Section C

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some q uestions or unfinished statements. For each o f them there are four choices marked A ), B., C.andD.. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding lett er on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line thr ough the centre.

Passage One

Questions 56 to 60 are based on the foll owing passage.

Educators today are more and more oft en heard to say that computer literacy is ab solutely necessary for college students. Many even argue that each incoming freshman sh ould have permanent access to his or hcr o wn microcomputer. What advantages do com puters offer the college students?

Any student who has used a word proce

ssor will know one compelling reason to use a computer: to write papers. Although not all students feel comfortable composing on a word processor, most find revising and editi ng much easier on it. One can alter, insert, or delete just by pressing a few keys, thus e liminating the need to rewrite or re-type. Fu rthermore, since the revision process is less burdensome, students are more likely to revi se as often as is necessary to end up with t he best paper possible. For these reasons, m any freshman English courses require the us e of a word processor.

Computers are also useful in the context of language courses, where they are used to drill students in basic skills. Software progr ams reinforce ESL(English as a Second Lang uage ) instruction, as well as instruction in French, German, Spanish, and other languag es. By using these programs on a regular ba sis, students can improve their proficiency in a language while proceeding at their own p

ace.

Science students take advantage of comp uters in many ways. Using computer graphic capabilities, for example, botany students ca n represent and analyze different plant grow th patterns. Medical students can learn to in terpret computerized images of internal body structures. Physics students can complete co mplex calculations far

more quickly than they could without the us e of computer.

Similarly, business and accounting stude nts find that computer spreadsheet programs are all but indispensable to many aspects o f their work, while students pursuing careers in graphic arts. marketing, and public relat ions find that knowledge of computer graphi c is important. Education majors learn to de velop grading systems using computers, while social science students use computers for an alyzing and graphically displacing their resea rch results.

It is no wonder, then, that educators su pport the purchase and use of microcompute rs by students. A versatile tool, the compute r can help students learn. And that is, after all, the reason for going to college.

60.A

定位:根据题干信息the reason for students t o go to college可将答案定位到文章最后一段。

A。Passage Two Questions 61 to 65 are based on the foll owing passage.

Language is, and should be, a living thi ng, constantly enriched with new words and forms of expression. But there is a vital dis tinction between good developments, which a dd to the language, enabling us to say thing s we could not say before, and bad develop ments, which subtract from the language by rendering it less precise. A vivacious, colorfu l use of words is not to be confused with m ere slovenliness. The kind of slovenliness in which some professionals deliberately indulge is perhaps akin to the cult (迷信) of the un finished work, which has eroded most of the arts in our time. And the true answer to it is the same that art is enhanced, not hinde red, by discipline. You cannot carve satisfact orily in butter.

The corruption of written English has b een accompanied by an even sharper decline

in the standard of spoken English. We spea k very much less well than was common am ong educated Englishmen a generation or tw o ago.

The modem theatre has played a banefu l (有害的) part in dimming our appreciation of language. Instead of the immensely artic ulate dialogue of, for example, Shaw (who w as also very insistent on good pronunciation), audiences are now subjected to streams of b arely literate trivia, often designed, only too well, to exhibit 'lack of communication', and larded (夹杂) with the obscenities (下流的话) and grammatical errors of the intellectually impoverished. Emily Post once advised her readers: "The theatre is the best possible pl ace to hear correctly-enunciated speech. " Al as, no more. One young actress was recently reported to be taking lessons in how to spe ak badly, so that she should fit in better.

But the BBC is the worst traitor. After years of very successfully helping to raise th

e general standard o

f spoken English, it sud denly went into reverse. As the head of the Pronunciation Unit coyly (含蓄地) put it, "In the 1960s the BBC opened the field to a m uch wider range of speakers." To hear a BB C disc jockey talkin

g to the latest ape-like p op idol is a truly shocking experience of ver bal squalor. And the prospect seems to be o f even worse to come. School teachers are a ctively encouraged to ignore little Johnny's i ncoherent grammar, atrocious spelling and

h aphazard punctuation, because worrying abo ut such things might inhibit his creative gen

i us.

61. The writer relates linguistic slovenliness t o tendencies in the arts today in that they b oth __________.

A.occasionally aim at a certain fluidity B.appear to shun perfection

C.from time to time show regard for the f inishing touch

D.make use of economical short cuts

62. "Art is enhanced, not hindered, by disci pline" (Lines 6~7, Paragraph 1 ) means __ ________.

A.an artist's work will be finer if he obse rves certain aesthetic standards

B.an unfinished work is bound to be comp aratively inferior

C.the skill of certain artists conceals their slovenliness

D.artistic expression is inhibited by too ma ny roles

63. Many modem plays, the author finds, fre quently contain speech which__________. A.is incoherent and linguistically objectiona ble

B.is far too ungrammatical for most peopl e to follow

C.unintentionally shocks the audience D.tries to hide the author's intellectual ina dequacies

64. The author says that the standard of the spoken English of BBC__________.

A.is the worst among all broadcasting net works

B.has raised English-speaking up to a new level

C.has taken a turn for the worse since the 1960s

D.is terrible because of a few popular disc jockeys

65. Teachers are likely to overlook the lingui stic lapses in their pupils since__________. A.they find that children no longer respon d to this kind of discipline nowadays B.they fear the children may become less coherent

C.more importance is now attached to oral expression

D.the children may be discouraged from e xpressing their ideas

Passage Two

And the true a nswer to it is the same that art is enhance d,not hindered, bydiscipline. 故选A。

