In his new show, Evan Ruggiero plays guitar, sings pop standards and shows everybody his fine

footwork. What makes all of these especially unusual is that Ruggiero,24,has only one leg. When he was a 19-year-old musical theater student at New Jersey's Montclair State University,

Ruggiero had a rare bone cancer in his right leg. Finally his leg would have to be amputated (截)below

the knee.

Such a setback could have easily ended the career of a less tough person, but Ruggiero ,who has

been dancing since he was five, now puts the experience into his performance. His show, "The One-Legged Song and Dance Man: Volume 3",explains how he returned to dance just 18 months after

the amputation. His dance now relies on the use of a peg leg(假肢),he explains.

The secret to his surprising success, he says, was being a "stubborn" patient who refused to give up

on his dance and performing studies, despite the advice of his doctor.

"It was a real setback, but after it was all over, I said, 'You know what? I need to pick up right

where I left off and continue my career, "' Ruggiero said.

Ruggiero has come to view his peg leg as an instrument. "Tap dancers-they're always calling themselves musicians, and their feet are their instrument, " he said.

Noting that many audience members will never have seen a one-legged dancer before coming to his

show, Ruggiero says he won't shy away from the physical "weakness" his performance shows because of

his condition.

"A lot of people have come up to me, and they always say, 'You're such a role model and an

inspiration, ' "he said. "I'm honored when people say that, of course, but I'm just trying to get on with

my life."

21. What makes Ruggiero's new show unusual?

A. One-legged dance.

B. His own artworks.

C. The use of instrument.

D. Songs of pop standard.

22. According to the passage, it is true that

A. Ruggiero is a tough person with a strong will

B. the setback has ended Ruggiero's dance career

C. Ruggiero is dancing relying on others' support

D. his doctor agreed he kept on dancing and studying

23. When audience attend his performance, they may notice

A. Ruggiero plays piano, sings and dances

B. Ruggiero is a dancer with the help of a peg leg

C. there are many tap dancers in the performance

D. Ruggiero pretends to be a physically normal person

24. What's the author's attitude to Evan?

A. Worry

Four Must-See Route 66( 66号公路) Attractions

The United States is full of odd roadside attractions. Route 66 is home to some of the oldest and

most known attractions of them all. Here are four attractions you should see along the Mother

Road:

1. Paul Bunyan and a Hot Dog

Route 66 travelers pass by many fiberglass giants(巨人 ) right along the road. These giants were a

popular form of advertising in the 1960s. Many of them stood in front of service stations. They held car

parts, such as mufflers. The collection of Route 66 giants became known as "Muffler Men". Businesses

hoped the strange statues would get travelers' attention.

The first fiberglass giant was a "Paul Bunyan" figure, built in the early 1960s. It's said that Paul

Bunyan is a famous wood worker.

2. Crown Candy Kitchen and Jamaica Ray

Crown Candy Kitchen has been serving Route 66 travelers from the very beginning. It is just a few

short blocks from the 66 path through St. Louis, Missouri. The family-run soda fountain shop opened

more than 100 years ago, and has been making candies and meals ever since.

On weekends, people sometimes wait in line for a table at Crown Candy for over an hour. Luckily

there is free entertainment right outside. Jamaica Ray, a local folk artist, creates unusual sculptures.

3. The World's Largest Rocking Chair

Fanning, Missouri, is home to one of the strangest Route 66 attractions. Just off the road sits an

almost 13-meter-tall rocking chair.

The structure was completed in 2008 0n the first of April, or April Fool's Day. At one time the chair actually rocked. But officials decided it had to be still to be safe for ever.

People are not permitted to climb the chair. We think, however, that it probably happens once in a while

when no one is watching.

4. Big Texan's Steak Challenge

Few places better represent the common expression "Everything's Bigger in Texas" than the Big

Texan Steak Ranch. Since 1960,it has appealed to travelers with big appetites and a big love of beef.

It is hard to miss the huge yellow restaurant-or the giant cow statue that sits out front. The cow

advertises Big Texan's special deal, and what has made this steak ranch famous: a "free" 72-ounce(英两 )

or 2-kilogram steak. There is one trick: the steak is only free if you can eat the entire thing in one hour.

