still popular today.

He was born in 1564 in England. At school he liked watching plays. He decided to be an actor when he finished school at the age of fourteen. In 1582, he married a farmer’s daughter. She was eight years older than he was. Their first child was a dau ghter. Later they had twins. In 1585, Shakespeare left his hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon. His wife and children stayed behind. No one knows why he left or what he did between 1585 and 1592.

At twenty-eight he moved to London and joined a theatre company which opened the Globe Theatre in 1590. He became an actor and he also wrote plays. He often acted in his own plays. He earned a little money from his writing. But he made a lot of money from acting. With the money he bought a large house in his hometown.

At the age of forty-eight, Shakespeare retired and went back to live in Stratford-upon-Avon. He died at the age of fifty-two. He left his money to his family. He left his genius (精神)to the world. You still see his plays in English and in many other languages. He is one of the most famous writers in the world.

Imagine the situation. You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. You passed the last house two hours ago. Then you car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device(装置) which uses satellites(卫星) to find the user’s position(位置). It can find your position within 20 meters. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.

GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic(电子的) maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.

There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver(接收器). You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting the Earth. The receiver contacts(联络) at least four of the satellites and calculates(计算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.

Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate(精确). There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.
