When an big earthquake hit Wenchuan on May 12,many houses fell down. After the earthquake, all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.

One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper,a special picture touched(触动)me. It gave the clothing sizes of each family member. I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven-year-old twins,Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan. "We have so much, and these poor p eople now have nothing. We'll share what we have with them.”

I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this,I encouraged(鼓励) the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out his old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. "Oh,dear,”I said, “You don't have to give Lucy. You love her so much.” Megh an said,“Lucy makes me happy,Mommy. Maybe she'll make another little girl happy, too.”

In March last year, the car I was driving was involved (卷入) in a serious accident with another car on a country road. I soon found myself at the center of a crazy activity, in the middle of doctors, policemen and passers-by. A large can opener was used to get me out of my broken car and into an ambulance(救护车).

Over the next eight hours, I was taken to hospital, tested with X-ray and diagnosed (诊断) with a broken neck. Knowing that I’d been saved from death encouraged me throughout the long wait in the hospital and helped me deal with the countless visitors.

Only after I was sure that the last friend had left, could I direct my energies inwards. Flying in and out of my line of vision during my hospital stay was the Red Cross lady, a gentle presence in white who, from time to time, came in to offer cups of tea. After the visitors had gone, she came up to me and checked if I was all right.

I found myself telling her everything about the accident, my fears for my family as a result of my injuries (伤)—about my whole life. While I waited for an ambulance to take me to another hospital, she stood by my bed and held my hand as I off-loaded all the emotion I’d hidden from my family. She listened, quiet and patient.

Even now, the knowledge that I have the ways to get in touch with her provides me with great comfort. I look forward to a day in the near future when my angel (天使) and I can meet again, in happier situation.

Christmas is a time for shopping. But I think those of us who live in large ci ties in Asia would be cheating ourselves if we said this is the only time we are busy shopping. No, from Bangkok to Singapore, from Shanghai to Manila, shopping—especially shopping in large centers—is a year-round activity.

Shopping centers are good. They show Asia’s surprising economic (经济的) growth, and how far we have come in such a short time. For many of the older generation w ho can remember a time when everyone lived in villages and there was no running water, the air-conditioned centre means comfort, choice, luxury (豪华) and better times.

Nowadays, it seems our usual activities happen in the centre—it’s where we shop, eat, watch movies, meet our friends or just generally walk around.

Further more, we have come to regard shopping centers as important landmarks or tourist attractions(吸引). Whole generations of Asians are growing up to think that, besides home and school, the shopping center is the most natural place to be.

My idea about shopping centers is not that they are often big buildings that look quite different from other parts in a city, or that they promote (促进) shopping at a time when our planet can hardly afford it. My main idea about centers is tha t they don’t really seem to make us happy. The large advertisements outside the stores could make us think that if

we only had this pair of jeans, or if we hung out at this café drinking coffee, then we could feel more successful. But once we buy something, we only want to buy something more—as everyone already knows.

Shopping centers, even though they try to look as welcoming as possibl e, can be unkind places. To make us buy, they must make us feel that we are short of something, or that everyone else has something we do not yet own. We must want to surpass others or at the very least to keep up. How can this thought always trying to be cool bring us true joy?

The saddest thing is that the modern centre has stopped us from many beautiful, necessary and important activities. We have no one to blame (责怪) but ourselves. Instead of shopping, we could be cooking, visiting a nearby waterfall, going to the beach, reading a novel, taking a long walk, playing a sport, learning a dance or visiting each other’s homes.

Every time we have a spare piece of land, all we can think of b uilding on it is yet another centre. Perhaps instead, we should be building libraries, theatres, museums, sports halls, public swimming pools, parks—the list is endless. We might even consider leaving t hat land alone. This is something that the centre may have caused us to forget—in order to be happy, we must create as well as consume (消费).

9. What is the writer’s attitude towards shopping centers?

A. He likes them very much.

B. He doesn’t like them at all.

C. He likes them only a little.

D. He doesn’t like all of them.

10. Why do more and more shopping centers appear in some Asian countries?

A. Because economy in the world develops very fast.

B. Because shopping centers have attracted tourists all over the world.

C. Because people go shopping in large shopping centers all year round.

D. Because shopping centers have become an important part in everyone’s life.

11. What is the greatest disadvantage of shopping centers, according to the writer?

A. They don’t seem to make us happy.

B. They lead us to buy more and more things.

C. They force us to give up many other activities.

D. They have us fall into endless competition with others.

12. Which of the following is not true?

A. It is very easy for us to find a shopping centre in a big city.

B. There are usually all kinds of services in a shopping center.

C. The government must be responsible for the writer’s sadness.

D. Besides shopping, there’re many other activities we can enjoy.

Stephen Hawking, arguably the most famous scientist alive today, cannot write on paper and cannot even hold a pen. His disabilities, however, have not affected his mind. Hawking is able to grasp some of the most complex concepts known to man and somehow simplify them for others.

