Age of Selfie (自拍照) Artists

When you’re out with a friend and take a photo of yourselves, do you know that you are also creating a selfie, a work of art? Or that you are competing with Vincent van Gogh himself? Probably not.. Your idea might be to show off your selfie on WeChat or QQ, but you probably don’t think of the internet as a gallery or of yourself as an artist.

But the chief executive of London’ Saatchi Gallery, Nigel Hurst, thinks that the casual pictures we take of ourselves have something in common with self-portraits(自画像) by the great masters. In support of the idea, the Saatchi Gallery has a new exhibition called From Selfie to Self-Expression.

It features well-known self-portraits from artists including Dutch painter Van Gogh and Rembrandt. It also has selfies on show that have “quickly become icons(偶像) of the digital age”. These include one taken by Kim Kardashian and another of former US President Barack Obama with former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, according to the BBC. The gallery is even encouraging visitors to add their own selfies to the show.

Hurst is perhaps not being 100 percent serious. He isn’t saying that a photo you take of yourself in your favorite restaurant can be compared with a self-image painted by Van Gogh. But he does make a serious point. Once upon a lime, it was only artists who could make images of themselves. Today, however, we all have that ability through our smartphones.

The popularity of the selfie rocketed after smartphones started to become widely used. And Hurst described the smartphone selfie as an example of “a shift in society using technology as a means of self-expression”. He told The Guardian: “The selfie generation is becoming the self-expression generation as each of us seeks to explore and share our inner creativity through the one artistic tool to which we all have access—the smartphone.”

24. Why did the author mention Vincent van Gogh in the first paragraph?

A. To stress the topic of the text.

B. To provide background information.

C. To advise readers to take more selfies.

D. To persuade readers to create works of art.

A. They’re worth collecting.

B. They’re good for social changes.

C. They’re a means of expressing oneself.

D. They’re equal to self-poraits by the great masters.

26. What’s the main idea of the third paragraph?

A. The exhibitions on show.

B. The influence of selfies.

C. The importance of the exhibition.

D. The preparations for the exhibition.

27. Where can we probably find the text?

A. In a tour guide.

B. In an official report.

C. In an art book.

D. In a newspaper.

High-tech Annenberg PetSpace adoption center opened in Playa Vista. Over a dozen dogs and cats were adopted during Saturday’s opening of PetSpace, the brainchild of Wallis Annenberg, the CEO and president of the Annenberg Foundation. Besides helping adoptions, PetSpace will also include educational programming on how to care for pets and will produce scientific research focused on the human-animal bond.

Located on Bluff Creek Drive in Silicon Beach, the 30,000-square-foot facility(设施)houses more than 80 dogs, cats and rabbits. About 30 staff members and more than 100 volunteers work at PetSpace, which will be open Wednesday through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with free admission.

“We know that pets make us feel good,” said Wallis Annenberg, explaining that the facility will have a Sunday reading program where children can sit down with a book and an animals. “You’re petting a dog or a cat and reading to them. They’re captivated(着迷的) and so are you, and you just kind of find the joy in that.”

During Saturday’s opening, a large dog sat on the second floor and greeted families streaming into PetSapce. On the ground level, visitors read animal adoption stories displayed on screens. But the animals were the main attraction. Visitors played with cats and rabbits housed inside quiet rooms or watched dogs showcased(玻璃柜台) in their own private glass “suites” (套房). Interactive digital screens next to each suite carried personal information about the pets up for adoption and potential owners could request an appointment with adoption specialists to find the right match. Adoptions carry an $80 fee.

The facility partnered with organizations across the city to develop its programming. It’s working with the California Science Center to create a 9,000-square-foot exhibit on dogs that will open in2019. New research suggests the concern over negative effects from sharing a bed with a pet, or even kids, is a Western belief without substance (根据). Despite the concern, about half of all pet owners share their beds or bedrooms with their pets at night. Although this has been the case through the ages, remarkably few studies have been done about the benefits and defects of this practice.

In an article in the journal Human Nature, the authors argue that society regards both human-animal and adult-child co-sleeping with the same unnecessary panic. These concerns should, however, be set aside because both practices have their benefits, said lead author Dr. Bradley Smith of Central Queensland University in Australia. In their paper. Smith and his co-authors use dogs as an example of human-animal co-sleeping. They compare human-animal co-sleeping with adult-child co-sleeping and argue that both forms of co-sleeping have similar advantages and disadvantages.

According to the Australian researchers, current worry about human-animal co-sleeping and bed sharing between parents and their children focuses too much on possible negative aspects or consequences, such as poor health, impaired(受损的)functioning, and the development of problematic behavior.

“Apart from its clear reproductive function for the survival of the species, as well as physiological support for the quality and quantity of sleep that are important to individual health and well-being, co-sleeping fulfills basic psychological needs and strengthens social relations,” Smith said.

“Throughout history, humans have shared their sleeping spaces with other humans and other animals. We suggest that human-animal and adult-child co-sleeping should be approached as legal,” he said. Smith believes that more research should be done on human-animal co-sleeping practices. Moreover, a comprehensive(广泛的)understanding of human-animal co-sleeping has significant implications(暗示) for human sleep, human-animal relations, and animal welfare.”

32. What does the underlined word “defects” in Paragraph1probably mean?

A. Drawbacks.

B. Causes.

C. Consequences.

D. Influences.

33. What is Dr. Bradley Smith ‘s attitude to human-animal co-sleeping practices?

A. Doubtful.

B. Positive.

C. Ambiguous.

D. Disapproving.

34. Why does Smith suggest more research on human-animal co-sleeping practices?

A. To correct western belief.

B. To make adult-child co-sleeping legal.

C. To ensure the survival of the species.

D. To provide help for other researches.

35. What’s the best title of the text?

A. Different views about co-sleeping practices

B. Is it OK to share bed with pets or kids?