A special table is in the middle of the restaurant for the daring diners who accept the

challenge.

Since 1990,more than 9,000 diners have eaten the entire 2-kilogram steak.

25. What was considered as "Muffler Men"?

C. The World's Largest Rocking Chair.

D. Big Texan's Steak Challenge.

27. If you visit The World's Largest Rocking Chair, you have to

A. get there in April

B. climb up and rock it

C. see it 13 meters away

D. travel to Fanning, Missouri

28. What is Big Texan's Steak Challenge?

D. The daring diners sit around at a special table in the restaurant.

C

The following simple exercise routine works as well as prescription medication (药物治疗 ) without

the side effects.

A jog a day could keep your headaches at bay: Regular cardio workouts(有氧锻炼) may prevent migraines (偏头痛 ) , a growing body of research suggests.

Migraine patients had fewer headaches after doing 40-minute cycling workouts three times a week

for three months, according to a Swedish study.

The exercise routine worked just as well as one of the top migraine-preventing drugs-topamirate

but without the side effects of depression and tremors(刺激 ).

Cardio workouts can help with regular headaches, too, says Alexander Mauskop,M.D. ,director of

the New York Headache Center in Manhattan.

There are a couple of theories on how it works.

Breaking a sweat may relieve stress, says Dr. Mauskop. Headaches are often triggered by stress,

and if you remove the trigger, you release the pain.

The feel-good chemicals produced when you exercise actually block your pain sensors, acting as a

natural painkiller.

Since headaches can be caused by many different factors like genetics (遗传 ),lack of sleep, or

certain foods, cardio won't be the solution for everyone, Dr. Mauskop says. But one German study found

that it helped 65 percent of patients, which makes it as effective as the best medicines on the market.

Dr. Mauskop recommends his patients do a half-hour reasonable intensity (强度 )cardio,

like

jogging, biking, or swimming three times a week. These workouts are meant to be slow and steady, as

opposed to high-intensity intervals that alternate between all-out runs and rest.

Pushing yourself too much or increasing the intensity too quickly can trigger headaches in some

people, so make sure your heart rate doesn't jump above 150 BPM. If you don't have a heart rate

monitor, then breathe only through your nose. You 'Il know you're going too hard if you can't keep up

that breathing pattern.

Your migraines could start disappearing in a couple of weeks, Dr. Mauskop says.

29. According to the passage, the author may agree that

A. jogging, swimming and fishing are cardio workouts

B. neither cardio workouts nor topamirate has side effects

C. migraine patients may be cured by regular cardio workouts

D. cardio workouts will be the solution for everyone with migraines

30. The underlined word "triggered" in Paragraph 7 can be replaced by _

A. cured

B. released

C. caused

D. monitored

31. The feel-good chemicals produced can help with regular headaches because

A. it eases the stress

B. it breaks a sweat

C. it prevents migraines

D. it blocks your pain sensors

32. What would be the best title?

A. A cure for headache.

B. Side effects of migraine.

C. The causes of headache.

D. Advantages of cardio workouts.

D

Try rubbing (摩擦 ) the tip of your finger backwards and forwards very quickly on your coat or a

blanket. It should become hot. In cold weather we sometimes rub our hands together to make them

warm. The rubbing of two together which causes heat is called "friction"(摩擦力). In the same way,

people who lived in caves rubbed a piece of wood shaped like a pencil on another piece of wood with

dried leaves or grass packed nearby. The heat set the leaves or grass alight. This was a difficult way of

making fire. Better ways were found by using flint(火石),but it was not until 1827 that the first matches

were made in England.

Chemists made up a mixture and put it on an end of a stick or match. The mixture contained a

small amount of phosphorous (磷),a chemical that bursts into flame when heated slightly. The other

chemicals then caught fire and burned less fiercely until the wood was alight. By rubbing the

end of the

match, on sandpaper, the friction easily set the phosphorous alight. These first matches could also be

struck on other rough surfaces, including the leather sole(底)of a shoe.

