Passage Three

Questions Il to 15 are based on the following passage.

There are two factors which determine an individual's intelligence. The first is the sort of

brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low level of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual-the sort of environment in which he is brought up. If an individual is (不利的) environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.

The importance of environment in determining an individual's intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins, Peter and Mark. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate Peter was raised by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with fewer educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually.

This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark's I. Q was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and forty points higher than his identical brother Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.

11. The main idea of this passage is that ▲ .

A. human brains differ completely

B. the brain a person is born with determines his intelligence

C. environment is crucial in determining a person's intelligence

D. persons having identical brains will have roughly the same Intelligence

12. According to the passage, the average I. Q. is ▲ .

A. 85

B. 100

C. 110

D. 125

13. The case history of the twins appears to support the conclusion that ▲ .

A. individuals with identical brains are seldom tested

B. an individual's intelligence is determined only by his environment

C. lack of educational opportunities blocks the growth of intelligence

D. changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain

14. This passage suggests that an individual's I. Q. is ▲ .

A. can be predicted at birth

B. stays the same throughout his life

D. is determined by his childhood

C. can be increased by education

15. The best title of this passage is ▲ .

A. Measuring Your Intelligence C. The Case of Peter and Mark

B. Intelligence and Environment

D. How the Bram Influences intelligence

Passage Four

Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage.

Three American psychologists did a research study several years ago on what Americans

value most. In the study, eighteen values were asked to put in the order of importance. The result is as follows:

1. family security 3. freedom

2. a world at peace 4. self-respect

5. happiness

6. wisdom

7. a sense of accomplishment 9. true friendship

11. inner harmony

13. national security

15. a world of beauty

17. an exciting life 8. a comfortable life

10. Salvation (拯救) in the religious sense 12. Equality

14. mature love

16. pleasure

18. social recognition

Are you surprised that Americans place their values in this way? Did you think they would put their values in a different order? I would have thought love and friendship might have come higher on this list. As you can see, several of these values are closely related to each other and are dependent upon each other. In other words, we cannot have 1-family security without 2 a world at peace, and 3 national security.

The results of the study showed that people who placed equality high up on their list of

values were those who had positive attitudes towards persons of other races and who supported civil rights activity, especially the work of Martin Luther King Jr.

Another Interesting finding in this study was that eleven-year-old children ranked a world of beauty 7th in Importance, but fifteen-year old children ranked a world of beauty 14th and adults ranked it 17th. Well, what does it mean? Probably it means that as people grow older and take on more responsibilities in their work and with their own families, that appreciating beauty move-back into the background of their lives. What a pity! Children have more time to enjoy equity and Nature.

Philosophers, psychologists and religious people have always been very much conceded

with values. After all, values represent what we each hold most dear to ourselves and to our society.

Societies establish their own forms of government based on the collective values of the people, or at least they try to do so.

D. The American Social Custom

江苏专转本英语真题及答案

江苏省2012 年普通高校专转本统一英 语考试 第一卷(共100 分) Part I Reading Comprehension(共20 题,每题 2 分,共40 分) Passage One Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. American researchers have developed a technique that may become an important tool in fighting AIDS. The technique stops the AIDS virus from attacking its target-cells in the body's defense system. When AIDS virus enters the blood, it searches for blood cells called T4 lymphocytes (淋巴细胞). The virus connects to the outside of T4 lymphocytes, then forces its way inside. There it directs the cells' genetic (基因的)material to produce copies of the AIDS virus. This is how AIDS spreads.Researchers think they may be able to stop AIDS from spreading by preventing virus from connecting to T4 cells. When AIDS virus finds a T4 cell, it actually connects to a part of the cell called CD4 protein.Researchers want to fool the virus by putting copies or clones of the CD4 protein into the blood. This way the AIDS virus will connect to the cloned protein instead of the real ones. Scientists use the genetic engineering methods to make the clones. Normally a CD4 protein remains on the T4 cell at all times. The AIDS virus must go to it.In a new technique, however, the cloned CD4 protein is not connected to a cell. It floats freely, so many more can be put into the blood to keep the AIDS virus away from real CD4 proteins on T4 cells. One report says the AIDS virus connects to the cloned proteins j ust as effectively as to real protein. That report was based on tests with blood cells grown in labs. The technique is just now beginning t o be tested in animals. If successful, it may be tested in humans within a year. 1. The new technique can ________. A. cure AIDS B. kill the AIDS virus C. prevent the AIDS virus from spreading D. produce new medicines for AIDS 2. When the AIDS virus enters the blood, it is reproduced by ________. A. the inside of the virus itself B. any blood cells in the body C. the CD4 protein D. the genetic material of T4 cells 3 The AIDS virus connects to cloned proteins instead of to the real ones because ________. A. the cloned proteins stay on the T4 cells B. the cloned proteins can float freely in the blood C. it connects to cloned proteins more effectively than to the real ones D. the cloned proteins are made by genetic engineering methods 4. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. The new technique has been tested in labs. B. The new technique is being tested in animals. C. The new technique may be tested in humans. D. The new technique is now under clinical test. 5 Which of the following could be the best title of this passage? A. AIDS---a Fatal Disease. B. A New Technique in fighting AIDS. C. Actually, in some big cities, fresh water cannot meet the daily needs. ?Therefore, to find new ways to save water is an urgent task. First, we should pass strict laws to control any waste of water. Second, scientists must work even harder to purify sea water and polluted water, and try to find substitutes to reduce the use of fresh water. 范文三: 1.大学生了解社会的必要性。 2. 了解社会的途径(大众媒介、社会服务等) 3. 我打算怎么做。

Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the answer sheet. Passage One Questions 1~5 are besed on the following passage. Young Koreans are beginning to do it alone when it comes to finding a partner, though matchmaking is still the most common way for boys to meet girls. Professional matchmakers can make thousands of American dollars by introducing suitable marriage partners to each other, but partners also play a role in the process during which young Koreans meet. In Confucius Korea, where marriage is regarded as more of a business contract than a sacred thing, the scene of the first meeting is repeated hundreds of times a day in coffee shops in the main hotels around Seoul. The business of continuing the family lineage (血统)and keeping the blooding pure is often too important to be left to romance and chance encounters. Often, the girl will work out a system of secret signals with her mother, from which her parents can tell if she is interested. For example, if the girl orders a coffee it might mean that she wants her parents to leave her alone with the boy, while a milk shows that she wants them to stay. Sometimes the matchmaking is not always so formal, with the introduction being made by friends. But whether through friends or families, there is hardly a Korean man in the country who has not gone through this process --- sometimes six or seven times. 1. The word “matchmaking” in the passage means ____. A. a very formal ritual(仪式)attended by boys and girls B. introducing boys and girls to know each other for the purpose of marriage C. producing matches to make a fire or light a cigarette D. arranging games between men and women 2. Koreans like drinking coffee in coffee shops very much B. men and women want to meet as many times as possible C. they are busy with communicating with different people D. marriage is seen as a business contract instead of something sacred

What do we mean by “culture?” Lately social scientists have begun to ask if culture is found just in humans, or if some animals have a culture too. (81) When we speak of culture, we mean a way of life a group of people have in common. Culture includes the beliefs and attitudes we learn. It is the patterns of behavior that help people to live together. It is also the patterns of behavior that make one group of people different from another group. Our culture lets us make up for having lost out strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses. Instead we use tools, cooperate with one another, and communicate with language. But these aspects of human behavior, or “culture,”can also be found in the lives of certain animals. Animals can make tools, for example. We used to think that the ability to use tools was the dividing line between human beings and other animals. Lately, however, we have found that this is not the case. Chimpanzees(非洲小猩猩) can not only use tools but actually make tools themselves. Animals can also share knowledge with each other and use their own language to communicate. So, it may be important for us to know that the line dividing us from animals is not as clear as we used to think. 1. Choose the statement that best expresses the main idea____. A. Chimpanzee can learn to use sign language to make sentences. B. Other animals can invent tools. C. Knowledge and communication are no longer signs of only human behavior. D. The line dividing human culture from animal culture is not as clear as we might think. 2. “Culture” refers to ____. A. book language of behavior we learn B. the patterns of behavior we learn C. traditional ideas D. people’s good habits 3. A chimpanzee’s use of tools means ____. A. animals are the same as human beings B. animals can be as clever as human beings C. the dividing line between culture and animal culture no longer exists D. animals may have a culture like our own 4. Which of the following statement is TRUE? A. The ability to use language separates human beings. B. We can be certain that animals have a culture too. C. Social scientists doubt if animals have a culture too. D. Some traditional ideas about the difference between human beings and animals may be wrong. 5.The first sentence of the second paragraph “Our culture lets us make up for having lost our strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses” means ____. A. as a result of our culture, we have lost our strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses B. our culture has enabled us even better though we have lost our strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses C. our culture has brought back to us strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses that we have lost D. our culture asks that we lose our strength, claws, long teeth, and other defenses which animals still have