Hawking was born in Oxford, England on January 8, 1942. When he was about 8 years old, his family moved to the town of St Albans, about 20 miles to the north of London, where he attended St Albans school at the age of eleven. Haw king then attended his father’s old college, University College. Stephen wanted to do mathematics, which was not available at University College, so he did physics instead. He earned a degree in Natural Science with first class honours in just three years. Hawking then headed to Cambridge to study Cosmology. He completed his PhD and then stayed on at Cambridge at first a Research Fellow and then a Professor Fellow. In 1973, Hawking moved from the Institute of Astronomy to the department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. In 1979, he was given the post of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, which he continues to hold to this day. He is today a fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the US national Academy of Sciences.

Hawking’s great interest has been to understand the basic laws that our universe follows. One of his most well-known achievements was to demonstrate, along with Roger Penrose, that Einstein’s theory of general relativity needed to be brought together with quantum theory. Hawking and Penrose showed that if Einstein’s theory was carried out logically, space and time must have begun in something like the “Big Bang” of evolutionary theory and must end in black holes.

Hawking has received numerous medals, awards and other prizes for his work. He is known today not only among professional scientists but also by the general public. He has published several books specially written to try to explain his theories to the common man. Three of his most popular books are his bestsellers A Brief History of Time, Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays and most recently in 2001, The Universe in a Nutshell. Hawking continues to research and write, not letting his disabilities slow him down. His goal is simple, he says. He simply wants “a com plete understanding of the universe. Why it is as it is and why it exists at all.”

英语必修三Unit4Astronomy课文翻译

英语必修三Unit 4 Astronomy课文翻译 作者:未知来源:尚学苑2014-09-20 LIF HOW E BEGAN ON THE EARTH No one knows exactly how the earth began, as it happened so long ago. However, according to a widely accepted theory, the universe began with a "Big Bang" that threw matter in all directions. After that, atoms began to form and combine to create stars and other bodies. For several billion years after the "Big Bang", the earth was still just a cloud of dust. What it was to become was uncertain until between 4.5 and 3.8 billion years ago when the dust settled into a solid globe. The earth became so violent that it was not clear whether the shape would last or not. It exploded loudly with fire and rock. They were in time to produce carbon, nitrogen, water vapour and other gases, which were to make the earths atmosphere. What is even more important is that as the earth cooled down, water began to appear on its surface. Water had also appeared on other planets like Mars but, unlike the earth, it had disappeared later. It was not immediately obvious that water was to be fundamental to the development of life. What many scientists believe is that the continued presence of water allowed the earth to dissolve harmful gases and acids into the oceans and seas. This produced a chain reaction, which made it possible for life to develop. Many millions of years later, the first extremely small plants began to appear on the surface of the water. They multiplied and filled the oceans and seas with oxygen, which encouraged the later development of early shellfish and all sorts of fish. Next, green plants began to grow on land. They were followed in time by land animals. Some were insects. Others, called amphibians, were able to live on land as well as in the water. Later when the plants grew into forests, reptiles appeared for the first time. They produced young enerally by laying eggs. After that, some huge animals, called dinosaurs, developed. They laid eggs too and existed on the earth for more than 140 million years. However, 65 million years ago the age of the dinosaurs ended. Why they suddenly disappeared still remains a mystery. This disappearance made possible the rise of mammals on the earth. These animals were different from all life forms in the past, because they gave birth to young baby animals and produced milk to feed them. Finally about 2.6 million years ago some small clever animals, now with hands and feet, appeared and spread all over the earth. Thus they have, in their turn, become the most important animals on the planet. But they are not looking after the earth very well. They are putting too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which prevents heat from escaping from the earth into space. As a result of this, many scientists believe the earth may become too hot to live on. So whether life will continue on the earth for millions of years to come will depend on whether this problem can be solved.