At the time, everyone thought this was a wonderful invention. Unfortunately accidents happened. A

whole box of matches would suddenly catch fire if it was heated. Imagine this happening to someone

warming themselves by a fire with a box of matches in his or her pocket! Even loose matches in a

handbag or pocket could rub together and catch fire.

What was needed was a match that would only light if struck on a special surface. In 1852,the safety match was invented in Sweden. No phosphorous was used in the match head-it was put on the

outside of the matchbox instead. This made it impossible for the match to light unless it was rubbed

along the box on the special surface which contained sandpaper mixed with a little phosphorous.

33. Why did people use dried leaves or grass to pack another piece of wood?

A. The leaves or grass is easy to be alight.

B. The leaves or grass covered the wood well.

C. The leaves or grass help the air cause heat.

D. The leaves or grass acted as the role of match.

34. What did the chemists make the match of in 1827?

A. Leather sole, sandpaper and leaves.

B. Wood, leather sole and sandpaper.

C. Phosphorous, wood and sandpaper.

D. Phosphorous , sandpaper and flint.

35. If we used the safety match, we could see

A. loose matches could catch fire fiercely

B. phosphorous wasn't needed inside matchboxes

C. there were matches and sandpaper in matchboxes

D. the special surface containing sandpaper and phosphorous

书面表达(25分)

One possible version:

Dear David,

I’m writing to you to introduce a website whose service is about used goods exchange. The website is established by my good friend, who wants to help people make full use of items, unused for a certain length of time. My friend mentioned that what is currently needed most by some people is original English-written magazines or other reading materials. If you have some and no desire to preserve, would you like to exchange for something of a Chinese style. Additionally, it’s a good idea that you call on people around to join us.

I’m looking forward to your reply.

录音原文:

Text 1

M: I need to use the restroom, but the door is locked. No one is in there because I already knocked on the door. Can you give me the key?

W: Well, t he restroom is for customers only. You’ll need to buy something before I can give it to you.

Text 2

M: When does the play start? My ticket says 7:30 p.m.

W: Well, that’s when it officially starts. They actually check tickets fifteen minutes earlier.

And if you’re not seated when the lights go down five minutes before that, they won’t let you in.

Text 3

W: I play basketball three times a week. What’s your favorite sport, Patrick?

M: I played baseball as a young kid, but I haven’t picked up a bat in years. I’m much more into tennis these days.

Text 4

M: I wish Uncle Jim wouldn’t talk with his mouth fu ll of food.

W: Well, I love his jokes and that makes up for his lack of manners.

Text 5

W: How much did you pay for this new fridge?

M: Oh, it was a little over a thousand dollars, plus tax. It was much more expensive than our washing machine, but not nearly as much as our bed!

Text 6

W: I can’t believe Thanksgiving is right around the corner! Who usually does the cooking in your family?

M: My mother and my two aunts don’t let anyone else do anything except for the salad and the drinks. That includes all the sauces, desserts, and place settings.

W: Wow. It sounds like they take Turkey Day pretty seriously.

M: Listen, if Thanksgiving were an Olympic sport, they would be kicked out for winning too many gold medals! What about you?

W: Well, my parents and I do everything together. It’s better than one person trying to do too much.

Text 7

W: Oh, there is nothing better than a nice cold glass of ice water on a hot day.

M: You know, cold water always gives me stomachaches.

W: Really? I’ve never had that problem.I’ve been drinking ice water since I was little. M: Hmm. When I was a small boy, my grandmother never let my mom give me anything other than warm water.

W: Even in the summer?

M: Yes. Every once in a while, my dad would take me to get some ice cream, but my grandmother was never happy about that. I think it was the sugar that she didn’t like…

M: Is it me, or is it really hard to understand this speaker?

W: You’re right. It’s not that he has an accent like some of the other speakers from another country. It’s just that he is speaking too softly. Do you think it would be rude to ask him to turn his microphone up a little bit?

M: I don’t think he’s wearing one. Either that or he’s turned it off.

W: That’s crazy. There must be four hundred people here.

M: This part of the conference has turned into such a waste of time. Maybe we should leave and try to find another lecture.