63.A

65.D

定位:根据题干信息teachers和linguistic lapse s in their pupils可将答案定位到文章最后一句。

Passage One Questions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. In this age of Internet chat, videogames and reality television, there is no shortage of mindless activities to keep a child occupied. Yet, despite the competition, my 8-year-old daughter Rebecca wants to spend her leisure time writing short stories. She wants to enter one of her stories into a writing contest, a competition she won last year. As a writer I know about winning contests, and about losing them. I know what it is like to work hard on a story only to receive a rejection slip from the publisher. I also know the pressure of trying to live up to a reputation created by previous victories. What if she doesn’t win the contest again? That’s the strange thing about being a parent. So many of our own past scars and dashed hopes can surface. A revelation (启示) came last week when I asked her, “Don’t you want to win again?”“No,”she replied, “I just want to tell the story of an angel going to first grade.” I had just spent weeks correcting her stories as she spontaneously (自发地) told them. Telling myself that I was merely an experienced writer guiding the young writer across the hall, I offered suggestions for characters, conflicts and endings for her tales. The story about a fearful angel starting first grade was quickly “guided”by me into the tale of a little girl with a wild imagination taking her first music lesson. I had turned her contest into my contest without even realizing it. Staying back and giving kids space to grow is not as easy as it looks. Because I know very little about farm animals who use tools or angels who go to first grade, I had to accept the fact that I was co-opting (借用) my daughter’s experience. While stepping back was difficult for me, it was certainly a good first step that I will quickly follow with more steps, putting myself far enough a way to give her room but close enough to help if asked. All the while I will be reminding myself that children need room to experiment, grow and find their own voices. 57. What do we learn from the first paragraph? A) A lot of distractions compete for children’s time nowadays. B) Children do find lots of fun in many mindless activities. C) Rebecca is much too occupied to enjoy her leisure time. D) Rebecca draws on a lot of online materials for her writing. 58. What did the author say about her own writing experience? A) She was constantly under pressure of writing more. B) Most of her stories had been rejected by publishers. C) She did not quite live up to her reputation as a writer. D) Her way to success was full of pains and frustrations.

Six Secrets of High-Energy People的分析思路:secrets:多数人不知道,一定新颖有趣;high-energy people 只能是指精力充沛的人,不可能是X战警。

Sub 1:How Much Trash Is Generated? Sub 2:How Is Trash Disposed of? Sub 3:What Is a Landfill? Sub 6:What happens to Trash in a Landfill? Sub 7:How Is a Landfill Operated?

Trees should only be pruned when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and , fortunately, the number of such reasons is small. Pruning involves the cutting away of obergrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way. First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut diseaed or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air. One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but itis a wound that will heal. Often there is a race between the healing and the desease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce which has been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hurs and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose. Pruning is usually without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts yu make will bleed. If this does happen,it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly. 1.Pruning should be done to ______. a.make the tree grow taller

Passage1 Reading leadership literature, you’d sometimes think that everyone has the potential to be an effective leader. I don’t believe that to be true. In fact, I see way fewer truly effective leaders than I see people stuck in positions of leadership who arc sadly incompetent and seriously misguided about their own abilities. Part of the reason this happens is a lack of honest self-assessment by those who aspire to(追求)leadership in the first place. We've all met the type of individual who simply must take charge. Whether it's a decision-making session, a basketball game, or a family outing, they can't help grabbing the lead dog position and clinging on to it for dear life. They believe they're natural born leaders. Truth is, they're nothing of the sort. True leaders don't assume that it's their divine(神圣的)right to take charge every time two or more people get together. Quite the opposite. A great leader will assess each situation on its merits, and will only take charge when their position, the situation, and/or the needs of the moment demand it. Many business executives confuse leadership with action. What is Integrity? "Integrity" is defined as "adherence to moral and ethical principles; honesty."The key to integrity is consistency--not only setting high personal standards for oneself (honesty, r esponsibility, respect for others, fairness) but also living up to those standards each day. One who has integrity is bound by and follows moral and ethical standards even when m aking life's hard choices, choices which may be clouded by stress, pressure to succeed, or temptation. What happens if we lie, cheat, steal, or violate other ethical standards? We feel disap pointed in ourselves and ashamed. But a lapse of integrity also affects our relationships w ith others. Trust is essential in any important relationship, whether personal or professional. Who can trust someone who is dishonest or unfair? Thus, integrity must be one of our most important goals. Risky Business We are each responsible for our own decisions, even if the decision-making process has been undermined by stress or peer pressure. The real test of character is whether we can learn from our mistake, by understanding why we acted as we did, and then explorin g ways to avoid similar problems in the future. Making ethical decisions is a critical part of avoiding future problems. We must learn to recognize risks, because if we can't see the risks we're taking, we can't make responsi ble choices. To identify risks, we need to know the rules and be aware of the facts. For example, one who doesn't know the rules about plagiarism may accidentally use words or ideas without giving proper credit, or one who fails to keep careful research notes may

Small Schools Rising This years list of the top 100 high schools shows that today, those with fewer students are flourishing. Fifty years ago, they were the latest thing in educational reform: big, modern, suburban high schools with students counted in the thousands. As baby boomers(二战后婴儿潮时期出生的人) came of high-school age, big schools promised economic efficiency. A greater choice of courses, and, of course, better football teams. Only years later did we understand the trade-offs this involved: the creation of excessive bureaucracies(官僚机构),the difficulty of forging personal connections between teachers and students.SAT scores began dropping in 1963;today,on average,30% of students do not complete high school in four years, a figure that rises to 50% in poor urban neighborhoods. While the emphasis on teaching to higher, test-driven standards as set in No Child Left Behind resulted in significantly better performance in elementary(and some middle)schools, high schools for a variety of reasons seemed to have made little progress. Size isnt everything, but it does matter, and the past decade has seen a noticeable countertrend toward smaller schools. This has been due ,in part ,to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has
