Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance, by lying supinely on our backs, and hugging the delusive phantom of hope until our enemies shall have bound us hand and foot? Three millions of people, armed in the holy caused of liberty, and in such a country as that which we possess, are invincible by any force which our enemy can send against us. The battle is not to the strong alone it is to the vigilant, the active, the brave,. Sir, we have no selection. If we were base enough to desire it, it is now too late to retire from the contest. There is no retreat, but in submission and slavery! The war is inevitable ---and let it come! I repeat, sir, let it come! KEY

In some culture a significant aspect of spatial perception is shown by the amount of "personal space" people need between themselves and others to feel comfortable and not crowed. North Americans, for instance, seem to require about four feet of space between themselves and the people near them to feel comfortable. On the other hand, people from Arab countries and Latin America feel comfortable when they are close to each other. People from different cultures, therefore, may unconsciously infringe on each other's sense of space.

Thus just as different perception of time may create cultural conflicts, so too may different perceptions of space.

KEY

Voice message of the final 102 minutes at the World Trade Center have emerged. They began as calls for help, information, guidance. They quickly turned into soundings of desperation, and anger, and love. Now they are the remembered voices of the men and women who were trapped on the high floor of the twin towers.

Collected by reporters for The New York Times, these last word given human form to an all but invisible strand of this catastrophe: the advancing destruction across the top 19 floors of the north tower and the top 33 of the south, was most severe. Of the 2823 believed dead in the attack, at least 1,946,or 69 percent, were killed on those upper floors.

Rescue worker did not get near them. Photographers could not record their faces. Yet like messages in an electronic bottle from people marooned in some distant sky, their last words offer not only a broad and chilling view of the devastated zones, but the only window onto acts of bravery, decency and grace at a brutal time.