W: I can’t do that. I come here specifically to hear this guy’s speech. I think I’ll just go up to him at the end of the speech and try to ask him some questions.

M: Good idea. Would you mind if I followed you up there? It might be the only way to get anything out of this hour.

W: No problem.

W: Excuse me. Can you tell me where I can find dresses for teenagers?

M: Yes, they’re on the left, next to the purses. But don’t you think you should look for something, uh…a bit more mature?

W: Oh, no…it’s not for me. I’m looking for a present for my niece. She’s turning 16 next week, and she’s having a big party.

M: Oh, I remember when m y daughter was that age. She’s about to graduate college now. W: How wonderful! Yeah, Elizabeth is looking at schools right now. We’ll probably take her on a tour of the East Coast colleges sometime in the fall. She lives with my brother and his wife in Oregon.

M: There are some schools there that offer good programs, but they probably don’t get the scenery like we do here on the East Coast. I’ve always liked seeing the seasons change.

I went to the University of Pennsylvania. What about you?

W: I went to Brown University.

M: Great! So where does your niece want to go to school?

W: Oh, I think Harvard, Yale, and the University of Chicago are her top three choices. M: Well, those are all fantastic schools with a long history, but I think it’s a good idea to take her to see all those places up close and in person. You can’t get a sense of a college until you set foot on campus.

W: I couldn’t agree more! Well, I’d better get back to my shopping!

Hello, I’m Rachel Joyce. I’m so happy to be here today at the Claremont Library. I’ve traveled all the way from England, and it’s truly wonderful to visit the United States! This is the first stop on my book tour. I’m off to Australia next! Before I take any questions, let me tell you a bit about myself. My new novel, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy, was recently published in 2014. The book is a companion to my first novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which follows a man named Harold Fry as he goes in search of his old friend, Queenie Hennessy, in hopes of saying goodbye before she dies. The novel was published in 2012. It was almost chosen for the Commonwealth Book Prize and the Man Booker Prize. The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy is Queenie’s side of the story as she waits for Harold. I’ve also written many radio plays for BBC Radio Four, and in 2007, I won the Tinniswood Award for my radio play To Be a Pilgrim. I have also won the UK National Book Award for New Writer of the Year. Before I was a writer, I was an actress in theatre and o n TV. I’ll take questions from the audience now.

Brain implant lets man with paralysis move and feel with his hand. A brain implant has restored movement and a sense of touch in the hand of a man with a severe spinal cord injury.Patrick Ganzer at Battelle Memorial Institute in the US and his colleagues have developed a brain-computer interface(BCI)that(21)______(allow)28-year-old Ian Burkhart to grasp and feel objects again. Burkhart has a severe upper spinal cord injury and has complete paralysis in his hands and legs,(22)______ can move his elbows and shoulders. He had a brain implant inserted in2014as part of research aiming to restore movement in(23)______right arm. The BCI uses the implant(24)______(record)brain activity that is sent to a processor that decodes these signals into movements, which in turn feed in to bands around the forearm which electrically activate his hand muscles. “We’ve made a lot of progress in the last six years:he can play[the video game]Guitar Hero, swipe a credit card and do about20different hand grips,”says Ganzer. But because Burkhart had no sensation in his hands,he previously had no sense of touch or pressure when(25) ______(grasp)objects,and if blindfolded, was not able to detect small objects such as a pencil. The researchers discovered that(26)______Burkhart’s hand cannot feel anything, the brain implant stills registers a faint sensory signal when he touches an object. They boosted this signal by incorporating a band around the bicep which vibrates when Burkhart’s hand receives sensory information. As a result,Burkhart is able to detect objects by touch alone. The BCI is also able to detect different levels of touch and adjust the strength of Burkhart’s hand movements depending on the object–a light grasp, for example, for a paper cup. The researchers believe it is the first BCI(27)______can simultaneously restore movement and touch. When the brain implant was inserted,it(28)______(intend)solely for controlling movement, but the(29)______(add) touch is possible because there is some overlap(30)______the sensory and motor areas in Burkhart’s brain, says Ganzer.
